A lot to see and do there. As someone who loves architecture Prague is a wonderland to walk around for me. It definitely deserves more than one visit.

@41:06 this is the Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí in Czech). One of the most famous squares where all the main Czech demonstrations take place. The building in the distance is the Czech National Museum.
Yes, I would say just as iconic or even more as the famous Heroes' Square in Budapest (on the east side of the Iron Curtain). Very known for much footings from the Prague Spring and Velvet Revolution.
@13:21 this is a Jan Hus monument. Jan Hus was a Czech theologian and philosopher who became a Church reformer and the inspiration of Hussitism, a key predecessor to Protestantism. He was arrested, imprisoned and burned alive by the Catholic Church in Konstanz in Switzerland in 1415. His execution triggered the Husite wars in the Czech lands in 1420 fought between the Hussites and the combined Catholic forces of Holy Roman Emperor. That's why Czechs are the least religious country in the world.
It's also worth to mention that there are no communist monuments in the Czech Republic.
Good point, but Konstanz is in Germany (on the shores of Bodensee, Lake Constance) with a cross to commemorate the spot where Hus was burned; although Swiss border is not far away, of course. Also Czech Republic had some communist monuments in the past but were demolished - like it was one enormous Stalin monument on the Letna Hill overlooking Vltava in Prague, was demolished in 1962 and later replaced by the famous Prague Metronome in 1991.
And as of Czech religion - there were not only Hussite Wars but also the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) was important to turn them away from religion (additionally, this war even started in Prague with the famous Prague Defenestration in the Hradčany Castle) and, of course, communists didn't promote the religion and were encouraging atheism, at least for public employees and teachers. Many monarchs tried to force Czech people to reconvert to Catholicism in the past but were not much successful.
@@Ojstra Half true. Back in the 15th Century of course Germany as a state didn't exists and Konstanz at that time was a part of Duchy of Swabia. But I agree that the location of Jan Hus imprisoment and execution took place right at the border between modern Switzerland and Germany.
Also, my statement was correct. There are currently no communist monuments in the Czech Republic and what was in the past and demolished 30 years ago is not relevant as I was refering to the current status.

I was just in Benesov back in 2023! Its right outside of Prague! What a beautiful SAFE Country! They kept tight control of the border. It reminds me of pictures of London back in the 1950's.

@20:58 if you look at the coblestones bellow your feets you will see 27 crosses. This is the place where Old Town Execution was taking place in 21. June 1621.The Habsburgs won the war against Czech royality and they executed brutally every Czech Royal at that exact place (27 of them). It was one of the most publicly displayed executions at that time and it thrown the Czech lands under the control of the German Habsburg monarchy for over 400 years. This execution was the end of Czech culture , language and state for hundreds of years.
Don't be so severe.. It definitely wasn't the end of Czech culture. It just became pretty challenged.

Hi Gabriel,I’m Czech and thank you for visiting Czechia.I would love to see the eastern part of this magnificent country,there are many hidden gems in that area,region called Moravia.There are castles,reservations,beautiful landscapes with small villages.Lots of historic sites with great food,music and of course the best beer!

You need to check out the German or Austrian alpine towns, like Garmisch, Bertchesgaden or Salzburg. Such great places anytime of year.

Hey Gabriel, when you're in the Czech Republic I would reccomend to visit the border former mining town of Zelezna Ruda/Bayerischer Eisenstein (in English "Ironstone"). There's a train station that was divided in half between Western Germany and Czechoslovakia back in the old days and the Iron Curtain was running right in the middle of it. There's also a nice hiking tour along the border with the remnants of Iron Curtain and lots of hiking opportunities around that very mountaneous area with preserved nature as it was secured and off for public for almost half a century in the 20th Century. You can cross into Bavaria and the hike along the Regen river is absolutely spectacular especially between the towns of Zwiesel and Regen on the German side of the border. The Czech side offers unique ice age lakes and the spring source of the river Vltava that goes through Prague.

I live in Prague and there's one frase that fits I believe: familiarity breeds contempt and also always so many tourists so I hardly venture out to the center.
haha, it is just 5 mins of walk to the sqaure. and it is warm now. as I sit here and watch all the vids from prague on my pc instead. :)
You can put those shoes in the clothes donation box. They are everywhere in Europe. You can also use parcel locker to send your stuff to another European country. Then your things will wait at your new destination.. Usually those parcel lockers can be used for free for a week or so (unfair to people who receive online shopping in them, but sometimes it is ok). I usually send back shopping or clothes I don't need to a parcel locker near my home.

I love Prague, was lucky enough to go 20 years ago. So Mediaeval and historic, but with a quirky sense of humour.

Ahoj! I travelled to Praha 5 times in the Communist times ('70s & '80s). It was not infested with tourists. I took 2 years of Czech so I was able to talk with everyone (however I only spoke English to officials -- did not want to attract the attention of the STB -- secret police.) For a few dollars I got private tours of many closed and special sites. There was no crime and everything was inexpensive. I even ran into Gustav Husak (First Secretary of the Czechoslovak Communist Party) in a restaurant bathroom. Scared the hell out of me! When the wall came down my friends were finally able to visit me without the need of an exit visa.

