- Follow the epic journey of dog domestication and see what science says about dogs’ love. (Aired February 12, 2020 on PBS)
Official Website: to.pbs.org/45Uzrlw | #novapbs
Dogs have long been dependable companions by our sides. But it wasn’t always that way, and a look at their closest living relative, the wolf, makes it clear why. Research into dog domestication and intelligence offers clues into what the human-dog relationship is all about. And analyzing dogs’ brain activity and genes may even help answer the question of whether dogs are in it for the food-or if they really love us.

When I feed my dog, he gets excited. But if I put down his bowl and then ask him if he'd like a belly rub first, he always rolls over on his back and chooses belly rubs over his food. He loves his walks, but last winter when I was ill, my husband couldn't get him to leave me long enough to take a walk. He was determined to stay by my side, and nothing could lure him away from me, not food, not play, not a walk. He would even follow me into my bathroom. There is absolutely no way that I doubt that he loves me, and I believe that he knows that I love him too. I never want to live without a dog. I just wish that they lived longer!
That's right. You can't see love on an MRI or CAT Scan Machine
Dogs certainly love their humans. lol I don’t even need an mri scan to figure that out.
I heard the spirit of your dog returns to u:)
And /or maybe they have short lives so we can have Many in our lives.
I believe all those things too. I'm glad they did the science to demonstrate those things. Science is always good. But I didn't need the science to know those things. I know my dog loves me. I know he he doesn't like it when I'm stressed and that he loves my approval. I'm sure he even knows things about us that we're not even aware of.
I had a staffordshire terrier that alerted me to a roommate that was behind a closed bedroom door having a diabetic seizure. He actually jumped up on the door pushing it open exposing the guy on the floor. We called 911. Paramedics said he would have gone into a coma had the dog not alerted us.
Wow- awesome.
Oh my! So so amazing! He saved her life!!
I loved my Staffie!❤
Yes, without any training even. Our Jack Russell's will alert my wife or whoever is there that an Epileptic siezure is happening. Apparently they go nutz and will keep trying to lead her into whatever room I'm in. Usually not but can be quite dangerous with breathing, blood-pressure/heart probs, or environment danger like water in a shower/bath/pool so quick assessment of such is critical. Sixth sense of their's can even tell when ones about to happen when it's noticed as being a warning. And they'll stay with me until recovered. Scared the hell out of my wife and any past girlfriend who had the pleasure of seeing it for the 1st time but the dogs definitely helped calm them. Always gonna have one, probably two is more likely.
Bless that pup! ♥️🐾♥️
I can't imagine my life without one or more dogs in it. From the time I was 25, Splice (13), Cody (12), Dozer (12), Digger (13), Rex (6), Opus(15), Starlight (13), Rascal (17), Pips (16), Chica (currently 11) and Tofu (currently 8). Chica and Tofu are still with me as I push 70. And btw....with the exception of Splice, they have all been shelter adoptions. And when I die, my ashes will be mixed with theirs for eternity.
My dog Chonq is the Doggi Lama. He loves everyone and everything, and enjoys every day and whatever it brings his way.
Good for you! Our dogs have also come from local shelters, and have been wonderful. I always encourage folks to adopt from a shelter. These animals deserve loving homes. I also love your idea to mix your ashes with your dogs. That's just lovely.
This is the first time I’ve come across someone with the same wish for final arrangement. I too have told everyone that I want my ashes mixed with those of my dogs and cats before burial. Also, every one I’ve ever had throughout my life were shelter rescues, or rescued by myself, found dumped in severely inhospitable environments. And I’ll be 70 this year. I keep all my babies, no matter what, for as long as they live.
It’s nice to find another soul with the same energy.
@@lauriegentry7764 Bless you and all your fur babies. Guess we will both need extra-large urns. :)
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
We honestly do not deserve the unconditional love and loyalty of dogs.
