    I find it funny that "Yankee" or "Yank" was originally supposed to be an insult but we just decided to make it our thing.

      Actually when we took it up we were winning battles and it was intended to be as an insult back to the British saying if we were a bunch of doodles then what does that make the British who were getting beaten by doodles

    You know what is very odd? At least I think it's odd;
    No one has taken it upon themselves to do an instructional video on CZcams on how to play the Revolutionary or Civil War 6 hole fife up through a simple tune or two.
    I mean there are instructional videos for almost any kind of instrument including folk instruments, such as the Irish flute and bagpipes even the Recorder. Plus there's a lot of people on CZcams showing off their individual talents with those instruments as well as may be throwing in a little ad hoc instruction.
    But there's really little to nothing, mostly nothing, for any kind of fife much less that particular kind.
    And some fife and drum corps is look kind of small. It seems to me that that would be a good recruiting tool to have some videos out there like that.
    Again, kind of weird that nobody has done that.

      @pqcha5437 Před 4 lety +8

      I'm with you man. Me and my brother are musicians/flag bearers for the Mexican Army in Palo Alto National Parks and we took it upon ourselves to learn to play fife and drums. Ive learned drums pretty easily as rudiments havent really changed through the years but when I upgraded to a small wooden 6 holed fife their have been NO videos on how to play some simple tunes. I mean, i honestly think their should be more tutorials as their are alot of younger people who love history who would to learn these instruments, but in southern Texas, their are about ZERO people who know how to play fife and drum so its very difficult to learn these cool instruments.

    • @ironmatic1
      @ironmatic1 Před 3 lety +3

      Step 1: Buy a plastic Cooperman fife for $10
      2: Figure out how to make flute embouchure, learn how to read music if you can’t.
      3: Look at a few fingering charts and find the fingerings most in tune for your specific instrument
      4: Use sheet music from Village Volunteers, Traditional Tune Archive, and ABC Notation
      BearBrick z I’m in Southern Texas :)

    • @michaelrs8010
      @michaelrs8010 Před 3 lety +1

      @@ironmatic1 Actually I did, buy a plastic copper, 8 years ago ago, and off and on over the years I could not make the thing work for the life of me. So, thinking that I would have liked to have one just to have it, and they are cheap enough, shortly after my OP above, I bought a ABW Model F from Be a Fifer and began working with it re the necessary embouchure to at least do a scale. Turned out to be easier than I thought it would at that basic level.
      Then, drawing on my bagpipe practice chanter and tin whistle experiences, proceeded to work on Mary Had a Little Lamb 😄.
      Now I can do that and Amazing Grace and Going Home and the Skye Boat song fairly well. Still have a little trouble going into the higher octaves, but since the only one I performed for is my dog, who usually runs to the other room anyway when I start, I'm not too worried about it 😄
      But seriously, you have all those people in New England and a number down south (all those that are active or former and have gone through Colonial Williamsburg or other fife bands) doing all this fife stuff with open holed military style fifes over all these years....and *nobody has posted a coherent beginner lesson series on CZcams on the subject.
      THAT is a source of incredulous curiosity to me.
      *"Nobody" is actually an exaggeration for emphasis. I did find a couple of people, one being a young kid, that did somewhat disorganized one or two videos on the subject, but that was about it.

    • @ironmatic1
      @ironmatic1 Před 3 lety +1

      @@michaelrs8010 Only answer I can think of to that in all the areas with fife and drum groups, they just assume if someone wants to learn the fife they can just come and join the group. :/
      I decided to learn my plastic fife that I already had for a while right after school closed down last year. The first tunes I properly learned were The Minstrel Boy and 17th Regiment Quickstep, after of course I figured out you have to blow harder into it to make the high octave fingerings sound. Now I have a Grenadilla fife from Musique Morneaux.
      I guess it just kinda came naturally to me... about two months before school started again I went ahead and bought a Boehm C flute and joined my high school's band.
      Keep playing the fife. It's fun.

    • @michaelrs8010
      @michaelrs8010 Před 3 lety

      @@ironmatic1 yeah, I know what you're saying, but if it's true I think it's an odd way for them to be thinking. And ALL of them thinking like that?
      I mean look at all the bagpipe bands that are out there. Then go to CZcams and look at all the beginning of instructional videos you can find on the bagpipe practice chanter. Some very well done. Not to mention all the people offering online lessons.
      I honestly thought that of all people, if anybody would do it, it would have been the Colonial Williamsburg people.
      But oh well. No use beating a dead horse. I've moved back to the bagpipes anyway. Now I just have a very decent Fife sitting among my collection of tin whistles. Just have to remember to oil and swab it out now and then 😄

    And when he's tall
    He's what we call a dinosaur sensation
    Barney's friends are big and small
    They come from lots of places
    After school they meet to play
    And sing with happy faces
    Barney shows us lots of things
    Like how to play pretend
    ABC's, and 123's
    And how to be a friend
    Barney comes to play with us
    Whenever we may need him
    Barney can be your friend too
    If you just make-believe him!

    Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.
