In this video, we delve into the fascinating world of rare silver and gold coins and how their mintage affects their prices. When it comes to investing in coins, the mintage number can be a critical factor in determining their value.
We'll start by defining mintage - it refers to the number of coins that are produced in a particular year or for a specific design. Generally, the lower the mintage, the more valuable the coin will be. However, this isn't always the case, and we'll explain why.
When a coin has a low mintage, there are fewer coins in circulation, making them more scarce and desirable to collectors. As a result, the price of these coins tends to increase over time. On the other hand, a coin with a high mintage is more common, making it less valuable than a rarer coin.
But, what about those coins with an extremely low mintage number? These can be tricky to price, as there may be few, if any, reference sales. Without a clear idea of what similar coins have sold for in the past, it can be challenging to determine an accurate value.
In addition to mintage, other factors can affect the value of silver and gold coins, such as their condition and historical significance. Therefore, it's essential to do your research before investing in coins, especially those with a low mintage.
Overall, rare silver and gold coins can be a valuable investment opportunity, but it's important to understand how their mintage impacts their value. Whether you're a seasoned collector or a beginner investor, this video will provide valuable insights into the world of coins and money.

When there is a series of mintage of just 100 coins, there can only be a maximum of 100 collected series in the world. I see Apmex has one in their inventory for sale, but why would I pay that type of premium to start a collection when I really have zero chance of ever obtaining the set? If there are 15,000 people interested in a series, a mintage of 10,000 pays off very nicely. If 15,000 people are interested but a mintage of 100, the interest dies out very quickly.

I have some 1/4 oz gold coins with mintages of 250; Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and the like, and I have a silver coin with a mintage of 100.
Those Nautical Ounces are beautiful works of art, and they look good in gold. I note the coin with HMS Endeavour; which was Captain James Cook's ship when he first visited New Zealand in 1769.

    Lovely coins BYB!
The buyers for these would be limited. But they would potentially be desirable at a heavy premium to a certain type of collector. These type of sales can take time. I don’t have experience in these type of sales in collectible coins, but I have in other areas. And the key is to hold a high premium price and hold out for someone to approach you to achieve the best deal. Now I don’t have much idea how sought after these would be. But if I were you I perhaps consider advertising these type of pieces on your website open to offers (perhaps for years).
The right buyer could just well end up being one of your viewers.

In 1934 when FDR confiscated gold, he allowed USA citizens to keep rare gold coins. They were exempt from confiscation. Thus, it is a blessing to have a rare coin. That aside, an extremely low mintage series is a curse because there are not enough coins to create a large enough collector base to drive demand in the resale market. I think those coins will be hard to sell at a large premium. You will always have the gold value.

I’m a sucker for nautical themed coins and that’s a stunning set of coins.
Very low mintage numbers will add value to a coin, but demand and popularity seems to have a greater effect on the value of a coin, sometimes driving it to crazy prices.
    Thanks for sharing 👍

    Good subject.
Too low mintage from a less known mint is more of gimmick.
High quality with moderate mintage like the perth lunar is better

I'm being arbitrary, but if there is no established market price on low mintage PM coins, 40% over spot for 1oz+ proof isn't the worst figure that comes to mind. Of course, there's a ton of exceptions, like age, historical significance, smaller weights, sets, presentation/certificates, etc. but it's what I feel is about right for a starting point.
That's a beautiful set by the way and the detailed depictions are stunning.
    Interesting video BYB, thank you.

Love this series, they look stunning in gold.
I have them in silver and I think it's a limited mintage number in that metal, in the grand scheme of world availability, maybe 10,000 or 15,000 I can't remember exactly.
100 is super low, so the premium is huge I guess.
Nonetheless, they are beautiful and well designed ❤️
    Rock on Rambling Club 👍

Mintage is sure important for modern made for collector gold coins on the primary market, but judging by the 20 low mintage gold coins I bought for no more than spot + 2%, when time passes and the hype has faded, they all become just gold. If those 6 very beautiful coins come into a dealer, they will fetch spot at best. I would snap them up if they came my way.
Also some MFC coins have such a low mintage that nobody is aware of them and they too wallow in obscurity.
But, they are all more interesting than just another Britannia, Maple, Buffalo or AGE and cheaper than the latter two.

