- Hi, here we go again, another water damaged Nintendo Switch purchased from eBay :-)
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince. - Jak na to + styl
Vince: 33:57 "Okay, lets swap the battery over, it could be as simple as that"
Me: *Sees an hour left of the video* "Yeah... don't think so pal..."
Just breaks my heart when that happens. Poor wee vince
not even an hour
That would've been my first guess, the corrosion acts as a resistive element and this alone could explain the irregular power consumption... 9 out of 10 times when i see a battery compartment filled with corroded crap, that is going to turn out to be the cause of my problem.
@@TalkingEthan Thank you for clarifying for him, haha
Well obviously he didn’t know. Literally anything could have happened to the system and he didn’t know what could have caused it to not work besides troubleshooting
I swear these videos are therapy to me. I have panic disorder and when I load these up. the soothing voice and the calmness in the nature of these vids is just help ground me a little. I am so happy I found this channel. Don't worry about the length of the vids,Vince. Take the time you need to fix something that you are willing to try doing. Thanks again and good job fixing this switch!

Lol i felt the joy when the Nintendo writing first came up 😁👍
I've come to the conclusion that Switch owners enjoy taking it to the toilet and effectively dropping the console into it. This seems to happen quite frequently...
Great video!!! ♥

Was on a flight earlier last week. A child walked in to the loo of the aircraft whilst playing on his Switch. He came out of the loo after 45 minutes. But that's only because his mother bashed on the loo door to remind him to get out. I couldn't help but giggle a little

the educational value of watching your fail fail, and then finally succeed after learning a huge amount about the switch cannot be overstated. I've leaned so much from watching you.
This was seriously awesome to watch. So much was broken with this switch, but you tackled all the problems one at a time. A lot of work went into this, but definitely worth it.
This was a fantastically relaxing and informative video to watch! Love that you took your time and meticulously went through every possible fix, slowly notching up the difficulty with each successive 'what-if-it's-this' scenario. It was great that you had the other known-good Switch on-hand so that you could test everything from the damaged one to be absolutely certain what worked and what didn't. That's the kind of fastidiousness that I appreciate! You've got yourself a new subscriber, Vince! I'll be on the lookout now for a broken Switch in my area. Might be worth giving it a shot. Will start binge-watching your older vids and I look forward to what's next! Take care!
My Mate Vince, the Nintendo Switch resurrector! I really enjoyed watching that. Great job!
No longer the Switch killer👍👍👍
SPOILER :D
You ruined it now ffs
Did you just fucking spoil it?
Did y'all expect no spoilers in the comments? LMAO
i dont understand why people read comments while watching the video and not expect "spoilers" lol
Love watching you fix these things, good job with the switch, unfortunate about the joycons, but spare parts will come in handy. Keep up the great work! Can't wait to see you hit milestones and be able to say I was here from the start!
Watched the whole video, was intrigued and left with some hope mine maybe salvageable as my son dropped mine in the dogs water bowl over a year ago.
Well done fella, you have brilliant patience I'd have given up well before 30 minutes of starting.
It's been two years - did you fix it?
Nope ... Still waiting for someone else to guarantee they can fix it lol
@@nathanvanner1981 Send it to Vince or TronicsFix or Northridge Fix or the many other channels that do repairs.
@@nathanvanner1981 shortcut: there will never be a guarantee. in fact, with repair-work in general, guarantees mean nothing due to use, piecemeal wear and tear, and unknowable variables. some things are beyond repair, many things are beyond *cost-effective* repair, and some things that appear to have been resurrected will simply fail again. repair is always a best-guess, good-faith attempt to prolong life in the knowledge that that life will be finite regardless. a technician will charge for his time and knowledge in attempting to repair, even if that switch fails again within a month due to corrosion having invisibly eaten away traces in between any of *seven* PCB layers.

Why I find this so riveting is beyond me. These videos are done so well; doing things to our beloved toys 99.9% of us wish we were smart enough to try. Fantastic bruv. Cheers!
Tried my best to look through so i didn't recomment it but for the thermal paste it's good to clean off the old and put on new mainly because it has already been spread out and when you place the cooler or shield back down there is bare spots/air pockets that reduces the effectiveness and plus usually what the manufacturer puts on there isn't that good. Also for the switch no don't need more then a pea size dot if even that. Hope this helps you understand better, Great video as always!
Really pleased for ya mate, was going through all them emotions with ya. Keep up the good work
Love your vids. I've fixed loads of electronics, but never tried to fix gaming stuff. After watching you, I replaced a faulty joycon thumb stick and a broken bumper on an Xbox one elite controller...So thanks!! 😁

Wow it seems i've been following you since first watching a video about hdmi matrix. Now i am interested in repairing stuff my self voila you are already making videos about it. Bravo!
I have no particular interest in fixing a Nintendo Switch, but I found this video fascinating and very informative. Great work, and congrats on bringing that Switch back to life! Very satisfying!
I'm watching you use the picks to lift the battery out. I personally use a membership card to get under batteries with a lot of adhesive as it's more flexible and doesn't snap. Been watching your videos since the first 10k. Keep it up!

