- written & produced by Joni Mitchell | from the album Ladies of the Canyon (1970) | live in-studio from the CBC program The Way It Is (1968) | thanks to Randall & the JMDL Tape Tree | lyrics:
Yesterday a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star
Then the child moved ten times round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like, "when you're older" must appease him
And promises of someday make his dreams
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return, we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game
Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town
And they tell him, "take your time, it won't be long now
Til you drag your feet to slow the circles down."
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return, we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game
So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true
There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams, and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return, we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

I first heard this song when I was age 13, I am now age 67; thank you Joni for writing what I lived.
And tearful 😢. @#RoundAndRound @ #CaroselOfTime
I’m 67 and first heard when I was 17 shorty after I discovered Court and spark. I was hooked and needed more!
This song is definitely one if not the purest gem in the history of Music. Absolutely phenomenal.
You kind of want this beautiful song to go on and on forever. Never end.
My life would not be complete without Joni.
We used to sing this at Girl Scout Camp back in the mid 1980s around the campfire. This totally takes me back to that time. Back when the days were simple and fun.
Yah those were the days, camper in the Catskills 75-85. It really was so simple then.
how wonderful to hear that the camp leader was so foward thinking to have you kids listen to music that brings back memories of fun days .. May we both keep sharing this music with the younger generation bc her music is so very healing .. May her music now and then help our earth heal itself... °••\\ ○♡□■□▪︎▪︎ ♤□£{○•~•\£ € ¥ ₩¿▪︎
Barbra Streisand, the way we were
For me it was the mid 1970s at boys' summer camp. Imagine 60 10-11 year-old boys singing this around a fire. Magical.
Joni Mitchell is so graceful and one of the best singer/ songwriter voice and very deep philosophical meaning to her songs, especially the “ The Circle Game”, and her voice is so down- to -earth and elegant that it comes somewhat close to Julie Andrew’s!
Just an absolutely perfect song
Makes me cry. Life is short. Enjoy it.
Beautiful, heard this when I was 7. Fell in love with her and her music. Joni feeds my soul.
💔❤ This song can mend a broken heart😔
Love her word choices and imagery as well as her voice. No one has the character to write lyrics like that. Perhaps it's her life in a relatively small town that gives her a clean perspective. Every one of her albums is enigmatic. Blue is a great album, The Hissing of Summer Lawns so perfect for the era it was written in....Ladies of the Canyon defines an era.
The Wonder years, my children are grown adults but I miss that I am not needed anymore. They are grown starting families of their own and I am thrilled.
Great.. She's a legend for songs like that
Found the song! Thanks, SNL! 😊👍
What an Angel!
Love these lyrics!
She and the song have sustained me longer than I could have expected when I first heard it on "Miles of Aisles". XXOO
She wrote this about Neil Young, fellow Canadian,
as a response to his "sugar mountain."
Was at work and heard this while on hold
Simply wonderful!
Beautiful voice, sweet lyrics...
wow just wow ..this just never gets old xoxoxoxoxoxo
Beautiful voice, beautiful song.
An elegant song for a more civilized age.
i love it eternally!
"cartwheels turn to car wheels ".....I'm speechless.....delightful
I remember learning this song at school.
The words come flooding back ...
A performance for the ages.
This is a gem! Thanks sonicboy!
Thank you
I’m waiting for the day that I learn that Joni is no more...I think I will cry like a child. She has always been a place to go my entire life to find true beauty and calm.
Fabulous footage, it's interesting to see her place her hand over the top of her guitar instead of barring the way she does now. It's something you need to build up to. Thank you for sharing.
I noticed that. Seems a little bit gimmicky? And the kapo, all folk guitarists used one back then. It was like virtue signalling. Even Tracy Chapman said, many years later, "I had a guitar and a kapo."
I thinkthe reason for her hand coming down over top was i think partly because of her fighting polio a few years earlier!
i love this song so much.
Beautiful! Love that song!
She must've had trouble barring it and keeping the higher strings ringing
Beautiful, articulate and poetic. The audience seem medicated...
What medication are you on?
Just beer, Lewis! And you?!
lol I noticed that too, Peter. I think the fact that this was a Kinescope capture, and a rather poorly preserved one at that, creates some visual illusions, possibly making the audience look a little more frozen than they might have actually been. I had to laugh though at the two kids who are looking back at some commotion that must have been happening behind the set just as she's singing "we can only look behind from where we came."
And round and round
This Is Us brought me here. A tribute to Rebecca
Same here
NICE
