IMHO, the meaning is related with the Mercadante's target of his music, probably more focused on business than on innovation. Business were business in 19th Century as well... It could be that Mercadante was not really concerned at all about if his music would perdured over the years after his death...
This concerto is underated and surely belongs in the standard repertoire with the great ones. Such marvellous piece