I 100% agree! We don’t deserve such amazing goodness! Dogs are such a wonderful gift!!…❤
Speak for yourself
@@geronimotanto2229 , Maybe they have suck self-loathing, they feel they don't deserve a dogs love & friendship. We all seen it, they changed hardened murdering criminals. Maybe if they opened their heart they too could experience, the love, affection & devotion dogs share with people. I've always trusted dogs more than any people & probably always will. Why I tell women who own dogs, to always trust them when they for some unknown reason, take a instant dislike for a person, they sense the vile & evilness of a person that can be hidden from us, but Not with dogs !
Like honesty bro like literally bro wow bro I'm so cool because I hate myself and humanity bro I'm so uniquely rebellious bro
Humans bred this species to have the traits they possess, so while not every human deserves such loyalty, the human race certainly does.
The inmates are doing such a great job with their dogs. I know they're proud of their work. Congratulations, gentlemen.
First thought you were referring to the fox inmates...
Beautiful!! I was a teacher at a State Prison. The dogs they trained healed those men's lives. It was utterly magnificent. So remarkable.
Finally, a feel-good piece in this sea of strife. Thanks, NOVA. 🐶
Oh you must go adopt a dog!! Don't be alone!! My little dog is my reason for living!
Coming soon from NOVA: "How dogs with a certain genetic mutation are influencing left-wing politicians to enthusiastically destroy the country through blatantly unconstitutional policies".
The foxes in tiny cages wasn't a feel good piece.
Right! Is it any wonder society is coming apart at the seems when... everywhere you turn someone is outraged about something. It the politicians and elite ruling class. They might be evil but they ain't stupid. Keeping us angry and hating each other protects them...from getting strung up in the streets! Don't let them do it!!! Just like dog breeds might look different and have different traits...under it all they, like us, are pretty much the same. We are so much more alike..than different! Just look at how many humans for different cultures and ethnicities...love dogs! And...they love us....there is no question in my mind about that. Dogs love!!!!
Oh.. I've said many times that I love dogs more than humans. People laugh...think I'm kidding. Nope... Pure unconditional love! You not only get back what you give a dog...and when more. The breeds I've raised...will protect a baby and give its life to protect it without hesitation. Dogs love us, love working for us, with us or...just share a warm spot on the porch. To me...near perfect souls! 😊
I heard this once and goes like this. Dear Lord help me become the person my dog thinks I am.
I love this!! Thank you.
The dog doesn't think you believe in God
I had some friends that had a wolf. You could definitely tell it was not a dog. Just the feeling I got when I was around it. Like no matter how domesticated it is, you could feel it was a wild animal. 😮
The Fox experient seems so cruel. Those tiny cages are horrific.
Totally agree. Those women should try a cage themselves
I thought the same thing. I was hoping they would explain that. The fact they are studying multi-generational tests means those animals are caged and controlled all their lives,, just so we can confirm what we pretty much already know?? We can do better than this. I'm hoping I misunderstood...
1000% agree, I am just wondering after all the conclusions or knowledge they can come up with, does it make us better human?
I read about this experiment years ago. I hope those caged facilities are history now. They were pretty awful. No animal deserves to live in a small, empty cage.
It's devastating
The inmates found love. Love changes a human and the result is always good. My dog has changed my depression so much. I didn't want a dog. Caring for a dog was just going to be another responsibility for me. But Bear has given me and my family so much joy. Thank you Bear. We love you.
Tis video has encouraged me to praise my dog even more than I already do. She is such a GOOD GIRL!
Same. Seeing that they prefer love & attention over food… that proved what I’ve always thought, they are better than most human beings ❤
Am I the only one that wishes we could push the like button more than once? Always trust a dog when they don't like a person and never trust a person that doesn't like a dog. Truer words have never been spoken. Imho
Oh yeah, as always.... excellent work NOVA.
Weird opinion. Your dog could watch you get killed than forget about it the next day, while being loyal to your murderer if they have food.
