    I often believe that the years 1993, 1994 and 1995 were the best years of Gary Ablett Senior and even 1992 and 1989 as honorable mentions.
    Kinda wished that these season highlights that were on VHS back in the day would be collected into a DVD or Blue Ray collection as they are just so amazing to look back to.

      I would agree mostly, but I reckon 89. Norm Smith in a losing GF ranks high for me. 89 was the best GF of all time.... oh wait, 2009 is up there, with another Gary Ablett.
      Sure, Gaz won the Coleman and kicked 100 in the years you mention, so maybe you're right, but 89 is my pick.
      Agree re the DVD/BlueRay thing. 7 must have footage.

    Didn't watch AFL back then growing up in Sydney. But with the exception of probably Buddy, there aren't many players now that genuinely get you excited to watch a game to see the freakish things they can do. I imagine this must have been a big part of Ablett's appeal in his prime

    • @greebo7857
      @greebo7857 Před 4 lety

      Growing up in Sydney surely you saw Lockett? But sure, Buddy is exciting, but he can't beat great defenders. Tom Lonergan ( Geelong ) beat him nearly every time. Gaz played against Dustin Fletcher, Steve Silvagni, Mick Martin, and Chris Langford and beat them all. Those guys were the Rolls Royce of defenders. Oh, and Glen Jakovich. If Gaz was on then look out.
      I reckon he could have beaten Alex Rance, Richmond's current superstar defender. He would have beaten Bruce Doull. He'd beat Mark Bliksavs, Tom Stewart and Harry Taylor from the current, awesome, Cats defence. But the game moves on, and nobody kicks to pack marks anymore.

      Ablett's most skilful freakish goal ever imo under immense pressure & to kick it over his head like that in a millisecond the way he put it on his boot knew exactly what he was doing (no luck needed).

    I'll never forget the look on Mick Martin's face when Leigh Tudor kicked it over his head and he turned to see Gaz mark it, 5 metres out with seconds to go with scores level in the 94 prelim. Ablett was his man, and he'd just lost the Kangas a GF place.
    History shows that Geelong got touched up in the GF, mostly by Matera, but I don't reckon NM would have done better. The Eagles were awesome that year.

      The Matera GF was in 92. Kemp was the one they let run free in 94. We had a number out injured or were injured during the game (Buddha Hocking, notably), but you’re right that West Coast were too good that year.

      16 goals to 4 after quarter time...and North had such a reliance on Carey and Jakovich was his main weakness, North may have lost by more than the Cats...they had the one of the best defences ever during that time. Gaz looked completely out of sorts in that GF

    Was he a left footer or a right footer? Whatever, he was a super talent.

    • @greebo7857
      @greebo7857 Před 4 lety

      He could kick equally on both, which wasn't common back then. These days you won't get a game unless you can use both, and players practice, but Gaz was an absolute natural on both. Shit, he was an absolute natural full stop. And he avoided training whenever he could. The best ever.

      @@greebo7857 hardly any players can kick both feet today! The only player i no kicked both feet equally was sam Mitchell for hawthorn! Yes they can throw the odd kick on their opposite foot but its no were near as strong as the good foot! Its always been a rare attribute! Thats why you have flankers! If your a right footer you play right flank and same for left! Both wings same! The first thing you should no on any opponant is which foot he uses and force them to use their opposite foot! To say you cant get a game today if you cant kick both feet is ridiculous! Only 5percent of players today can truely kick both feet! If that!!

Snr's greatest strengths were not his kicking or marking it was his speed and strength and height ! When you add both feet kicking and elite marking to strength and speed and height then you get gary ablett snr! Complete footballer ! Mathews didn't have height or speed! Cary didn't have speed! Aka didn't have height or strength the list goes on and on! Gazza snr was the complete footballer and probably the only one!
