- This is Koishi Komeiji's theme from Touhou 11: Subterranean Animism
(Sorry 'bout the long wait, I went on holiday.)
This theme is... I don't know!! It's cool, fast, epic, scary, creepy, badass, hyper, optimistic, ooh, such a wide range of adjectives that shouldn't be in the same sentence together! And Koishi herself is, well, all of that too. I'll give her some credit for her creativity, even though it backfired on her. 'Cause trust me, I wouldn't know what to do with a creepy mind reading skill given to me by an even creepier looking eye attached to me. So, congrats Koishi, even though you're pretty much a psychopath now.

You know, she shows the emotions, but she simply feels nothing inside to do them, she just shows them... for the sake of showing them ._.

IsGamer Okuu is only dangerous due to her raw power. Satori can replicate spells, but nothing more. Orin... She just carries cosplaying fairies around in her cart, how is that dangerous? (Though, she IS pretty damn difficult).

***** A surprise insta-destroy from Flandre could work. however, this would be unlikely because she would first have to notice her, a nearly impossible thing to do. Also, because Koshi isn't in (conscious) control of her power, she would be unable to prevent an enemy from killing her if she didn't feel in danger.
She is pretty god damn powerful though. No doubt about that.
All irony of Koishi being a super popular character despite her in-universe trait of being instantly forgotten about and barely noticeable, she's a damn clever character. A Satori who can no longer read minds, including her own, and is thus entirely instinct driven and unpredictable. I love how everything about her further feeds into this chaotic aspect of her- her spellcard are some of the strangest in the series, she has the wierdest fighting style in the fighting games, and even her theme has a bunch of eccentricities about it, like its odd time signature and the fact that it can be played backwards and still sound roughly the same. It really feels like ZUN went all out on making her as bizarre a character as she could be, and it really works.
This theme really solidifies her whole thing of being entirely unpredictable and instinct-driven. It starts by disorienting you with a frantic melody with an unusual time signature that's tough to pin down even for someone who knows music theory, then a buildup that while still tense sounds much less chaotic eventually turns into an unexpected moment of calm clarity. The calm slowly builds up more and more until before you know it, you're back in the chaos where the song began. Just like Koishi vanishes from your memories leaving nothing but a vague feeling, only for you to find her right before your eyes again as if she never left.
We not gonna talk about how the fandom has a Bastardized perception of her because of her Last Word in AoCF? She didn't choose to reference the folktale of Mary, Marisa suggested it to her and Koishi merely acted the part while thinking it would be cool, it's one of those moments where i think we the Fandom took things too far

The fandom has a bastardized perception of like 90% of Touhou characters, let's be real here. Momiji, Meiling, Yuuka, Alice, Kiene, Aya, Sanae, Ran, Yuyuko, Eiki, Tenshi... The only characters that I really feel the fandom consistently portrays accurately are Youmu, Marisa, and Komachi.
@@timmyreobed5043 I bring up Koishi as a specific example because of how much of what the fans think of her overwhelms who she actually is, and stating 90% of the character roster is an over exaggeration, I haven't seen much Touhou fanworks that try and make the characters true to form and miss the mark, the only times I've seen people make characters what they aren't is if it was intentional mostly because they're making a meme or joke about Touhou or using Touhou characters as a format for a different joke, again I bring up specifically Koishi since her fandom personality staggeringly overwhelms her normal one

Everything about this character is really genius in a subtle way.
Her name theme, her spellcards name, her color design, her concept and the structure of the theme itself, everything about it is a reference to eduard von hartmann and the whole concept of the subconcious.
That's one of the many cool things in touhou, behind the music, lore and the fancy lolita designs; when you analyze it, there's some pretty subtle references to history, culture, science and religion that fit when taking consideration of the characterization of the character or context they're in, thats pretty awesome and interesting.
Ahh yes I still have deep to dig in that regards, so I always love reading about things people noticed.
Anyways I've read something about her and being forgotten, and I wanted to ask if that also has some connection to the name Hartman. As Haltman's character in Planet Robobot is based on forgetting (And the name is a play on Hartman, in japanese should be litterally written the same).

If you look closely, you can see the faint shadow of a girl in the background. It’s kind of hard to see though, so you might need to turn your brightness up a bit.
Koishi's ability to control subconscious means she can prevent others from perceiving her, rendering her invisible. But I wonder if some of the higher level characters can overcome this ability. Like Akyuu the historian for example, if she couldn't perceive Koishi, then she wouldn't be able to document her history
Reminder that Koishi herself can't control the ability, because of her own lack of consciousness. But yes, Akyuu getting her on record and spreading awareness can work against it...if anyone outside of Kosuzu, Yukari, and Reimu ever actually reads the Gensokyo Chronicle!