I can (just about) remember visiting in the early 90s. It was definitely a much more authentic (and cheaper) experience than today, but on the other hand I remember struggling to find anywhere open to eat after 9pm. So swing and roundabouts
Wow what a blast from the past. I too visited another Eastern European Country in the 70's & 80's and you have to be creatively careful when you did something a little sneaky. Like you said prices were extremely cheap in Western currencies from the food, lodging, taxis. Those days were very memorable.

Gabe the Smetana Hall the one with the tim burton poster is pragues Municipal opera House its Prague's most beautiful concert hall,the art nouveau mosaic high up that you liked so much i am sure is by Alphonse Mucha, the Czech painter, illustrator, and graphic artist.who deorated it for free ie he is the artist you said you had never heard of which i must admit did surprise me his art went out of fashion but his poster returned in fashion through out the 1960s 1970s periods ,great video gabe stay warm happy rollin travels

Loving this trip. Prague reminds me of Zurich in how vast it seems, architecture, trams and overall cleanliness. Gabriel, I would never think how much I appreciate your shoe story and explanation., they are rather loud, lol...I can here every step you take. However, with that being said how come you don't have a pair of travel sneakers? So many different brands, they're light weight so they would fit in your luggage without weighing it down. Plus you could switch out from your sandals when the temp drops or it rains.
I bought a perfect pair of shoes when I was back in the US, but I like them a lot and wouldn't want to chuck them. The problem with switching them out is if you're going to continue traveling with them you then have to stuff them into the backpack somewhere, and they take up a lot of space. This way I'll just toss the shoes once I get somewhere warm and have less stuff to carry.
But Zurich is in Switzerland, it's really clean, not just trash moved to back street and eveything works there because it's Switzerland, it has to work and trains can't be delayed there, that happens only here. Or maybe not. 😀

Prague is definately my favorite major city in Europe that I have been to. My first experience in the country was in Jablonec Nad Nisou though, interesting place.

I always bring old shoes that I am planning on getting rid of soon with me on trips. I then just leave them in the hotel room before I travel home. That way I have more room in my luggage for things I bought and want to bring home with me.
That is a good idea. Always end up buying more things to bring home then I planned on.
The statue illustrates "The Metamorphosis" one of my Kafka favorite perfectly. Critics are usually crap.

Glad that you have learned about Mucha (pronounced Muha). . .His art is quite impressive, definitely better than Warhol. Kafka Exhibition is not really good. (is actually fake)The real Museum is on the other side of the river at Lesser Town and it is very niice.. (highly recommend) .

Actually, we are turning into a shithole where nothing is possible and bureaucracy is worse and worse. Poland already overtook us in almost everything, when I visit Poland again, there are new skyscrappers, for the same time, we can build maybe 100 m of bike path. 😀 I know people who are seriously thinking about moving to Poland because this country has no future.

Your opening sequence about your shoes reminded me of an experience while living in Greece. I bought some cheap sneakers made in Albania and they literally disintegrated on a hike in the Peloponnese. Get lost in the Peloponnese.

@@BhutWhut Why, Just because its available in another country? Plzen is an amazing city with rich history. The term Pilsner and style of beer comes from Plzen, The hops used there became world famous, and their natural open air fermentation and water all play a huge role. I would argue that its more balanced than IPA with IBU being lower. Pilsner Urquell is not only a great beer, it's responsible for creating a whole genre, and raising beer quality across the world
Gabe if you do make it to Plzen, you can actually go to Saunas that have private baths with beer in the taps, to bathe in.
@@Nickzz30 I understand the significance of Plzen. My point is that when he's in Czechia he should try beers that aren't readily available elsewhere, there are many great beers in Plzen that aren't sold at every liquor store in the USA

@@BhutWhut Tank Pilsner isn't available in the USA. Bottled Pilsner is made by Coors in the USA. Outside of CR no-one has had real Pilsner. Even the bottles made for export and sold in Europe aren't the same.

I like the Babies climbing the Žižkov Tower or the statue of the suspended Sigmund Freud hanging on a pole in Husova Street,as seen at the end of the video,called Hangman /Viselec/It would definitely be an idea for the next eventual visit😊

The relationship of Warhol to Dali is interesting and probably why they’re being exhibited together. I always thought meh of Warhol til I saw his works in person.

Hi Gabriel, the fascinating city of Prague has many layers to it a beautiful blend of the modern and the past. It was a very eye-opening experience for me as you pan the camera around the city regardless of whether getting lost or not had a profound effect. It is so interesting that Franz Kafka's writing has much to do with the existential movement many ideas funnel down to other writers creating a wealth of creative thinkers and seekers of the truth.
What happened to the pair of shoes you bought in Azerbaijan?
I think they're in my storage space in Portland, unless I tossed them. They were hurting my feet a little, so might have decided to chuck them at some point.

His parents were of Czech origin.
@@witlof5492 , actually Rusyn (Ruthenian, Lemko) from Miko in today's northeastern Slovakia that was later part of Czechoslovakia and from 1993 part of Slovakia. His father emigrated to the USA in 1914 (from Austria-Hungary) and his mother in 1921 (from Czechoslovakia).
Gabe a good info for you… that Ham shack is a scam… they sell you Ham by the Ounce so it is put on a scale before you buy… a simple ham sandwich will cost you up to 30 dollars.. beware…

You might be thinking of when I arrived in Sofia, Bulgaria in winter. That could be where I bought them.
