Stop Your Android From SPYING On You!

  • David & David show you how to stop Android apps from spying on you. There are a lot of different Android settings that can restrict what apps can do and have access to on your Android.
    Unfortunately, Androids aren't completely secure. In December 2022, Google had to release an update to fix more than 80 security vulnerabilities affecting Android phones. Four of these vulnerabilities were classified as "critical", meaning they were especially serious.
    One "critical" vulnerability allowed hackers to run code on Androids using Bluetooth. The hackers were able to do this without even requesting permission to use Bluetooth on the device! When there's a serious security issue that could allow hackers or your Android to spy on you, make sure to download and install the latest security update.
    The Sensors Off developer option turns off all sensors on your #Android, including the camera, microphone, accelerometer, and gyroscope. When Sensors Off is on, the Camera app won't open and your Android will display a message saying "security policy prevents use of camera."
    However, big tech doesn't need to tap your camera or microphone to collect information about you. A lot of apps probably already have access to your location, contacts, text messages, and more. Head to Permission Manager and be intentional about which apps have access to other apps, services, and information on your Android.
    We also recommend turning off Diagnostics & Usage data as well as Personalized Ads for both Google and manufacturer of your Android.
    Next, make sure the apps on your Android don't have the ability to install other apps without your permission. We recommend turning off Install Unknown Apps for every app so you have control when an app wants to install another app on your Android.
    Finally, head to Device Admin Apps to see which apps have been given administrative control over your Android. This control can include simple things like locking and unlocking the screen, but some apps could have the ability to erase all the data on your Android. Make sure any untrustworthy app doesn't have admin access you don't want it to have.

      I've discovered that it doesn't always give a notification of a permission being removed. As I have discovered.
      There are certain apps that I need permissions to remain, so I have to do through each one and disable that time not used thing. Which, isn't even accurate, because I've seen apps that I do use, all of a sudden a permission is removed!
      However, disabling that check does seem to keep the perms on the apps I want.

    So it's been like 2 weeks now since I watched this video and I gotta say... these things really did made my Galaxy S10e last a little longer. And it was noticeable for me ngl. I actually couldn't believe it especially yesterday while I was out for like almost 5 hours with mobile data turned, my Galaxy Watch4 & Galaxy Buds+ connected, listening to music at around 40-70% volume, Ambient mode on level 3 and they were mostly in my ears the whole time I was outside, and I came home with a battery of 33%.
    What's impressive is that I haven't replaced its stock battery yet.

      What you're using on your phone is closed source. Samsung, Google, Xiaomi etc do not release sources for their OS, only for the kernel. AOSP is open source, but no device runs that. The closest you can get to a usable open source OS on a phone, is GrapheneOS on a pixel.

      That's not what open source means. And many parts of Android are very much closed source, all the Google and Samsung stuff for example. Developer options are open source, but also while it is open, you can just see it (or fork it into your own OS), Google won't accept your PRs if you submit any changes. AOSP and the Android you get on your phone differ in many ways.

    A very important developer option that was missed in this video is changing the default USB configuration. By default, android allows any USB connection effectively full access to your phone. This can mean plugging in your phone to a computer at work to get a quick charge can allow your work computer's security software to run a full scan of your device and install management apps, or even worse if you use a public charger at an airport or something then it can automatically install malware to your device. All this can be prevented by changing the default usb behavior to "charge only" and you tap a notification to change it when you'reat home on your personal computer and whatnot.
    Also, it's notable with these settings changes that quite frequently android updates will re-enable many of these settings or install new apps and automatically hand over admin priviledges to the new app (when you can't disable system updates ability to install apps) so you really have to go through this process every few months to check what new BS android has done to your phone. One of the more recent android updates on samsung has made "smart switch" permanently installed, it cannot be disabled, and it has access to absolutely everything on your device, all of which was done without any warning to the user.

    The problem with permissions management is you cannot turn everything off. Google has all apps linked to be dependent on each other so while some apps can have permissions removed many others cannot. Android/Samsung or Google should not be allowed to view photos, videos, messages or call logs from their end. This leads to doxxing, exploiting or other nefarious acts against users. All phones have a built-in separate chip that can make emergency calls without a sim. The developers option cannot bypass the speaker, camera or gyro sensors which still can be collected even without a sim. The only way to ensure your privacy is to throw your phone in a lake and never use one again

    I have only used a smart phone for five years, and don't use computers. It took me months to realize there were settings within settings, permissions, etc., but I am using a Samsung S10 that's around 4 years old, and using many of the battery saving tweaks and tricks you both recommend. No joke, I am using my phone all day long, with videos, streaming, texts, emails and social media, etc., and my phone often shows on-screen times of seven and a half to a bit over 8 hours on any given day!
    I have impressed some serious phone techies who are much more experienced than I!
    My only problem is when I optimize all of my apps at one time, and I go back to that setting just minutes later, all of those blue 'on' toggle lights are no longer lit up.

    It's a year old video and there were some changes on the setting pages, but it was really helpful. Didn't know that all these options were on😰

    Terrific video with advanced but easily accomplished settings adjustments, enhancing privacy & avoiding unnecessary data collection by installed apps. I'm only thru the first 8:49, pausing while viewing actual adjustments in a side-by-side view. The $2 donation offer re: commenting is a real deal! Keeping my fingers crossed, the video ending has no post-credit risk warnings... so to speak.

My brother came over and he just got a new Android 4G and we are trying to set up all the setting for the last 3 day's, He only would like to make call and text that it how to set it up lol we are going nuts with this any how have you got a video for a Android 4G setting and how do? I know it’s an old phone it new to him thanks. Your phone setting on the video are a lot different then on the 4G some are the same not all though.

    I love the information. I have a request. You go to fast , wondered if you could slow up a little. Yes I know you have limited time. But us old folks need a special channel to learn a little slower. Thank you.

    Mahalo for this! I learned that my basic Android phones don’t have settings to turn sensors off or on. Mine use Android 8 and 9. Probably the better Android phones have this sensor turn-off feature! Very useful for when I buy a new Android phone; I’ll know to look for it! Mahalo!

    Mine is only called Developer Options. And although it does have ALOT of options, it doesn't have an option about sensors or any options called privacy.

      Developer options were in a different place for me as well (under system) but then there was something called "Quick settings developer tiles" under developer options. That leads to the sensor thing in my case. Do you have that?

    • @PlantJesus222
      @PlantJesus222 Před rokem +14

    Have you got info anywhere on Data Usage Control (found in Apps and Notifications). Currently all my apps are allowed this by default, but I'm not sure if they all need to or not.

    I had a lot of these already disabled but so glad yall showed me the other stuff. The dev mode thing and sensor deactivator option is great, going to use that forever! And the apps permissions screen, removed a lot of apps from accessing other things. My menus are a little different from the one on that phone you used but still was able to find and turn off all this trash. Thanks so much!

    You forgot to mention that to have much better privacy, one also has to disable the analytics apps installed by Google, Qualcom and almost all phone manufacturers. This can only be done using ADB, but it ensures much better privacy.

      @@Nonamam turn on USB or wireless debugging on your phone, and connect it to your computer. From there you can use ADB to manually uninstall the analytics app

      @Fridgeson_ Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@Nonamam i used LADB to debloat my phone without a computer so the command for me would go like "pm uninstall --user 0 " (no need to input )
      might be slightly different for other ADBs so a further research beforehand would be recommended