Not to mention, the entire thing about Koishi is that she's essentially a dream. Even if Akyuu would be able to record her existence, nobody would actually believe it because they cannot perceive Koishi except unconciously.
Just to point out, in Hopeless Masquerade, Koishi has been conciously seen and recorded. However, once the power of the mask she held ran out, people forgot about her again. This means that, even IF you record her existence, she's still forgotten because she's just a dream.

Many of her spellcards' name and patterns are very scientific, notably 'Release of the Id', 'Superego', and the one in Double Spoiler, which represents the evolution of life.
Her look and Satori's, and 'The Two Fidas'.

Koishi is in all ways a hollow shell.
She runs entirely off instinct and impulsiveness since she has no way of really deciding anything and has no control over herself. Her design, theme, story, and mechanics are really ingenious. ZUN did well.

When I was young, I was a HUGE fan of Koishi. I even made concepts of fangames featuring her as a playable character.

I would love to see Koishi and Flandre as playable characters. Enough of the drunk miko, the junky witch, the DIO maid, the arahitogami who worships her mom's toxic friend and the crazy moon rabbit.
I wanted to something similar except I was planning on creating a game with interchangeable outfits on the characters and some of the secret outfits would be direct references to several franchises to the point where if you were to equip them they'd be strikingly close. Sadly, I discovered that my coding and digital design abilities were horrid.

I like to imagine that she is in a dream-like state, where her thoughts directly affect her actions, basically, since there is no conscious mind, there is no stopping random thoughts from affecting her actions. and even with this, she is pretty wholesome throughout the canon series, usually if one's thoughts directly affected actions, due to intrusive thoughts and all the clutter in mind this will basically result in chaos. which means Koishi actually has a super innocent mind. despite what part of the fandom thinks she is.

It's funny that the fandom's viewpoint on Koishi varies so wildly; one second, she's just plain murderous and like Fanon Flandre: Journey to Former Hell, and the other second she's innocent yet airheaded.
But then ZUN intended this satori youkai, all along, to be a girl who forcibly lobotomized herself and acts entirely on instinct - so now she typically swings between being Jevil and being Son Goku in terms of personality.
Very sweet, interesting, and slightly sad character, just don't suggest she go fishing

Should get into touhou, Koishi is a hell of a rabbit hole. Her theme's a musical palindrome, every single thing about her character is based around Sigmund Freud and Eduard von Hartmann's research on the subconscious, a lot of subliminal stuff all around. Makes sense when you learn more about her.

Someone needs to make an edit for this where the music forgets itself as it progresses. Maybe the title could be something like "Koishi's theme but the score is closing its third eye”
Starts off normal, but every two measures, do something like add static noise, slow the music, or repeat a phrase.
First transition, add more noise, repeat and reverse phrases, slow as the music ascends down to about half normal speed by the time it ends, and have the upward pattern continue for much longer than normal, then a scratch noise which leads to the second theme.
Second phase, have the static and white background noise increase every two measures, all while altering the time signature, swapping or repeating beats (randomly, it’s normally in 7/8 in this phase, but make it feel as the time signature itself is breaking down) keeping the half speed, have it cut to silent and cut back randomly, occasional sudden speedups, and swapping a beat with Satori's theme or Last Remote.
Second transition, static should be really loud and painful at this point, and the theme starts speeding up as it climbs, still with random repetitions, beat swaps (such as swapping beats 2 & 3 in one bar, then beats 1 & 4 the next) and silent cuts. Slowly speed it up to 4x normal speed as it continues climbing, then have it cut to a loud corrupted noise (similar to a BSOD) which fades off leaving only loud static noise and a long drone. Then play the static for 30 minutes alternating between loud and quiet static, along with distorted voices and sound effects from Koishi's attacks in ULiL and AoCF, as well as distorted shooting sounds, spellcard activation sounds, spell capture sounds, and miss (pichuun~) sounds when there is loud static, and when the static quiets down, a random soundtrack from SA would either start at a random pitch and low volume with the static and cut back to the static after a few bars, try to start but fail and only let you hear one or two notes, or start but in reverse and fainter than the (already quiet) static and noise, and have the loud-quiet static cycle for 30 minutes, each cycle slightly quieter and less chaotic than the last. After that, have the static quiet down to just the drones, and transition to the 3rd phase after 5 minutes and 14 seconds of just the drone.
Have the third phase play melancholically but without any corruptions, except when it gets to the end, cut to complete silence without playing the last note, wait 5 seconds, and end the video.
Someone already did the time signature part, so I'm waiting for someone else to make an even more painful edit.
