    * Lara Fabian (Lara Sophie Katy Crokaert) *1970, is a fantastic Canadian-Belgian singer, songwriter, musician, actress and producer. She is Belgian but also has Italian roots (her mother is from Sicily). She grew up in both countries and therefore speaks both French and Italian as her mother tongue. She was classically trained in singing, piano and song composition for 10 years (from 8 to 18) at the Brussels Royal Conservatory.
To this day she has singing lessons and trains several times a week. She started her career in Canada in the early 1990s. She now lives in Montreal and also has Canadian citizenship. She is fluent in 4 languages (French, Italian, English, Spanish) and has sung in a total of 12 languages. She has sold over 20 million records worldwide as of September 2017 and is one of the best-selling Belgian artists of all time.
In 2000, Lara launched her triumphal procession in the US, but a falling out with Sony over her artistic direction and the will of Celine Dion's management to block her path to the US thwarted that plan.
She therefore focused on Europe again and had great success there, expanding her reach to Eastern Europe and Asia where she became an absolute superstar through her many years of collaboration with Igor Krutoy. She's also a star in Brazilia.
Many of their songs are now classics and are covered by other singing legends: Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban...
The US is now rediscovering her through her covers of Lara Fabian songs.
She is Dimash's idol. He has covered many of their songs. She also wrote the lyrics to his song 'Your Love'. and they shared the stage and performed Ti Amo Cosi (composed by Igor Krutoy) along with Aida Garafulina: Ti Amo Cosi - czcams.com/video/XaQFfqC3lnU/video.html

“Je suis Malade”, now a french classic, was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973.
This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …).
When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and compose the music in a couple of hours.
The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes.
Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad.
But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s.
At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version. She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet. They became good friends.
Lara has made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power and Serge Lama adopted these in his later interpretations.
The 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal)
    czcams.com/video/eHSyk4SGtuY/video.html
is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries.
The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella.
Lara is used to perform the song very differently in each of her tour and for instance this 2003 version is even more dramatic

She could've continued her career there if she was a sold and if she agreed on making trashy music. She quit and they turn her down. She would never ever sell her soul. Do you know "No Big Deal", from "Wonderful Life" album? That song is about that!

She is a legend in many countries, known to be in the same vocal tier as Mariah, Whitney or Celine and adding on top of that 2nd-to-none acting, story telling and emotions conveying skills plus language mastership (she writes songs in 4 languages and has sung in 12).
She is also nicknamed in the music industry as "The Ring" or "The Queen of Resonance".
She is Dimash’s idol ( he covered several of her songs, sang with her and she wrote a song for him).
She is also an inspiration for many other vocalists and many made covers, including Morissette that you mentionned.

@@TielleBaker she has been classically trained for more than 10 years and is a lyrical soprano. She only moved away from opera because she is first and foremost a songwriter.
Her preferred genre is love ballads but she also has covered rock, opera, rock opera, pop, blues, jazz, musical, …
she was #1 in the US dance charts for more than 1 year with “I will love again”.
So it is hard to restrict her to a single style.

