- What's up cuzins!!??
In this video I venture out to Home Depot and Lowe's to do in store walk throughs in search of my personal TOP 5 JON BOAT BUILD MATERIALS. These are items I have confidence in, used in my #topgunjonboat build, and are also specific to my style of building (wood framing, ect.) I honestly could have made a Top 50 video but due to content and time constraints I will keep it simple and limit it to 5 materials. Obviously you will need a lot more than what is in this video series to complete a full jon boat build. I feel the items mentioned are a great starting point for anyone interested in beginning a boat build.
After my introduction in this PART 1 video I walk the aisles of Home Depot and Lowes. I show you the products I have selected and give you my product knowledge of said materials.
After each product category, I will do a demo of the product in my boat and how I implemented it in the build process.
Again, not an expert, just a serious hobbyist trying to pass on my journey of creative expression and fabrication in my jon boat build.

Thanks for the content brother. Pumped to start my build!
What a great video! Thanks so much for taking the time out of your busy life to show us this.
No problem, glad you enjoy the channel, thanks for checking it out!
Super Clean build! I like the stowaway light bar! Good idea.
Thanks for all the tips and tricks.
Another A.J.??? You really my cuzin... Thanks cuzin!
Can't wait to see the next video! As always great job and keep up the great work man! Gonna start mine this spring and watching your videos are very inspiring!
Thanks man!!!
Great video! Fixin to start a build,so it helps me a lot! Thanks Ernie
No problem thanks for watching!
Thank you for the great ideas for making a better jon boat, will be very helpful when I do my project
welcome back master!!
Nice video Anthony. Saved it to refer back once I begin my 1448 jonboat to bass boat build. 👍
I’m late to the game, but I just finished up a three month journey of bartering to get my first boat setup. You’re vid is super helpful , thanks for being humble man! You’ve got my thumbs up
Nice, congratulations! Thanks for tuning in, appreciate the comment 👊
Love the videos. Your boat is really something. I have a pretty good idea of what direction I want to go with my jon boat. Thanks...
No problem thanks for tuning in!
Excellent detail and content Thank you!
Awesome video and info.
I saw those plywood prices, and thought "where does he live? Theres no plywood for $20 around here" - then I realized this video is a couple years old. :P
Greetings and Thanks for the Awesome videos! Can I use Cardboard soaked in resin and fiberglass (inter-locked and laid out strategically perhaps grid style or something) for the support/frame system instead of wood for an even lighter finish weight? What do you think about that?
Most importantly, how much total weight did the modified decking (including, hatches, switches, screws, carpeting, etc.) did this add to the boat? What was the total cost?
Cool vid appreciate this thanks !
Nearest cleanest build iv seen wow just wow tiny boat nation ain't got shit on you man lol. You are good at what you do
Good clean content. I’m using the 2x2 framing as well. Using a lot of your tips and ideas. Hope you don’t mind. Ready to see that boat in the water.
Don't mind at all. It's why I do it. Yeah me too. Hopefully someday soon.
What size / kind of plywood is recommended for a floor? I don’t plan on building a casting deck, just a raised floor cut around the rivets. I have a Lowe 1436L. Thanks
Your a perfectionist bro u literally have the dopest Jon boat on earth
Thanks bro. Funny thing is, I plan on doing a video on the things I could have done better...
*You're
2:57 omg, it's like reliving a core memory! (sniff) I remember prices like that! It seems like just four years ago. And then the fire nation attacked. If only we had known back then what we had. Ah, the innocence of youth.
Just curious, what kind of carpet did you use. I want the same exact color you’ve got
Sheet metals the way to go but I got pretty lucky because my dad works on air plains, he got me some sheet metal with some kinda composite in the middle of it, supper strong and lighter than wood
That's awesome! I'd love to try some of that. I'm doing all aluminum builds now but when I started out, wood was a great diy friendly option
3M 5200 marine sealant is always nice to have around also. Good for water tight sealing around screws and rivets. Sold at Home Depot. Lowe’s doesn’t carry it in the store.
Great comment. My thought process was that you need wood, screws, hardware, carpet, paint ect. Honestly you need a lot for a build but yeah the marine sealant is a huge deal for sure.
I bass fish on a 163 acre lake that allows only electric motors. And my 18 1/2 bass boat gets blown all over by the ever present wind. I think an 18’ Jon boat with a modified V Hull would do the trick. I want three inline pedestal seats, your DIY build is the first I’ve seen like that. Except I would need more battery storage for a 12/24 trolling motor.
Been searching your videos and can't find any that talk about which jon boat (make, model, size) to buy to start as a project.
I can't find the Micheal lopez one. Thanks for sharing.
How much did your other build cost you in aluminum+wood
Subbed up. RN I'm working on a Duracraft 1519 with a built 25 tohatsu. This boat is pretty quick to be a DC. Getting 33mph with two people and 34mph with just me. Funny how weight distribution works. Quick question do you have any experience with Duracraft boats?
Where I live our home Depot acts as if they have never heard of Western red, can I use spruce pine for 2x2 framing long as it is properly coated with paint or should I order Western red and wait?
