Mind blowing energy and musicianship. God, do I miss Allan. Virgil and Jimmy are killing it!! Love ya Virgil! Huge fan.
Whaaa Donati and Holdsworth played together!?!? Thank you universe! So wonderful!!
Holy Shit, amazing stuff! RIP Allan. Virgil is the greatest drummer of our time. incredible!!
I've seen Allan and the boys so many times since 1989. Always the best, and always an intimate show since it's not for everybody.
Haslip sounds great in this context. I've heard him for years with the Yellowjackets. Nice to hear him in another burning context.
Jimmy Haslip is a great bass player. I have seen him live with a number of musicians and he has never failed to impress me. just great talent.
Virgil ...brought new energy to the Holdsworth sound.....along with Jimi. Would have wished for Virgil to have been with Alan allot longer.......if their was a redo universe button.
I love this. Virgil brings in a fresh approach. I love the way Allan uses various drummers. Love Chad, Vinnie, Gary, et al but I think Virgil is pretty fucking amazing here.
For a "drummer's drummer", and a monster at that, Virgil is really dynamic!
Thanks for the reminder..... Virgil, you are absolutely one of the best!
R.I.P Sir Allan Holdsworth, one of the best !
maybe ...well DEFINITELY THE best for his particular discipline , since imitated by many
Had the pleasure of seeing & hearing Allan's work from Jean Luc Ponty's 1977 Enigmatic Ocean tour, Phenomenal Guitarist, Eddie Van Halens Fave guitarist besides himself!
Yeah, Virgil gets underneath Allans music in a very involved way that is so complimentary yet subtle. Too bad we didn't get more of this collaboration before Allan's all-to-early departure.
Friggin incredible polyrhythms! The light touch and finesse wow
I have been following Virgil since 12 years ago... Man you gotta check all his work Jazz/Fussion is only one style of all that he plays. He plays Heavy, rock, progessive. He also is an incredible pianist. He has devoted his life to music.
from this excerpts from the classic songs I feel that it grooves completely different with Virgil, i agree with some posters about him trying to play counter rythms to much while comping solos. but it´s refreshing, different, he doesnt use the ride cymbal that much while comping and has more of a rock vibe than a jazz approach, it´s original !!! this guys are certainly three monsters of their instruments.
I cannot say this is the best bassist that AH has had in a trio but...easily the best recording of any of his bassists. Very easy to hear what he is doing
@@CBR1000FJ I think they are saying that, for them, Jimmy Johnson was the best with Allan.
AH passed right before he was going to tour with Evan Marien. That was probably the trio I was most excited to see after JJ.
Virgil rocks this material! i'm a big Husband fan, but I love this guy as well!
So glad I've seen these three lads live. R.i.p. Allan...
RIP the incomparable Allan....
lucky all of you that got the chance to play with the master...
And, of course I have always loved Jimmy Haslip. I first heard him on the Gino Vanelli Brother to Brother tour.
Seeing these guys tonight! Super excited!!
12:20 I was zoning out listening to this and this part came out of nowhere, love that ambience
I know Virgil recently switched to DW but damn, those Pearls just sound SO nice!
Stixnfeet Durden I know! When I first saw him in the mid 1990s, he was playing Demo drums, and then he switched to Premiere; he played a cool green Genista kit then. He then moved to Pearl, and the rest is history.
And before the Remo drums, he was playing Sonor drums - the Loose Change era.
Yeah, Pearls sound allways great. On the other hand, from my point of view, he should have stayed with Sonor
Beautiful.
Very inspired, pulsing bass work from Jimmy Haslip, also. His playing seemed more subdued when the trio first started; he's really dialed in here. Magnificent trio work.
WOW!!! Virgil is blowing my mind...thank you to the max!!!
Oh! My God ! this is good !Allan Holdsworth is the bes!t!! and that bass player is great!!
Virgil is the great musician. So strong technique and intelligent interacts with so diferent kind of musics but Chad was born to play with Allan. Haslip is so intense in this job. So good. And Allan Holdsworth is the last top of the music. The way he plays and understand music is not from this world. Beautiful and free perfomance. Thanks.
Love the drumming perfect for this band, and Alan’s sound in this vid
Audio quality is better than listening to a record! Wonderful performances. I've never heard Jimmy's tone so dialed in.
This is an incredible treat to see.. Thank you for posting
Thanks, this sounds amazing. Don't know much about the drummer Virgil, But Jimmy & Allan sounds great together.
