Dance Monkey is about being made to perform again. The song contains phrases that was said to her from passersby when she was basking. It would the end of a long day performing and people would try to make her sing again. That's why the song contains "and when you're done, I'll make you do it all again." BTW, that is her as the main old man in the video.
Yes, and in an interview, Toni Watson (Tones and I) said that you replace the word "dance" with "sing" and it tells her story of busking on the street, how people would interrupt her while busking, even stealing her tips/donations, she wrote this song as a frustration of that happening to her..... well now look at where it took her
You need to listen to her sing live. She sounds exactly the same. It’s insane! I assumed there was lots of post production in the release, but there really wasn’t!

This somehow is the longest running number one song in Australian chart history (total of 24 weeks, with 21 of those weeks being consecutive). Look, I don’t dislike the song, but after hearing it everywhere and for so long after its release I wouldn’t be disappointed if I never heard it again. It is incredibly catchy though.
@Luna Raven the passing of time does help somewhat... it’s like the Gotye and Kimbra song - I loved that for ages, then couldn’t listen to it for an even longer period when it got overplayed, now I can listen to it again without wanting to throw my radio or phone out of the window 😄

When this first come out i used to listen to it every morning on the radio in the car on the way to work as it was played every fifth song for the first two months after release, the first time i seen the video i was blown away because i was sure it was a young black lady singing it. Toni really is a down-to-earth performer. What you hear and who you see, is what you get. Unique. Def different, and not over-produced. Her performing live is an authentic experience, and also well-worth checking out. She gave a fantastic US TV debut of this song on Jimmy Fallon's show. Expat Kiwi in CA, giving this gal from Oz full props!.
Saw her in concert in Sydney 🇦🇺 this week, she was amazing - so much love and respect for her. She gave BLM a shout out and the theatre went wild with support. ❤️ Thank you for covering her - she has an amazing voice. What a talent!

This is my first time hearing this along with you. I listen mostly to 60's, 70's and 80's, so when you play some of the newer stuff, I will usually give it a try and not really like it. Not with this song, what a great voice and fun song! I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks, LOL!!

As Tones explains: “One person ran past and stole my money. Someone else lent over and tried to play my keyboard. The whole crowd was drunk and rowdy. I said ‘Sorry this is it now.’ They started booing me. I was so frustrated. It showed me how people didn’t have any patience anymore. Replace the word ‘dance’ with ‘sing’, and that sums it up.”"