That is an amazing set of coins, i bet people with full sets are in single digits. I was once told wealthy people that can afford to buy full sets dont want to put the effort into collecting over a long period but will happily spend over the odds to purchase a complete set, when you have the full set and there are no others then you set the price, you are the one dictating their value and those you would sell to would only want them if they are ridiculously expensive.

there’s just so many series and if you want to flip, you have to do it at the right time as new low mintage coins will be minted. ive bought in on a few just because i wanted them. and that, to me, is fine sometimes. puts a little bling in the stack

  • @chrismacgregor5614
    @chrismacgregor5614 Před rokem

They are a lovely set of coins! The value of the set is ultimately what someone is prepared to pay for them I suppose. Obviously you would expect to get back what you pay for something like this when you sell plus a profit as well. There is a similar issue with unique gold jewelry ( for example) when “mintage “ is literally one. Value all gets very subjective when they’re are no or very few benchmarks.

  • @HifiCentret
    @HifiCentret Před rokem

IMHO. Yes mintage can probably be too low. But if it is a local coin then that might add up for it. I don't know why but it seems like many won't even pay on par with with more common coins. Because they're unsure if it's real or not? And the problem is even much larger on the larger coins because if the large amount the metal content represent.
So they might make a good deal - granted you don't pay too much when buying them. When SHTF collectors value if the first thing to disappear.
Last year I tried to sell a proof 200 Ringgit 1977 (6,5 gram gold content, 7,2 g .900), only minted in 975 samples according to Numista, in order to trade some of the collectors value to gold. A lot wanted to buy it at price dealers pay for it but of course it didn't make any sense to me and why risk someone who probably just want to see how you live when dealer pays the same and much easier. Even at spot + 30% which I think is an outstanding deal and would make it possible for me to exhange it for a modern 1/4 oz bullion coin - no one wanted to buy. So I still got the two coins I won in a local auction. There also was two non proof. Not tried selling those and they have much higher mintages. Unfortunately someone broke their original cards. Perhaps I should try selling one of them to see if it's possible to exchange that for a modern 1/4 bullion coin or at least a sovereign. For me it's - almost - all about the gold. Or so I migt think. I actually got to like the 1977 200 Ringgits - very nice designs.

I thought about collecting the gold Tuvalu street Fighter coins but I'm not sure if they're going to continue the series now that the Queen has passed away we still haven't seen the gold Phoenix coin which is part of the myths and legends series

  • @Professionalcynicalist

Unless I'm mistaken coins sell for what people are willing to pay. Auction prices are freely available to all and sundry, yet I struggle as a regular metals channel viewer on CZcams to recall a video on this from a uk provider in recent years.

  • @seminumismaticguy8575

Mintage is linked to demand. If it's too low, no one knows about it . If it's too high it's too easy to get hold of. Having said that years ago silver pandas had a mintage of 8,00,000 and still went for way over spot and other coins..

How do we find out the mintages of the QUEENS BEAST series?

  • @seminumismaticguy8575

These kind of coins are a mine field, some make you a killing some get you stung. They are also affected badly by hype going from sky high to low as trends change . there is no rhyme and reason to why therefore I avoid them for my stack and only have them in my personal collection.

Looking at recent 2023 auctions of proof sovereign's demonstrates just how little spot price influences achieved results. Pieces such as a PF70 grade 1979 sov can exceed £2,600 or a PF70 1989 over £2,000 and the list goes on. Even a "mundane" year like 1992 hit £2,200. No relation to their £400 bullion content. Collectors are willing to pay serious premiums on choice perfect proofs. I would be tempted to grade your nautical 1oz coins. Who knows what price a PF69 or 70 would achieve: £2,000, £3,000 or £4,000???

I fell foul, well kind of when I first started collecting/stacking. I bought a 3 coin set of a £5, £2 and £1. I bought it for spot and thought I had a fantastic deal, even though it is worth much more than I paid for it even at spot, I know I will only just get above spot for when I sell. Happy to sit on it for a while when it will most probably gain more value.
