What a great setup. My son is getting a Catalina 25 and plans on sailing it solo, so something like this will be important for him. He plans on going to a bunch of different lakes including Lake Michigan. I'll be going with him (he's 34, I'm 65) on some trips and will be helping him set up his boat so knowing what you did and how you did it is priceless. I've got a welder and can do a bit of welding myself, so we'll be able to fabricate those poles and modify the trailer to accept a winch. The guy he's buying the boat from used it solo for spear fishing, so it may already be set up for one person to do the rigging. We've only seen pictures of it so far and will be driving about 3 hrs next weekend to see it for the first time.

NFJob! Congrats!!....Love the the fab detail on the hardware and the electric. I just came up with my contraption on my 19' -27' mast. I mounted a hand winch via ratchet straps on the mast 6' up and tied the hook to a post set up I mount in my pick up bed. I use a long crutch so my transition between slack and tension on the sides stays is very short. The mast is up is 10-20 seconds. I'm always looking for how other people do things to check my design and make possible improvements. Thanks for sharing!

I appreciate the video and insight. Everyone makes it so difficult to step a mast. I simply added a winch on my trailer that connects to the forestay and winch it up. Some people spend more time stepping the mast than sailing. I keep my boat at a marina and it stays on the trailer in which the mast never comes down unless I need to do some work.

This is exactly what I've been wanting to do! And I have the same boat! Thanks so much for posting

Thank you so much for sharing! I’ve watched about a zillion videos on how to make a diy mast raising system and was not really sure about any of them. Then I saw this and knew immediately … yup, this is what my marriage needs! Well done, sir!

Nice video and a great option to step the mast. If you position the jib pole further down the mast, you could attach the roller furler to the end of it. I use an A-frame and works quite well where the roller furler (forestay) end connects to the top of the A-frame and positions itself right at the forestay connection. If the roller furler is bent even slightly, you run the risk of damaging one of the joints. That happened to me and I needed to repair the joint.

Was it a Harken furler foil you damaged? Did you have to replace the forestay to fix it? I bought a C25 with a broken foil and need to repair it but it doesn't seem like it will be a smooth easy fix.

@@detchie69 Is was a "Hood Yacht Systems" fuller, pretty old. Each joint has a small aluminum sleeve to connect the ends of the sections. The aluminum bent and one of the sections cracked. I did what most sailors in the "field" would do. I took an aluminum rod with the same diameter as the track, put it in the track (mine has two tracks) to keep it together. I used JB Weld to keep the rod from moving up or down. It worked and still works.

You can leave your top shrouds on. But very loose just a few turns on the turnbuckle. The gin pole method works fine but you don't need a power winch a 4to1 block set up works just as good. The mast crutch is a must the mast needs to be At least on a thirty degree angle.

Important point, Always point the boat into the wind when raising the mast, or else!!!

all good, but can you talk about the special pivoting mast step you had to create? Thanks.

Very nice setup you have. I wish i had a trailer and am very interested in how you modified yours from a motor trailer.

Anyone have a height and weight comparison between a C25 mast and a C27 mast?

Cat 25= 29’ regular and 31’ for tall rig. Cat 27 = 34.5’ for regular and 36’ for tall rig. These are for sail sizes so the mast will generally be 2 to 3 feet longer.