    More information on Lara Fabian:
Lara is recognized as one of the best vocalist ever seen on earth and all professionals list her in the top vocalist tier with Barbra, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Lisa Fischer, ....
In my personal opinion, she is even the best.
There are a few vocal characteristics that are her signature: her famous resonance for instance that allows her to sing acapella without mic in venues with 8,000 attendees. Her nickname in the singing world is "the ring" due to this. I would also list her amazing phrasing, breath management and her pleasant tone even when belting in her upper register.
So she is one of the best vocalist ever, but on top of that, she adds a few things that make her an absolute package with no equivalence:
    • she speaks 2 languages natively (french, italian), and 2 others fluently (english, spanish), can speak a bit of dutch (and sicilian), and understand quite well russian and portuguese. She has sung in 12 languages in total
    • she is an amazing songwriter and wrote lyrics for most her songs, in the 4 languages she speaks fluently. She often co-composes the music with the composer.
    • she acts and performs on stage as nobody else, she colors and reveals the meaning of every single word in the songs, and her ability to emote, to draw you in is second to none
    • she is the sweetest soul on earth, very humble, down to earth and benevolent. She likes to meet others, and her fans are always pleasantly surprised when this happens.
A quick background on her and her career:
She is belgian, her father is flemish, but also has italian roots (her mother is from sicilia) and American roots ( her grandfather is from Detroit). She was raised in sicilia first then in Belgium so she speaks both italian and french as native languages.
She has been classically trained on vocal, piano and songs composition for 10 years ( from 8 to 18) in the Brussels Royal Conservatory.
She is still having vocal lessons and training several times a week today.
She started her career in Canada in the early 90s, more precisely in Quebec, the french-speaking part of Canada.
She now lives in Montreal and has also Canadian citizenship
She became very famous there and then conquered France in 1996/1997 (she topped charts there and some of her songs such as "Je t'aime" or "Tout" became classics of the french music).
In 2000, she was about to penetrate the US Market, with a lot of media initial interest. Her first english song (I will love again), a pop dance song, stayed number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart for 58 weeks in a row and number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her Album ("Lara Fabian") was about to become a massive hit, and the concert "From Lara With Love" was recorded to be broadcasted everywhere in the US.
This concert is legendary and the song you just reviewed is from this concert.
But a dispute with Sony on artistry directions, and the will from Celine Dion's staff to block her progress in the US, completely broke this plan.
She thus refocused back on Europe and made huge success there, extending her reach to Eastern Europe and Central Asia where she became an absolute superstar through her collaboration with Igor Krutoy during several years. She is absolutely massive in Russia for instance.
She is also a star in Brazil as her song "Love By Grace", used as the soundtrack for a very famous soap opera, topped the charts for months and become a recurrent in the local singing contests since then.
Many of her songs became classics and were covered by the other singing legends: Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban, …
With her success in Europe, Brazil and part of Asia, she is the inspiration of the new generation of vocalists: most of them are coming from there.
Thru their covers of Lara Fabian songs, USA and many other countries are now rediscovering her.
    She is Dimash's idol:
I’ve read somewhere that, when he was a child, he was listening her songs every night to get asleep.
He covered many of her songs, most of these were composed by Igor Krutoy and written by by Lara.
Out of my mind I can list:
    ○ Adagio (She wrote it and is the original performer),
    ○ Mademoiselle Hyde (she wrote it and is the original performer),
    ○ Love of Tired Swans (she wrote the song in French under the title "Je t'aime encore" and was the original performer of the french then the russian versions, Dimash covered the russian version)
    ○ Ascolta La Voce / Vocalize (this was a pure vocalization and she was the original performer, then lyrics were added for Dimash and it was rebranded as "Know")
She also wrote the lyrics of Dimash's song "Your Love".
And she covered "Love is like a dream" before him (song from Igor Krutoy originally performed by Alla Pugacheva).
Finally, they also performed "Ti Amo Cosi" together, in trio with Aida Garafulina: this is a song that she performed originally with Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Sumi Jo then again later with Dmitri and Alina Yarovaya, before this new trio with Dimash and Aida.
Dimash is now also working with Igor Krutoy: Igor and Dimash connected after his Adagio cover, also endorsed by Lara.
Igor came back from retirement and composed severals songs for him after it.
Many other top vocalists from the current generation covered her songs, some have Lara as a role model and big inspiration:
    ○ Floor Jansen (Adagio),
    ○ Polina Gagarina (Adagio, Je t’aime),
    ○ Diana Ankudinova (Tomorrow is a lie, Ascolta la Voce),
    ○ Morissette Amon (Broken Vow),
    ○ Gabriel Henrique (Love by Grace),
    ○ Cakra Khan (Broken Vow),
    ○ Katrina Velarde (Broken Vow),
    ○ Regine Velasquez (Broken Vow),
    ○ Giulia Falcone (Adagio, Caruso, Je suis malade, Je t'aime),
    ○ Forestella (Je suis Malade),
    ○ Almira (from 4th Impact band) (Broken Vow),
    ○ Julie Anne san Jose (Adagio, Broken Vow),
    ○ Rimar ( Adagio, Broken Vow, Know),
    ○ Il Divo (Adagio)
    ○ Daria Bentsa (I guess I loved you),
    ○ Sarah Geronimo (Broken Vow)
    ○ Laura Bretan ( Adagio, Caruso),
    ○ Jackie Evancho (Je t’aime, Caruso and Broken Vow, BV rewritten as « Imaginer » by Lara for Jackie),
    ○ Amir (Je t’aime),
    ○ Vitas (Adagio)
    ○ Anastasia Luna (Adagio),
    ○ Evgenia Fanfara (Adagio),
    ○ Choi Sung Hoon (Je suis malade),
    ○ Soprano Turetsky band (Adagio)
    ○ Majda Roumi (Adagio),
    ○ Harrison Craig (Broken Vow),
    ○ Petra Berger (Adagio, Broken Vow),
    ○ Katerina Maslova (Je t’aime, I guess I loved you)
    ○ ....
NB: Lara did cover Caruso , Je suis malade, and Love by grace, these are not her originals, but I mention these here as the related artists were attracted to cover it again after listening to Lara’s version.
Today, Lara still has an amazing voice and tone and can still reach the 5th octave with resonance ; she still offers these emotive renditions that are her unique signature.
In June 2022, she kicked off a WW tour and stunned her fans once again with 5 magical concerts in Canada. She completed the europe part in September/October and I attended a concert from this tour. It was packed and she was again spectacular.
Sorry if I was long, but I hope this gives some context on Lara.

