How to Install Long Forks on Honda Shadow Build

  • Let me walk you through the process of installing long (extended) forks on your Honda Shadow!
    This Video can also be used as a reference for replacing fork seals and fork oil.
    Tool List:
    - 8MM Allen Wrench
    - 24MM Allen Socket (with every extension you can find, apx. 18")
    - Standard Screw Driver
    - Fork Removal Tool
    - 1 1/2" PVC - apx. 2'
    - Ratchet
    - Allen to remove forks pinch bolts
    - Allen to remove wheel
    - Allen to remove pinch bolts on clamps
    - Sockets to remove caliper

    I watched multiple videos that did not mention the "oil lock piece" at the base of the fork. I have been searching for how this goes back together, even though it really goes back only one way. But you confirmed it.

    Zip tie to hang up caliper, check. Also old brake pad, piece of wood between the pads because there WILL be a 'friend' that can't resist pulling on the brake lever whilst it's off the bike!!

    Brilliant video man I have a 05 vlx600 single carb model and I’ve got a set of 8” over tubes to extend my front end they are Harley sportster tubes though? Will they still work? as I did some research and found they are the same diameter both as the shadow forks

    Good breakdown of how to do this. I wonder if its easier to just buy new ones. More expensive but if you don't have grave space or time then buying new o as direct from Honda may be my way to go. My 02 Shadow so far seems good but I can see having to do this in a year or so.

As for harbor Freight torque wrenches. At my last job, we had to have our tools checked for accuracy in the quality department. I brought my Harbor Freight torque wrench, that I have at home, in to have it tested. It was dead on accurate.

    the fork spacer you installed seems to be the close to the exact length of the stock fork spacers. since you installed 6over tubes don’t you need to have a fork spacer that is 6 inches over the stock spacer in order to get the proper preload on the spring and similar rebound and compression as stock?

      I got around that by putting my forks back in the triple tree, with the springs still inside and caps on, letting the triple tree hold the fork as i removed the bottom bolt in the dampener.
      The spring holds everything inside under pressure so the bolt has something to be removed from otherwise it just turns everything in there.

    Well i made that 24mm tool and tried to take my fork apart. No way! That nut i tig welded onto each end of the rod is 24 mm but it fits into nothing down inside the fork. Any idea why?

    TIP: I you are having trouble installing that larger metal bushing, use your PVC and the old metal bushing to pound it in.
    If tried it the way in the video and it didn't go in. I also may have been doing something wrong along the way. I hope this helps someone.

    During assembly you said to put the tighter wound end of the spring down. But the service manul says to put the tapered end up. My question is is the tightly wound end of the spring considered there tapped end or does some springs have a smaller diameter on one end

      I should add, the reason I ask is because while doing my fork seals on the shadow I just got. One fork spring had the tight end up and the other had the tight end of the spring down

      I would already have a machined, factory part. While it is inexpensive, I don't have any PVC, in the proper I.D. or O. D. readily available . Lastly, I am not a mechanic. I was asking a legitimate question, however I should have been more specific. What, if any, is the advantage of using PVC as opposed to factory fitted tubing ?