@@chrisreynolds35 I must respectfully disagree. The only time that might actually happen is if the dog is literally starving to death and/or the r word we aren't allowed to use anymore. I have seen dogs stand vigil at their owner's graves for over a week after the owner died. So sure, ur view could be possible if the owner is a complete dick to other ppl or their own dog or the dog is a complete dumbass.
It is so sad to see foxes being caged in such a small enclosure they can barely spread out.
yea wtf
My thoughts exactly, even with their warm coats, no real shelter, confined, a wire raised floor, just disgusting.
My thoughts Exactly! And then scientists r like ‘oh the animal is angry’
They have come to realize learned behavior and it only took them 60 years. Think of that. And we think we are smart. I guess we are as they have enshrined a long term job doing a dumb job. 😂😂😂😂
I am going through mourning my best friend of 12 years. On 9/22 I had to put her down. I miss her so much! It came unexpected. But I let her go bc I love her so much. I knew she was in love with me right up to the end. She trusted me completely and there were very few days we were ever apart. It still feels unreal. She used to wake me up with a bark in the mornings occasionally when she decided it's time to rise and shine mom. For 3 days in a row she barked at me to wake up after she was gone. Their love for their human comes without judgement. No human does that.
I'm so sorry. I hope one day soon you can find love with another dog. Expect that it won't be the same, but it will be just as powerful.
We just had to put down our rescue Pyre of 8 years. She was a good girl!
@@mcblaze1968 I feel your pain and I'm sorry for your loss
Years ago my recently departed dog woke me by snuffling around my head. Maybe we're both crazy.
So many shelter dogs desperately need somebody like you all in this thread. PLEASE give it a thought.
We are not at all crazy. What we are is experienced in the realm beyond our five senses. I have many stories I could tell you about trust me you are not weird etcetera it's very normal unfortunately most people don't see it because they're too obsessed with their five senses.
When my family went on a two week vacation we didn’t take our Border Collie with us. My uncle staid in our home to take care of her. She kne him well as he lived with us before he got married. We were gone about a week when he came to where we were with Sugar, because she wouldn’t eat. When he was about a mile away she got fidgety and barking. She did that till she was once again with us. We kept her with us and learned she loved camping.
What makes loving pets so hard is the day they leave before you.
Dogs are the best people.
My cat came in the room and yelled at me. I went downstairs and the door was left open.
Cats are heaven sent!
They are born wanting to love us. I think WE are born needing to love them.
Absolutely!
God does all things for His Glory. And He Created all things for His Glory. And His pure LOVE is just waiting to come out of humans & animals on each other. Every person & animal we love on earth is waiting for us all in God's Paradise, our Home called Heaven. A perfect Place of GOD'S LOVE! ❤️
Thanks Nova 👍
Dogs need companions just as much as humans do. I’m a disabled vet that got into saving, fostering ,disabled or hard luck dogs that needed long term recovery to find furever home. Every one of my dogs has helped me though my own recovery. The only sneaky thing dogs hide is that they understand us better than we give them credit.
We dont need an MRI to know that dogs actually love us. Just own one. Yes, food helps
ABSOLUTELY!!!! POSITIVELY!!!!
Guess that should have been pawsatvely...or something like that!
I love dogs the way dogs love people.
Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. (Inside a dog, it's too dark to read.)
bobbybob, you're weird.
Ho,Ho!
One more thing that proves affection vs food, if i yell or speakmin a mean tone of voice my dog get upset, lowers head, shies away and tail between legs. If i speak in a positive low tone approving voice he come to me straight away, wagging tail and seemingly smiling.
They definitely Smile
Dogs are pack animals. We are their pack. They want to be with us because we are their pack mates , family and more!
Aloha...we have 4 quite varied rescue dogs right now, two hounds and two wolves...I grew up with dogs...I am not their feeder, my wife is...I do fill their water when needed...I stay aloof , yet they all love me...their sense of their territory, especially the wolves...many square miles...they roam free on our 10 acre farm yet love to explore when they get out of the gate...they have become a pack and howl together numerous times per day...they bark at cruise ships miles away and occasional helicopters, very protective...gentle dogs...