Adagio is amazing but you must select a live version (she needs an audience to connect to in order to pour out all her emotions) and here is the best version: czcams.com/video/bqoS-KOLV_4/video.html
As you are in theater world, let me tell you Lara is the best emotions conveying and story telling performer on the vocalist world.
She is also an actress and she just had an amazing role in a canadian (quebec) movie last year.
In terms of acting/singing combo performances, I recommend:
      - Yentl medley (Papa can you hear me & Piece of Sky, chained live) as a tribute to her idol Barbra Streisand: aka "Lara in broadway mode" czcams.com/video/zW8lalHMwxk/video.html
      - Calling you, cover of Jevetta Steele: czcams.com/video/KkfXEb_VyLM/video.html
      - Requiem pour un fou, duet with french legend Johnny Hallyday, epic bonnie&clyde-like performancebunder the rain: czcams.com/video/zR1rkt_0biA/video.html
      - another version of Je suis malade, even more dramatic, more theatrical, with even more acting skills exposed and a stunning unforgettable end:

She speaks 10 languages. Perfect English. She actually sat down and explained this song and it was like listening to someone from the Midwest. Perfect, unbroken English. She loves to sing in French. It's a romance language so everything sounds much more dramatic. Literally singing I am sick in English wouldn't sound nearly as good. Why are Americans the only people who don't learn to speak at least one other language? We just don't and I don't understand that.

Hi Tielle! Did a check of your videos to date and hoping you can get to Floor Jansen sometime in the future. She has received a number of rave reviews from vocal coaches elsewhere. A few notes to keep in mind: 1) Floor's strength is the ability to switch back and forth from high head-voice operatic to mid to chest and belting, also "some" semi-growling, but not what professional singers call "fry". So it is difficult to review Floor because very few songs combine all these different TYPES of singing in one song -- you would really have to listen to three or four songs to really get an idea of what she can do. That is why "Ghost Love Score" is so popular and has so many reviews -- it comes the closest to showcasing a number of different TYPES of styles. It is also why Floor did so well on the "Beste Zangers" show. The purpose of their show was to host one "style" each week. So Floor sang opera the 1st week ("Vilja Lied"), a Spanish belting song the next week ("Que Si Siente"), a U.S. folk song another week ("I Don't Know a Think About Love"), a Dutch belting song the next week ("Mama"), a U.S. commercial POP song the next week (A cover of Lady GaGa's "Shallow"), topped off with her rendition of musical theater ("Phantom of the Opera") on the final week. (For her cover of Lady GaGa's "Shallow", for example, vocal coach Ken Tamplin of "Ken Tamplin Music Academy", with 1.14 million subscribers, said: "Well I'm sorry, Lady GaGa, but, she smoked ya' ". This Beste Zangers song has six million views to date).
Odd bits: Floor speaks five languages: English (native); Dutch (native), Finnish (to work with Nightwish, who are a Finnish band); Swedish (she has lived in Sweden for many years with her husband and small daughter); and German (which she brushed up on recently to participate in the German-language show "Sing Meinen Song", the German equivalent to "Beste Zangers"). Tidbit # 2: Floor announced just yesterday that she is pregnant with her 2nd child. We are all rooting for Floor (as I'm sure you will be too), as Floor turned 42 on Feb. 21, 2023, so that is getting a little late for pregnancy? But we all cheer for her! And # 3: diagnosed with breast cancer in Oct. 2022; surgery to remove a small tumor (successful) November 2022; back on the road touring December 2022, and hospital checkup Jan. 2023. But we believe everything is supposed to be OK now!
Look forward to your further reviews!! ... T.C.

Dimash is exactly half Laura's age, and he began studying her and idolizing her as a teenager. The finally met and performed in a trio with Russian opera star Aida Garifullina when Dimash was 25. "Ti Amo Cosi" is the song they sing. Among Lara's songs "Adagio"
    "Broken Vow"

I know reactors are currently espousing the recent Nightwish version of "Phantom" with Floor and Henk, but for Tielle I would recommend the Beste Zangers version with Floor and Henk Poort at czcams.com/video/plCScjvDOJM/video.html (20 million views as of today). With the greatest of respect, with Tielle's background, I wonder if she is _already aware_ of Henk, who sang the male lead in "Phantom" in Europe for many years? Or if Tielle is aware of the annual Dutch TV show "Beste Zangers"? However, if not, a key factor is that the _Beste Zangers_ show used a professional sound stage designed to maximize the singers voice (that's the purpose of the show), so the sound quality is a bit better than the recent Nightwish version. As for male leads, I know a lot of people like Marko's rendition, even professional singing coaches, but personally I prefer the classical vocalization that Henk brings. As for Floor, I am posting my comments about her in a separate entry for Tielle. But certainly agree with your suggestion!

In many reactions I have seen, there are 3 versions of the song that vocal coaches go back and for comparison: Lara's, Dimash's and Floor's. Everyone has their favorite. Some feel Floor's is best. Apparently the version with Dimash depends partly on which performance and the quality of the recording, but clearly he is not to be underestimated. Floor's version was done at home during Covid, but the sound quality came out very well (she's using very expensive equipment). The one critique I have is that you ended the video too soon. The part you missed is Lara shedding the character and returning to the present, and the shock on her face as she recognizes the applause. As a father and a hopeless romantic, all I want to do is give her a big hug and tell her that not all men are jerks. Now, the writer of this song was a Frenchman and it was written a fairly long time ago, but I believe she does a masterful job in telling the story and making us all feel it.
