- History of the Solvay Company. In this first episode, the developpement of the ammonia-soda process by the Solvay brothers - Ernest and Alfred - and their associates; and its internationalisation deployement.
Very interesting as stated the invention of the production of soda ash was not solvay's
however in a small laboratory in winnington, Northwich, England if memory serves correct
Coincidentally it was here in winnington that he setup UK operations
It's also very ironic that in the very same lab it was also discovered that soda ash will cause glass to be smooth if added correctly during the glass manufacturer
Added note that it's also the same lab that invented working clingfilm
To this day the factory that invented one of the first ways to produce soda ash that adopted the solvay process still has the main factory road called SOLVAY ROAD named after the guy that introduced/pushed the industrialisation of soda ash to the place that worked out how to use it in amounts never imagined before
SOLVAY ROAD also goes outside the factory to where the workers were housed to build the original plants at the main winnington site the island opposing the main site in winnington and the almost neighboring lostock
After construction they were used for the workers of the main winnington site
Only the main winnington site and lostock site remain open and winnington also lost the lime beds used for the process resulting in them now using lime towers instead
The site In winnington had seen a major over haul around 2010 ish
Where a gas power plant was run by eon feeding excess steam to the plant to reduce production costs and then to reheat the same steam to send to lostock creating an approx 20 mile reasonably high pressure steam pipe line this did however reduce cost but later gas prices mean that they are now producing it at the same cost as before the overhaul looking at further reducing costs by using hydrogen from one of the three largest hydrogen generators worldwide recently installed at UK oil and gas refinery's
This company left cesspools behind in Syracuse in the mid 1900s