I've spent my life with a dog or often dogs as constant companions, even in war. The bond is both ways.
I was a Sentry Dog MP in Vietnam. Our task was to secure a base or territory once taken by others (near Cambodia, one wasn't sure if the base was all that 'taken'). We used German Shepherds for the most part the same as 'point' or patrol dogs (and sometimes we did both duties). We each took turns doing 'Dog KP'...feeding and cleaning up after the dogs...gradually learning each dog's personality. One of us had a 50-50 German Shepherd + Wolf. That dog's personality was 'cold.' All the dogs were 'one man dogs' (that much comes through from wolves in a German Shepherd) but with enough persuasion, one could always 'get in' on any of them...except the part wolf. (Get in - inside the limits of the stake out chain without being mauled to say unkink a chain or put a blanket back on the dog...face to muzzle on that dog). The wolf-dog would just stare at you and wait his chance.
I've had only German Shepherds for some years now,. I had Huskies before that and they are not loyal as the Shepherds are. I've found that Shepherds have problems with their hips once they get older but I do love that breed.
@@grantsmythe8625 problems with the hips... Indeed. My Army dog would climb the ladder in the exercise yard... And jump down on me with his front paws straddling my neck and hang there a second... Embarrassing. The sergeant would always shout at me. I finally figured out it was hip displasia and it hurt to jump to the ground.
@@terryrogers6232 Yes, I've heard about hip displasia being a characteristic of the German Shepherd breed and how they adapt their behavior to deal with it. Best dogs I've ever had were German Shepherds. I love 'em.
Hey man thanks for your service, by the way. Thanks to you and to you Army Canine Buddy.
I just lost my beloved Bella on 10/15/23 after losing oral cancer.. she’s was a loyal companion for the past 12 years.. see you in paradise with Jackie very soon
There was never a question in my mind if my dogs loved me. Dogs believe actions speak louder than words. They are all about the nonverbal behavior. As humans we get confused and think that words speak louder than actions (which is why it is easy to gaslight us.). Dogs know to believe the actions, humans fool themselves. Dogs may not be smarter than us, but I do believe they are often wiser.
Dogs are so happy to see you all the time because one human day is a week to our fury friends , they make the most of there shorter lives
There are so many instances of people even the homeless that have animals that love them that help them
I've thought for a long time that dogs are the smartest creatures on the entire planet, surpassing even humans. They have US trained to go out and work our tails off and take care of them. All they have to do is look cute and snuggle up to us and we're putty in their hands...er...paws.
Don’t see dogs performing heart surgeries. Dogs are just as dumb as a pig
5:04 OMG!!! SHE'S WEARING A HAPPY HOODY !!😂
I worry about those foxes being kept in tiny cages like that. Especially the ones specifically bred to not like people I can't imagine how stressful that must be for those foxes.
Dogs love us in spite of our shortcomings, in spite of our social or intellectual standing. I think the 'discovery' that dogs love is interesting because ultimately we put that there. Selective breeding for the 'most friendliest' is going to create that result. How lucky we humans are for getting to live in their world.
Dogs are angels on earth. The best beings ever.
For a family, it seems to me, that a cat and a dog are the best family members, understanding and important members of family. Thanks for the detailed story about dogs.
I couldn't agree more.
This is a good film.
Dogs--the greatest species in the universe.
My best good boys and girls include my therapy dog named Nova! My dogs add such happiness to my life and the lives of people they meet during therapy. I’m so grateful for them.
I was concerned for the foxes. Some of them were so sweet.
I had to skip past that part. It was so sad to see those foxes pacing in their small cages.
Beautiful, thanks for a great show!
Man’s best friend. We have a shared story. It always blows my mind how dogs derive happiness from making us happy or how deeply invested they are in our overall wellbeing.