Man it just depends on how serious you wanna get. The red is less dense than pine therefore lighter. It could save you a couple pounds through a whole build. But yeah, any wood is fine so long as you seal it properly!
Paint it with a good high gloss oil based enamel or exterior varathane and you'll be golden. Possibly even better than a poorly sealed cedar and cheaper to boot. Two coats min.....three is better
What did you treat the wood with ?
If I’m screwing plywood to the aluminum seat what is the best stew to use that won’t strip out of the aluminum bench seat
Idk about the best but where I attached things to aluminum I used stainless sheet metal screws. Only thing is to make sure to drill a pilot hole barely smaller than the screw thread diameter to the screen go in tightly and still grab metal without stripping. Again, that's just what I did,I had limited screws into metal in my boat.
Anthony Jones ok that’s helpful. The only spot I’m screwing into my entire boat is the rear deck to the seat
Do you know or have a idea of how much weight you added? Trying to figure out what I need to stay around weight wise.
I like to think the weight I've added to the boat (all framing, decking, batteries), foam) would be equivalent to me taking my really overweight buddy out in the boat. So I know the batteries are 63 pds each times two. I'd think all framing and decking is around 200 pds give or take. Worst case I'm under 500 best case right at 300. Or maybe I'm just too optimistic with how lightweight my materials and techniques were. I did the build with weight heavily under consideration though.
Dude you look totally different. Where you been. Quit being PC your a pro your work is top notch brother.
Haha, man you know the deal with the disclosure stuff... But we bought some land, built a house, still trying to get my new shop set up. It's been a ton of work. Yeah, I haven't shaved in a minute either, lol
@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats been there done that it's over whelming but it's worth it all in the end. I'll be building my shop next spring.
I’m worried about overloading my Jon boat. About how much weight do you think you added to the hull when building this?
200 pds. All framed in 2x2 western red Cedar which is ultra light per linear ft, closed cell foam, and 15/32 plywood. I was incredibly weight conscious in this build. Out of the weight added, a majority of it is from the batteries which weigh roughly 100+pds
That plywood at 20 bucks a sheet. Damn I miss the good ole days
Wish i could go back man. Things are insane in the world these days
I would love to do this but I have one question, what happens when it rains and where would the water go ?
Same place it goes if there is no modifications at all. Bottom of the boat to the water channels which gravity takes effect to direct it to the rear of the boat where I have a bilge pump. The entire build is planned around the fact water will get in the boat at some point hence, sealing all wood, using stainless screws, allowing spots within fabrication to allow water to channel, ect. No different than a real bass boat I guess. I have a modified 1100 gallons per hour bilge pump to ensure whether a leak or act of God doesnt sink the boat hopefully.
Which screws are the ones you used for the 2x2 framing ?
GRK, I use a variety depending but a lot of 3 inch
Do you have any info on how to add the proper insulation to the boat , where do you add it and what type of material do you use and how to you attach it? Many people do boat builds and talks bout material but it doesn’t seem like anyone goes over what type of material they use to add buoyancy to the boat after adding all that weight with the wood framing decking etc,,,,, any insight would be be greatly appreciated
Plenty of videos on foam. Fireant Fishing has one on his channel with over a quarter million views. Tbnation has a bunch on his channel, even talks about pour foam. I was past the foam stage when I started my channel. You talk about weight added, I only added 200pds total and that was with batteries. I used western red cedar which is incredibly light and 2x2s at that, only added a few pds. I used 15/32 plywood, again minimal weight. The biggest thing was the batteries which added 100pds.
Anyhow, the insulation I added is just something to help dampen vibration and noise, add rigidity under the floor, and of course help the boat float longer if it takes on water.

Good stuff try penetrating epoxy for wood waterproofing
Where you at the zaxbys in watkinsville the other day?
Yes. I had my blue boat on the trailer. We were going to Savannah.
What are the measurements of your boat? Length? And width of floor? @anthony jones! I was thinking about converting my Jon boat boat bug am afraid it would become to unstable if I was to try and fish from a casting deck on it?
14 Ft , 38 inch floor, early 90s GRUMMAN
Thanks for the reply, your videos are some of the best on CZcams.
@@dylanmathews7233 No problem, thanks for watching, good luck on your build!
Hey man sorry if I missed it, but what screws did you use to drill in the boat with? Or what do you recommend
If your drilling through the hull or ribs any bit that is rated for aluminum should work. I personally use a variety of bits from different companies but I've used the Black Oxide series from dewalt a bunch. They work good and are affordable. I usually start small, like 1/16 or 1/8 then work my way up through the bits to the diameter the hole I need. I actually buy a bunch of 1/16 separately because I use them a lot for pilot holes so I'm always breaking them or burning them up. Hope this helps some.
Anthony Jones Thanks man I appreciate it
Anthony Jones j
Where do you get the carbon fiber coverings?
Link should be in a video, there's actually a video specifically on it on my channel
I live in Athens GA
Hi bru I'm trying to reach out to you I have a John boat I would like for you to take a look at 16 foot
What screws did you use for plywood to anchor it down?
Using 2 inch GRK construction screws coated in grey paint t to hide in the carpet.