Vince you are the man 👍 keep up the great work you do buddy!
Hi Vince I have been watching your videos for a bit now and I know that they are not meant to to be used as a tutorial but I do have to admit watching your videos gave me the courage to learn how to fix electronics that I wouldn't dare to before
Man, your reactions are the best thing on your videos. Keep the good work!
There is an adesive pull tab on the batteries it's that white triangle, you pry it up slowly from the connection side, and grab the white tip with tweezers and less risk of blowing it up
The pads are plated with gold because gald is not oxydable(doesn't corrode), by removing the gold layer, the pads will not be as durable as before.
True but if it fixes the problem long enough to sell it on ebay for more than you paid for it, then all's well. In any case the fix should last long enough for the new owner to drop it in the loo and then end up buying a new one

Excellent fix mate.... every second is a bliss to watch
Seriously happy for you for being able to fix this one, even though the blue joycon was a little too far gone to fix without buying parts.
Fantastic repair Vince! That kapton tape is exactly what I would have used too - it looks identical and will hold it perfectly. Shame the battery died but overall it turned out super well considering all the corrosion! It was certainly a fun one to watch due to the number of fixes. Thanks ever so much for the mention too!!! =D
Thank you Chris, I bought a little lithium battery charger with protection from eBay (£2.29) that uses Mini USB for the power so I might be able to get the battery back up and running again if it trickle charges for a while :-) You deserve more than a mention. Everything you have suggested or recommended has been a winner. Big thumbs up to you :-)
Man im so paranoid with my switch. No drinks near it. No food.
I even vinyl wrapped it. Mostly so it would look different but also to hopefully protect it more
Congrats on finally fixing one. It's been a while and quite a few tries. But well done!
Well done Vince never give up....you can fix anything
Definitely not trying to say what's 'right', but in my 2 years of professional experience (~6 years 'non-professional') plugging a known liquid damaged electronic into a power source is a usually bad idea. Any remaining liquid inside the device that got shifted around could potentially fry even more surface mount components. I would always immediately disassemble and clean off all of the corrosion, residue, and any remaining liquid.
Isn’t a battery pack a power source?😉
@Valt青 The corrosion would still continue since the battery does apply power to the circuit while liquids are present thus potentially harming more ICs or other components. And a battery is indeed capable of starting a fire if it discharges too quickly, e.g. the positive shorts to ground via a corroded capacitor or something, common failure by corrosion.
Dehydrator and then full cleaning all corrosion is usually the way to go
Can we start a crowdfunder to get Vince a knife to open packages?. Those dull 1950's scissors are killing me.

Prefacing this with the fact that I know nothing about anything, but after replacing the battery in an iPhone years ago my advice is after getting access to the "cellotape", pull it parallel to the battery like one of those Command hook adhesive things that are easily removable. Might not be similarly designed, but something to try.
This video was really cool, thanks for sharing!
Nice fix! With water damage, current from
The battery will take the shortest distance which is why it causes so much damage. It also corrodes parts as there’s a reaction between current and water which is more than likely why that battery connector was in such bad condition. Also look for discolouration on caps with water damage as this can give you an idea of where issues will be coming from with water damage. And a tip, don’t use metal tools with batteries, if you puncture it they have a very bad habit of catching fire very quickly ( I’ve known people to have fires from these ) . Keep up the great videos!
20 minutes in. "Maybe itll only need a good scrub." Looks at the time. Yeaaa if only lol.