Who’s a good Nova? 😃
God bless Callie and her parents. 😊
Yeah, she truly is unique. Her wholesomeness instantly made my heart melt. 😊 God bless her and her fam!
I always joked by telling my German Shepard, Candy, that she only likes me cuz of food. She doesn't get along with others though. Great Docu PBS Nova.
If only all people had more of the love genes.
My Dog Seamus knew when I was having a tough time at work and at home, I recall going into the park basement, and putting my head in my hands; Seamus always came to me and put his nose under my hand and he MADE me pet him, he was such a good friend to me! I wish he could have lived longer. I was so proud of my 2 children, who wanted to pet him when we had to put him to sleep (due only to his having pain, we saved him from that.)
"Do Dogs Love Us or Do They Just Want Food?" Answer: Yes.
Anyone who has to ask this question has never had a dog.😊
Absolutely fantastic program!!!
Thanks Francis!
47:52 Oh my goodness, What a sweet young lady🥹 God bless you Callie ❤️😝
I just love reading these comments from fellow dog lovers! I have a doggy, too and we love each other very much. His name is Joey and he’s an absolute delight!
Our family had another dog when my brother and I were growing up. I left for a school event early one Saturday morning and had a headache. Mom, Kevin, and our dog, Jenny, were asleep. When I got back, Mom and Kevin told me they had been to the hospital, but they were all right. Jenny had woken them up and Kevin discovered they were being poisoned by carbon monoxide. If it weren’t for Jenny, I would’ve come home to a dead Mom, brother and dog! They all lived long after that! ❤
I wish they had included a section on therapy dogs, but still a great documentary.
Humans could take notes from dogs in love and friendship!
My late friend raised wolves. He took me n his barn where the huge wolf had a chicken and a momma cat n 5 kittens on his back and would walk around the barn giving them rides they all loced each other.
.y late wealthy uncle would get angry if u called it a dog. He said it is either an animal or a canine a dog is a no count human . A canine is honest loves u unconditionally if they like u they'll wag their tail n if they r close enuf lick your hand. If they don't like u they'll growl n if close enuf bite u the only exceptiona to the rule is if they're diseased then for humanitarian purposes should b destroyed. If they love u enuf they'll give their life for u which they've done many times.
Wolves have better morals they mate for life where as a dog will mate w anyone
I love dogs. ❤❤❤
My life had been divided into two almost equal halves: BD= Before Dogs, and AD or WD = after orwith Dogs.I have no doubt whatsoever that my BD years were wonderful, almost enchanted, my AD/WD have been filled with far greater contentment, growth, warmth, and enchantment. I cannot see living without dogs and being happy even tomorrow I'd win $10 million. For context, I'll point out that , in my AD/WD years I've often lived from paycheck to paycheck. I know of no greaterj oy than being and loving dogs. Thanks PBS/Nova for a terrific segment.
Could've saved the misery of a bunch of caged foxes with the most easily predictable experiment ever
Started watching this last night and had to finish it this morning before I can do anything else.
Simply put, dog rock. And they help us as much as we help them
I think evolution also selected for cooperation and innate understanding, and this effectively means that humans and dogs share at least some common understanding at an instinctual level
I have loved dogs forever. Now I KNOW WHY!
Dogs are just so great. Mans best friend. We simply are better together.
I enjoyed this show very much!!
This was an awesome episode. It reminded me how David Letterman would have diving dogs on his show ever year. I loved the segment.
I do not feel comfortable to see wild animals kept in cages.😮😟
Dont u know its very sad for that inmate and that dog when their training is finished and they seperate them.
Deeply so. But I taught at one of those prisons. Those dogs worked miracles on those men. It was a win-win situation. I was very deeply impressed.
Doggos are the bestest.
😊❤❤❤👍🐺🐕 My dog and I enjoyed this program.
Yeah dog's are Gods gift😊
The first human into orbit around the Earth was Yuri Gagarin but before him it was her, a female dog named Laika.
