    I live in Edmonton, Alberta , Canada where we routinely get -35 to -40 Celcius in the peak of winter. My wife and I have a 5000 L pond with 16 Koi and a small army of Rosie reds. The fish never leave the pond. In the winter, we cover the pond with 2x4 and 1" rigid foam insulation + a simple tarp. The temperature in maintained with a 1000 Watts cattle water heater that is thermo switched to turn on between 0C and 5C. The pond stays covered for 5 months. All pumps are turned off including the filter ( no need in the winter) and UV light. The only pump we maintain on is a small 1/2 " with a home made venturi that helps feed O2 in the water. Once the snow falls, the insulation is such that plants like day lilies, cat tails and water lilies grow in the 1" of air space. The fish feed on bottom stuff and the occasional food ( we built a hatch door).

    U can heat your pond by using the grounds heat during the winter. Easy too do. Matter a fact I am planning on doing it this summer and I'll record it all and updates just to show. I will have both above and below pond in one.

    This is my first time having a pond in my yard and my first winter. I'm nervous my fish will die but watching some of the videos do help soothe that worry. I find a lot of videos that talk about winterizing the pond, but none that mention what do do with the pond plants I currently have in the water. Should I take them out? Leave them? What will happen to the fish if I leave them? When's the latest I should take them out to not disturb the fish? Also, I took the waterfall out (out of fear the hose would freeze and the pump would burn out). But now the water is not being filtered. I don't know how else to filter the pond. I put an aerator in it's place to still add oxygen. Will the fish survive if the water is not being filtered? This first winter will surely be a big learning experience.

      If you have hardy goldfish don't worry about them. Plants do make waste in the water. Leave them in especially now .Get a heater and a air pump . I personally have 3 goldfish 17 inches long . This year I made it bigger and deeper. Leaving in Chicago it does get very cold but fish do fine in winter.

      depends on the plants, water hyacinth and water lettuce seem to be tropical plants that are treated as annuals (fish em out and compost / trash / buy new next year) some others you trim the bits and let them sit in the pond seems (still researching not yet overwintered a pond)

    Found this because I am trying to see if our turtles will need heat? I am in Southern California, warmer weather here, but in the house they need quite a bit of light and heat and even here they don't get that amount outside.

      We're not experts on turtles so I wouldn't want to pretend to know. I would contact the person you bought the turtles from to see what they require for heat. I'm sure different types of turtles require different things.

    • @everythingponds
      @everythingponds  Před 5 lety

      Hello Ashutosh, thank you for your comment. To get the best advice for your breed of turtle, in your location, please consult the company that you purchased your turtles from. Different species of both fish and turtles have different temperature requirements. A rule of thumb is to never allow the ice to freeze over in a pond that is housing creatures. As always, the safest way to ensure your critters are warm and happy is to bring them inside - although it may not be necessary. Further research on your particular breed is necessary.

    • @everythingponds

      Hello Jonathan, yes, if you have a reliable solar system you can. The problem occurs if the solar system runs out of power. Frequent temperature changes are not ideal for supporting an ecosystem.

    what does it cost to heat a pond if you are using solar power?

    • @everythingponds
      @everythingponds  Před 2 lety

      you would need a large amount of solar to produce enough wattage So I guess the answer is the cost is free once the panels are installed. However, you would have to pay the price of installing a large solar system with batteries first.
