@@cfbg and in many cases, their last as well. I've lost track of the amount of times someone has told me they love Korean films cos they saw Oldboy "years ago" and they've been meaning to check out more. When I ask them if they've seen anything past Oldboy, there's nothing . . . except maybe Train To Busan. Their loss, at the end of the day, I guess.
@@KyleS3m3noff I haven't seen much. Oldboy, the vengeance trilogy, I saw the Devil, most of Bong Joon Ho's work, and a few horror ones. I'd say Oldboy is my favorite. Parasite, for example, is a far better constructed film objectively speaking, but I still prefer Oldboy. Don't really know what it is, it just has a certain feel to it. @@joaosantos5503 those ones seem to be the popular cornerstones, and they're all bloody solid films, no doubt. But they paint a very singular picture, I feel. I'm just so co.ety over Oldboy. Imagine if you went to Korea and the *only* US film anyone ever talked about was The Usual Suspects. Great film, awesome twist, but there's literally hundreds more on that level or higher.
I feel like this film shows the ideal way to shoot fight scenes. Long shots, clear view of the action, and good sound editing/mixing. That entire hall fight makes a you feel like you’re in there with him. Crisp boxing at the end too
When I watched the 1st season of Netflix's Daredevil series, the awesome hallway fight immediately reminded me of Oldboy. Sure enough, the fight choreographers took it as inspiration for their gritty, all-in fight scene.
This is the first and only film I had to press stop on when the twist happened-- I felt dirty, betrayed, shocked and numb... I literally had to take time away from the film. A few days passed and then I was brave enough to finish it.This is the only film that has ever done that to me. And by the end of the film you realize it's not Oh Dae-su's revenge story it's Yoo Ji-tae revenge story. That last shot of Oh Dae-su smiling is haunting... It's not only a revenge film but moreover it's a tragedy. No one wins in the end. And this is the first film I felt especially at the big revelation, the climax, it just kicks in the stomach and keep kicking and kicking and kicking you when you're down. So much feelings going through my head... So much thoughts... Ultimately Old Boy showed me it doesn't matter what the subject matter of the film is as long as it's good and compelling it will work.
@@patinho5589 Yes, I have seen it! But only once! For obvious reasons of course, but trust me it's imprinted in my mind still! It's another film that was really and truly hard to watch!
If you want a more simple revenge film with the same main actor from this film Choi Min-sik. Then I would suggest giving "I Saw The Devil" a watch. I mean it's another movie that isn't for the faint of heart as the violence in it is brutal. But it is about a man just getting his revenge for the entire film. Just it has a great twist to it compared to most revenge films which are just man fights waves of underlings for 80% of the film to get to the man he wants to get his revenge against. Instead it flips that formula in a really unique way which I can't recall ever seeing in any other film.
@@LS111AT Yup although to the faint of heart this film isn't for. As I made my friend and his GF watch this film one afternoon and my buddies GF ended up having Nightmares all night long about this film mostly Choi Min-Sik killing her over and over again.
The thing about the ending is that the way it was shot it suggests that the final hypnosis on Oh Dae Su fails. The "monster" is alive. So he knows what he is getting into. He can't go back to blissful ignorance, no matter how hard he tries.
Man, first 'In Bruges', now 'Oldboy', you guys are doing my favorites. Looking for a great random watch - 'Not Quite Hollywood'... Trust me, it's a good time.

Park Chan-wook is a fantastic s. korean director and despite most likely not being suitable for a youtube reaction, The Handmaiden (2016) is his masterpiece.
It's certainly not gonna draw as many views, and a couple of scenes would need to be blurred (and then blur the blur), but I'd agree 100% that it's his masterpiece.

I remember loving The Good The Bad and The Weird but it's been awhile since I have seen it so have to rewatch it to see if it still holds up. But I did love I Saw The Devil. Where almost all of them are the MC taking on underlings for like 80% of the film until they finally get to the main guy they are seeking revenge against. Where I Saw the Devil says screw all of that and just decides to have it focus on the protagonist and antagonist. Also funny to see Choi Min-sik as I think I saw both Oldboy and I Saw the Devil like back to back without knowing he was in both films and playing reverse roles in both of them.