So what did those two scientists do to get a job where you have to put your hands in the cages of MANY wild animals who are trying to bite them?
We had a cat that appeared to know each time when my boyfriend was having a heart attack . 7 times. In fact moments before we clocked the first symptoms that cat sprang un to action and convinced first responders and even same responders more than once when the ambulance attendants had yet to clock even 1 symptom. I can't explain it but I am thankful for Elli May cat....yes our dog on the other hand would run to the end of my finger and sniff it when i was actually pointing to the front door to go out and play. His favorite thing to do😊
I think your boyfriend is broken.
Cats can tell when something is close to death because thats how they find their meals.

very educational presentation . thank you Nova
Idk if you call it love, loyalty, or both but the movie Hitachi proves that they def have one or both for us. It’s based on a true story and one of the best dog movies a person can watch.
the most critically important publisher of medias, pbs. thank you
For those wondering, doGs do seem to go back 30kya or more, mtDNA (female lineage) haplogroup C is the original European line, it's just no longer dominant, which is not that surprising (it happens with human populations). Hg C is still common in Mastiffs and bullies. We have multiple early "wolfdogs" around 30kya and they're 4 THOUSAND miles apart. By 20kya dogs where becoming common in eastern Eurasia, which is where the NOW dominant haplogroups A and B come from. There has been a lot of mixing of wolves into dogs, and dog DNA back into modern wolves, muddying the waters...
By 12kya dogs had already become widespread and genetically distinct, all this rounding DOWN to 20 or FIFTEEEN kya is a lil ridiculous.
Great doc though, didn't mean to imply otherwise.
Poor foxes, to have lived all of their lives in a cage.
Right?
and to never even put their paws on the ground.
That's what I thought
Russians can be notorious for their experiments. Remember when Stalin tried to breed the ape warrior?
Could the cages be any smaller?
Love this!🎉
Good dog.
This has an excellent way of explaining how dogs evolved from wolves. I never quite understood before.
Does Callie have a page I can follow? She’s an inspiration too ❤️
Dogs are good people
Lovely souls. I'd sacrifice myself for my doggo; I'm sure she would too.
Very cool video! I love dogs!
I don’t need a MRI scan of my dogs 🧠 to know he loves me. ( it’s obvious.)’
Dogs bring out the best and the worst in people!
A lot of people think if we ever make contact with aliens that they'll be hostile. One only needs to look at how many dogs there are on the planet vs how many wolves to see that indiscriminate love and willingness to cooperate is a far more powerful long-term survival strategy.
Dog wags man 🤗
Food is just a necessary part of the relationship. They've got to eat. They can scavenge as well as any animal.
I love dogs
dogs are so cool. They always love you to them you are cool.
The way these animals bound with us, like no other organism, the work they provide in various areas (agriculture; law enforcement; military; social and health services) makes them deserve specific legislation that affords them judicial protection fitting of their status in society.
It's amazing that someone could make a boring documentary about dogs, but here it is.
Dogs are living with us because we have couches. End of Story. LMAO
I have had many dogs and wolves in all those relationships I have noticed , in both groups some are smart some are not, some love the affection some not so much .
Dogs really are the best
I can, and have, left a bag of beef jerky laying on the coffee table and walked away from it and walked over to the corner store. Come back 15 minutes later and that bag of Jerry will still be there when I get back home. My dogs will not touch anything until I say so and offer it to them. I have always been scarry good at training my dogs. And the two I have now are no exceptions. Yup Flow and the Honey Bear.
Awesome docu - Thanx!
I could see someone finding a litter of wolf pups 30,000 years ago, thinking they were cute and since mama wolf was dead, raising them. The ones who were friendly and "tamer" stayed with their human "pack", the others left. After generations, the wolves became tamer and eventually became dogs. My evidence is the number of hits on any cute animal video! LOL!
Check out the movie 'Alpha', the last 10 minutes will explain it all though the whole movie is excellent