Vince ,Can i give you some suggestions ? I am no pro but have some experience.
For contact cleaner use Deoxit d100 also use a little on oxidation on ribbon cables don't scrub them you have the risk to damage them more.
Never try to repair ribbon cables with solder it is a total waste of time .
Don't set your solder iron temp higher then 50 °C above the melting point of the solder you use. 300 to 350 is more than enough otherwise you risk damaging the tracks and the parts you try to solder .I see in some of your videos you set your temps to 400 and above no need for that ,same with the heat gun and if you have big groundpads heat the whole board in a oven to a 100°C but first set your solder iron to 100°C and test all the plastic parts that you can't get off like the plastic in the usb socket and the connectors from ribbon cables etc.
You have a ultrasonic cleaner use that before trouble shoot for hours ,after cleaning with the ultrasonic flood it with IPA to get rid of the cleaning solution and moisture blow it dry .
It is a lot safer than scrubbing .
Jacksat Good advices overall, but using an ultrasonic cleaner before fault identification is a bad one. This way you minimize the chance to find a fault per visual inspection, which should be the first thing.
@@AttilaTheHun333333 100% agree ,but he already did a visual inspection and identified corrosion so instead by scrubbing with IPA and that horrible fibreglass pen and risk more damage especially on delicate flat flex cables with the super thin traces .
@@jacksat2252 ok fair enough, but you seemed to give generalized advice, not explicitly to this video. You even talked about soldering, but he didn't even touched the iron in this one. So again, seemed to me like you talk in general.
I disagree with your opinion to the fiberglass scrubbing pen... it's actually a really gentle way of cleaning such bad oxidation.
@@AttilaTheHun333333 It is maybe some generalized advice but i wrote this in the first comment "I see in some of your videos " and i particular refer to the repair on the PS Vita when he charred the pcb trying to get the solder out of that one hole ,just leave in there put the new usb socket in place re melt that solder so the ground pin would snap in place and solder the rest of the pins on lowest heat possible ,would save him a lot of hassle and frustration .
He can take this experience to his next projects. This is not criticism but some advise from a 49 year old who can be wrong to but is never too old to learn new things (better not faster ).like your advise on the fiberglas pen.
Thank you for that Attila TheHUN.
That is what the comments are ,to help each other ,to learn ,but sometimes that is forgotten and comment sections are full of rude shit.
Luckily not in this community ,i read nothing but nice and helpful advice or suggestions.
Vince keep doing what you are doing. 👍 👍 👍
Yeah and NEVER use lead-free solder - get the real stuff - 60:40 tin/lead rosin core. You can get it easily on ebay cheaper than your local hardware shop will sell you the crappy unleaded stuff. Lead free solder has a higher melting point and a more corrosive flux which effectively adds up to built-in unreliability. Go check out Big Clive to hear his opinions on lead-free solder...
wow people treat their switches poorly my goodness. GJ fixing it though!

As someone that works with lithium batteries all the time i warn agenst charging those types of batteries after they go below 2 volts per cell. It can cause the battery to go up in flames, Even if you do get them to change they will hold like no power. Not worth it imo

There is an old saying about "flogging a dead horse" that springs to mind. Nice fix though Vince!
Cool video. Exciting when it finally booted! I would have nervously tried a pink pencil eraser on the ribbon cable connectors instead of my fiberglass pen to start.
batteries have protection to protect them from overcharge or overdischarge.
when the voltage drops a lot the protection circuit disconnect the battery from the power source(to avoid lithium to start burn).
thats why massively overdischarged batteries most likely cant be recharged.
They also have temperature sensors too (i was almost blown up by my phone but the battery told the phone "im too hot stop charging me" so the phone said it would stop charging the battery until it was at a safe temperature, it was at about 45% but i left the phone plugged in so it was running from the charger and did not charge anymore until it cooled down to around 35°C)
I was going to write the same thing!
Its not the lithium that is so dangerous with these batteries. Its the lithium hexafluorophosphate that likes to react.
Nice video and love your trying to fix videos
Your enthusiasm is contagious! I'm glad you managed to fix this Switch - I used to use sticky tape to fix Commodore joy sticks (the same way you did with the volume button) back in the eighties.
With liquid ingress, most of the damage and corrosion is caused by the reaction of the minerals dissolved in the liquid with electricity playing a part, causing electrolysis on exposed connectors. In theory, dropping a Switch into completely pure deionized (distilled) water should not cause any damage but I wouldn't just do it to test the theory!
6:10 i swear the screen flashes on ever so slightly
Gabe Hardy it’s a switch seizure
How many nintendo switchs do you have vince

Hi Vince. Firstly I really enjoy watching your videos. I did not take the time to scroll through all the comments, but as for removing batteries which are stuck down. Try and add some IPA around the battery to loosen/dissolve some of the adhesive . I use this technique when removing iPhone batteries.
