- Racing kills all the fun of RC, and sometimes we need a slap back into reality. Fun is the missing reality of racing and Tamiya is often the hand in the equation. Here's our video review of the Tamiya Rally Beetle. Our review can be found in issue #29 of Velocity RC Cars Magazine.

This is definitely on my list of cars I want to acquire. It looks like it exists for the reason many Tamiya RC models exist: to be an inexpensive way to have fun. I know that Tamiya models tend to garner a lot of hate from people who are into the hardcore bashing or racing side of the hobby. They simply fill a different role in the hobby, though, and I like that about them. I have a CC-01 and a Clodbuster that are AWESOME rigs for what I do with them. Different strokes for different folks!
Jon Geddes you are correct, but I wouldn’t call them inexpensive. The bodies are super detailed and expensive.
Tamiya rules!!
Well said, brother! I’ve been grabbing old used Tamiyas left and right lately and adding modern electronics. Not great on a track but we have a course we do at home partially paved and partially smooth dirt. Getting my 7 and 9 year old girls into the hobby! People say to me all the time “you really want to boys.” I say “heck no, I want what every guy wants; girls who like cars!”
Tamiya makes such cool stuff. If you are a Tamiya fan this car makes total sense. If you don't get it, that's cool too. There is something for everyone. Thanks for the review.
Really fun video.
Tamiya is kind of expensive and kind of cheap. They usually include a motor and ESC, which is awesome, but then they only have bushings, and the geometry and design has a lot of "why?" built in. Great fun though and I hate seeing kids get into the hobby with an 50 mph RTR when they can't handle it and really should be building a kit instead.
That looks like a lot of fun.... It is what it is!!!! I love the little rooster tails behind it
I got the "Yeah Racing" long span suspension and oil filled dampers and of course ball bearings. It performs much better. I am also using a stock brushless17.5 motor which the included speed supports . Works much better and is fun to drive.
Yes, that is what this Volkswagen is. Tamiya does make other Bugs but they are not 4wd like this one is. @@anyajenkins4611
Sometimes I think Tamiya makes such barebones kits to make them accessible for new hobbyists. Other times I think they do it to generate a large market for upgrade parts.
I suppose it serves both purposes.
Those Tamiya servo savers are always a bit tricky. Using the correct screw is critical. It needs something long enough with a washer to keep the servo saver held together.
Ace Report or just not using one 😬
Awsome bought one for my wife busy building it now i did notice them plastic bearings went next to to the shop & bought the steel bearings but yeah i dont think it is a race car at all but it is a beetle pretty cool great video good review thanks
Now I’m getting one. Great video
Veramente un bel video... ciao dall'Italia
I have the original 2wd. Version and now I think I need this one too
You aren't racing with the right people if you think racing sucks the fun out of RC. I race with a club that boasts several national and regional ROAR champions and it is nothing but fun. From the track setup to the end of the night chili cheese fries at the local bar, racing with my club is a blast.
nortran11 I agree with you and we did red cup Wednesday when slash was fun.
That's awesome! Not meant for a beating but it looks great!
I'd like to see a Rally Mini Cooper s
I love it
If anyone has a cure for the steering wander I'd love to hear it. I literally have to calibrate the steering as I'm driving it as it starts veering after a few minutes.
Would love to see a spec class like this.or even the MO7...Problem is..THen you would have to have an open class..Race what you brung class..THen things get super competitive..and what you brung doesnt cut it..Then Spec class looks lame..THen you have to buy the best and replace it often as new stuff comes along to stay competitive in the world of milliseconds..
And that whats wrong with this hobby..Think I'll just stick to bashing my T/A B4 Team KIt ..THanks..
Steve Dawe There is an easy way to prevent people from running costly spec cars.
Make a rule that you have to swap your car with another driver upon request.
Mind you I don think there is much you could do to this car that would make it run better.
Household Dog Swap your car upon request? Lol are you joking? Would you let another racer bash your car? I sure as hell wouldn't.
Chris Watson Nope, keep the bodies, that's it.
There are low cost racing classes in real life that do a very similar thing.
Only tamiya I’ve ever own is a touring the 417 it was good but still prefer Associated tamiya is more of a model not really racing or bashing they make good looking products
what camera you using?
Video? Gopro and iPhone.
Hahaha Love this video. It is bashable!
Damn this video just talked me out of buying a Tamiya!! They’re for show, not for GO!!!
They go but it’s not a full fledge pro race car. Still fun.
Hi guys, that's a sweeeet wee rig.
Awesome. 😀 👍 👍 👍
Excellent review, to the point. Do you feel that this kit would benefit the Tamiya 54000 shocks upgrade. I have many Tamiya kits, very tempted to order this one. ;-)
Gary Burke oil will always make it happier. But I like the bounce. It adds to the goofy fun, but oil will make it better for rally events.
The review was a great but it seemed lack luster as if you wanted to say don't buy.I actually have this Kit putting the body together alone is some high tech rc stuff.lol..it is a basher definitely with all the the potential of a Feisty shelf queen. On the shelf or in action she looks and drives great .The Reedy 3300kv Brushless set up in try e associated brings it to life but controllable
james drayton we didn’t say don’t buy it. We fully understand why Tamiya releases things like this. I just want a class of stock beetles racing...
👌🏾
VERY GOOD VW , BRASIL OK.
Looks like fun.
Household Dog it was fun. 2 would have been better. A heat of 10...🤯
Chassis looks similar to the old tl-01.
How t you break/ get rid of the front power? it feels more natural in RWD form.
Glass Of Milk Studios no center diff will make it more 4wd.
Do you guys actually pay that driver,,, it's a rally car STOP JUMPING IT,,,, Tamiya's plastic bushings and servo savers were never their strong suits. I still love all Tamiya cars, even the madbull. great job thumbs up
RC Mike Klein you never saw a rally car in the air? Stop. 😃
I was trying to get a response and I felt soo bad for the poor beetle, thanks
Dope
Looks good but as you say its mutch you can put finger on.
nice ! subbed you now !👍👍👍
omg just by looking at that suspension this is not a jump toy.. just saying.. no wonder why it broke
nice
please don tortured the polycarbonate body LOL
Looks cheap. Your review was very honest and straight to the point. Waste of money on this car.
Fuck you dude. What brand do you run? Whatever it is, I bet it's garbage shit too. An expensive car doesn't automatically mean it's better, you moron. Follow your pos rc into heavy traffic.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son in that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16
Was there a rally car in that verse?
Racing kills the fun ??? wtf bs is this never heard such a lot of crap.
You only hear it the first time once.
tamiya should be boycotted until they use metal bearings and oil shocks as a minimum ... it cost so tin tiny fraction more to do but their absolute greed as a company is why they dont.