I will go over screws in PART 2 video
@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats perfect thanks again! Trying to do my build and using a lot of your tips!
@@brianfranks3123 Apparently I dont even know my own videos lol. I just realized I went over screws in Part 1. lol. Nonetheless i use those GRK ones!
@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats great thanks! I wasn't sure if you actually screwed the decking in bc you cant see it! So GRK and painted smoke gray! I'm looking at doing that for my build too.
What about Advantech, for the decking?
If you have a Fastenal store (or similar) they usually have better prices for fasteners.
what happens when in rains on all the wood
I guess you've really not looked into anything I've posted whatsoever. I seal the wood in fiberglass resin. It makes it 100% waterproof and impermeable. I even did a video on it. Come on man
You have a ig?
1st
LoL
My husband used these plans from woodprix and he's very satisfied.
man them wood costs in late 2018/early 2019. those days are gone.
I hope you use copper free wood
western red cedar.
Can you come build my boat?¿😂
The best screws last forever.
True statement
Isn't "Western Red" Cedar? How about using actual marine grade plywood? I know it would cost more, but that is a real high grade plywood.
Yes, My most recent video, WOOD FRAMING, features it.
You can use whatever plywood you like, i prefer to save weight. Marine ply is incredibly heavy and could put your build very heavy and inefficient , i fish electric only reservoirs where every pound matters and effects the boats performance and top speed.
@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats It's "heavy" because it is dense which translates to strong which requires less of it to accomplish the same structural strength so instead of using 1/2" cdx you could get by with 3/8 marine grade and still have a stronger flor than the thicker less compatable cdx. buy once cry once
Why weight your boat down with lumber, put every bit of the lumber you normally use on a scale and see how much weight it is, I go with all aluminum framing and 1/16" aluminum sheets and yes the sheet is expensive and it's cheaper to get the 4'×8' which is $98 more or less
That's great. Your a bit late to the party as this video is YEARS old. I now build all my boats out of aluminum. But not because it is lighter. Because it lasts longer and I can guarantee it will not get damaged by water for my customers boat projects. That's right, years after this video I now build boats professionally. Guess what I learned? Aluminum is not lighter. Yes, 1/16 angled aluminum is lighter than a 2x4 but I framed my boat out of 2x2 (1.75x1.75) custom ripped western red cedar. Feather lite. For aluminum decking, you should be using .090. At least .080. This is pound for pound as heavy as wood sheet of 1/2 plywood. Funny enough, I used 11/32 plywood in my first build, making it lighter than an aluminum one. Weigh it? I did .On camera. My entire rear deck framing system in the 1436 weighed less that 6 pounds. I recently built a 1232 and the cockpit floor system alone out of aluminum weighed close to 40 pounds including sheeting, hat channel, and angled. That's pretty heavy. Big misconception about aluminum being lighter. Not if it's compared to cedar and thinner plywood. Anyhow, it's obvious you haven't watched any of my other 50 plus videos on my channel, including my most recent ones where I have videos on how to deck in aluminum, how to frame in aluminum, aluminum floor system, or the past 4 step by step builds all in done in aluminum.
To bad we don't have a home depot across the pond
Important info begins at 1:33
Home depot has great tools. Lowes has kobalt which is good. Every time I go to Lowe's to do a project, I shop and have a cart full of stuff but get to the end of my list and they're out of the stuff I need. I try to find alternative ways to complete the project but end up having to purchase and piece together 6, 8, 10 pieces and $20,30,40 more and end up saying screw it and leaving a full buggy in the aisle and going to home Depot.
How much that rough grain now huh? 😂
129.00 a stick
@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats sad times
lowes is alot cleaner than home depot well at least in waxahachie texas
Those wood prices 😔
Truly unbelievable.
10:50 who says you can’t go home by Bon Jovi and Jennifer Nettles was playing, no point I just love Bon Jovi!
Okay hoor
I feel like this should be an eight to ten minute video, not two twenty minute videos
Your probably right although you wouldn't get near the info in an 8-10 min video. But I definitely feel where your coming from. Try to keep my newer content short and sweet where I can!
Holy crap guys....DON"T buy big box lumber go to a proper lumber yard and pay less and get better quality lumber. DON'T buy rough sawn lumber. It's like buying a sponge. How can you seal it? You can't. You don't need knotty thick lumber, you need flat smooth clear lumber that has more strength in less weight. That's what you get in clear straight grained lumber. You won't find that at home depot.
aluminum all the way no wood to heavy
You must not know redwood is half the density of pine therefore half the weight which makes 2x2 redwood lighter per ft than 1/8 angled aluminum. You must be new here...
I'd go to lowes instead of hd anyday. Home depot is a ripoff
Jesus Christ America, its 2020, time to move to metrics already!
Never
why? you have problem reading a tape or something? This is America...Americans use Imperial Measurements. Why do I want to be "THE GUY" that uses the non standard (for the country I live in) measurement system. If you can't read a tape going metric won't help.
@@edstimator1 because tape measures in the rest of the world don't have inches on them! And this might surprise you but the internet is available all over the world now and so is youtube!
