To commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the Haitian Revolution, a competition was held for a national anthem in 1903. The poetic words of Justin Lhérisson and martial composition of Nicolas Geffrard won over the judges, which led to its official adoption as national anthem in 1904.[5]
There is a Haitian Creole version that was created by Raymond A. Moise. Ansy Dérose, a Haitian singer, helped popularize it. Although it became widely accepted, the 1987 Haitian Constitution makes no mention of this particular version.
La Dessalinienne was named in honor of Haiti's revolutionary leader and first ruler Jean-Jacques Dessalines.

Justin Lhérisson (1873-1907), avocat, journaliste et lodyanseur, en a écrit les paroles à l'occasion du centenaire de l'indépendance haïtienne, sur une musique de Nicolas Geffrard.

During the Haitian Revolution, Napoleon sent a legion of Polish soldiers to fight for the French Empire. When the Poles learned that they were sent there to force back into slavery a people who just wanted their freedom, they remembered how their people was being oppressed in a similar way by Russia/Prussia/Austria, and switched to the Haitian side. Later, they became the only Europeans allowed to own land in Haiti by the new government.

Haiti was the first country that recognized my nation's independence (Greece) and despite its financial issues,they supported our revolution by sending a ship with cocoa (to sell and thus get money for weapons) and volunteers.Unfortunately,their ship was destroyed by the French navy while sailing in the Mediterranean sea.We shall never forget their braveness,God bless Haiti!
