Mr. Banerjee, this is from a concert in February 1984 at Bharatiy Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai. This seems to be a copy of the original tape. I had once asked you to please let me know the source of your collection, so that I shall not repeat the same recordings unless they have a better audio quality, even though I have the originals of these. I urge you to please be transparent in the interest of us saving time and energy. Thank you.

'Original tape'/ 'original recording' - that is one paradox one never tires of hearing in ICM circles. Mr. Dravid, I do not understand your anxiety about the appearance of this great, divine music on Mr. Banerjee's channel. You yourself have uploaded some rare and beautiful music in the past, for which countless listeners like myself are grateful. There are bound to be repetitions - one has seen that in the past with numerous other musicians: what is the big apocalyptic harm in that? In fact, you should think and make more of your archive of Kishoriji's music accessible to the public, like Mr. Banerjee is doing. Custodians - self-appointed or artist appointed - cannot be proprietors, dunno why they begin to assume that.

And thank you for the metadata, Mr. Banerjee could consider adding that to the video here.

@@r.c.g8272 I was trying to save my time and energy by not repeating the recordings which Mr. Banerjee intends to upload. This is why I asked him the source out of curiosity, because I am perplexed as to how there are two original tapes of the same concert. It would be healthy to share such information instead of being secretive about it. There is no ill feeling here. I am 76 years old. My friend who owns the Sangeetveda channel is in his eighties. It would be nice if we could avoid repetitious uploading of identical recordings. However, if Mr. Banerjee is unwilling to cooperate I shall do what is prudent. Thank you for your views.

@@arundravid4352 Mr. Dravid sir, I do not know, or speak for Mr. Banerjee, nor do I imply that there is any ill feeling on your part. I must say, however, that the use of the word 'transparent' sounded very proprietorial to me. I do understand your point better now, despite the persistence of some confusions.
I hope you agree with me that there can certainly be two "original" tapes (though as I imply in the first message, a recording is by definition, not 'original') if, for instance, two people happened to have recorded a particular concert independently themselves. It is wholly possible that one recording is better than the other - recording equipment, place where the recorder was positioned, ambient noise etc. You could even say, perhaps, that one particular person may have been authorised by the artist to record - and therefore that recording could be considered to be an 'authorised copy' - though again, the connotations of such a term are vague at best. What is the meaning of 'original recording' in such a random scenario? Any copy-recording made from an 'original' would necessarily be identical. I fail to comprehend, therefore, how do we know what is original in the world of recordings.
If I understand correctly, you are saying that owing to your age, uploading music has become difficult: I fully sympathise with that. Still, my feeling is that repetition or overlaps do not diminish the effort, they only reinforce the safeguarding of that particular recording - if tomorrow, god forbid, Mr. Banerjee's channel were to crash for whatever reason, we will still have yours, and vice versa. :) As such, to me, uploading more and more musical wealth for the benefit of ordinary and humble listeners like myself would at least save you the futile trouble of having to select - that sounds like musical prudence to me. Kind regards.

@@r.c.g8272 Thank you sir for your elaborate reply. I will make this a short one, and we will happily close this discussion.
The tapes that were either recorded by me personally (most of them) or by other confidants of Kishoritai, were handed over to me by her for safe keeping. But more importantly, for protecting them against decay with time. I also improved their audio quality in later years after digitizing them by removing the tape hiss, Easter's passages of Tabla retuning, etc. And equalising. (See details in my comments under the Basanti Kanada upload.) In about mid 2990's after digitizing them, they were delivered back to Kishoritai. This was hundreds of hours of pains-taking effort. Anyway, copies made from the original tapes would not have the benefit of this "post-production" editing. And you are also right that some others may have recorded some of them independently and secretly, without Tai's permission. None of that matters now. I am choosing the best of each Raag (there are 5-10 recordings of each Raag from various concerts at various times and venues). Also adding anecdotal notes where appropriate for the benefit of listeners. Thank you once again for your comments. Let us end this dialog now.