Three world class musicians.
If you were a drummer you'd know who donati is. He's severe.
I’m not gonna lie, a lot of these views are definitely from me. Not sure how many, but definitely a lot. Thank you for sharing, this is stunning work
Damn those drums sound perfect great tone from everyone
Love these uploads, thank you very much Virgil!
Those drums are perfectly tuned and mic'd. Virgil is amazing.
I had the privilege and honor to see this Allan's tour here in Toronto Canada...o my god, I have no word to express how much I miss him, thanks so much for the posting
pretty cool to watch you playing with Holdsworth man... may his music live on forever.. it really was from the future i feel like he was wayyy ahead of his time.
Mr Donati you are my idol. Thank you so much for these new videos. Your talent and dedication come through every second you play and even when your not playing. You have inspired me since day one!
Yeah, I am a musician but not a drummer but I love the way Virgil counter punches and comes back at you for his sense of timing is awesome. Love jazz fusion!
Three masters, all in their own little worlds, yet coming together in symbiosis. Amazing.
Very nice concert and the set is very famous!!!... I love the work they made to arrange and adapte all composition of Holdsworth and Tony Williams...
Yeah!!! the music is excellent. I love this band : beautiful music....
Holdsworth with his 66 years old, he still surprises me again, and again, and more....
Thank you so much for this video!
I love a staggered beat , this guy can sustain it and keep it together in his own way, truly gifted.
Thank you for that !
VIRGIL DONATI = fantastic drummer !
..watched the 2012 show in berlin at Quasimodo..
GREAT
I will always miss Alan, he really was one of the best that there ever was and influenced more people then you could know.....I was lucky enough t see him live several times in NYC.....RIP Alan :-(
I totally agree with you @jamesedwardtheobald , that s exactly what I notices always when I listen to Virgil, he gets in the song and builds his fills in harmony with the rest. Brilliant guy!
thanks for the upload , great to hear a few newer renditions of some older tunes , and I dont mind hearing a few different band-mates . I don't mind the diversity although like everyone I have my favorite combinations of players as well . Regardless who is your favorite drummer , ... what a list he has played with . Loved It !
RIP A.H.
Big loss for Music.
Completely espetacular!!!
Stunning!
Monster drumming...outstanding
This really is some of the most incredible music being made today. WE NEED AN ALBUM!!!!
Wow, this is awesome. Great drummer!! and Allan is as good as always.
amazing !!
Im feeling you Virgil. thank you for the Inspiritation and the Excellence!
Absolutely stunning!!
Son unos genios!! Felicitaciones desde Mar del Plata, Argentina
it must be over 20 years (or close to it) I remember standing in the front bar of the Corner Hotel, watching the support act of Virgil Donati and Jack Jones (aka the Comaheads [sorry Virgil if i got it wrong] was the name of memory) then followed by the amazing brilliant Alan Holdsworth.
Now sitting in front of the PC and watching Virgil playing drums for Alan. my favourite drummer and guitarist together making me wish this was the Corner Hotel (Richmond, Victoria, Australia) watching this.
thank you for making such wonderful Music and a drumming style I would sell my soul for to play like that.
PS Virgil Do you still have the White Sonor from the old GrainStore Days ?? (lol) I remember talking to you at the Corner Hotel gig asking that question and you offered me drum lessons at the time
(I wish i could go back in time and slap my self silly and took up your offer lol )
hoping for more videos like these!! thank u virgil!!!!
Got to be drummers dream to play with Holdsworth.
Un univers musical unique que créé Allan Holdsworth depuis de nombreuses années...Avec ses deux nouveaux musiciens que j'adore depuis également de nombreuses années , nous assistons à une formidable expérience artistique.
Wow!
Artistry.
So much talent on this planet.
Greatest bass player I have ever heard.. Love Jimmy
super nice!!!.... incredible audio....
The amazing thing about Virgil is that no matter what kind of drums you got in front of him he always sounds like Virgil. Ever since he switched from Pearl to DW he still sounds pretty much the same. The sound comes from the player and not the gear. Of course good gear helps to make sure you sound like you should, but in the hands of the Masters they Will sound like the individual playing them. Great video
That's very true however, if he played say a Sonor SQ2 or the new Tama Star Maple series, he would sound even better. I don't think DW is his sound.
Perhaps, perhaps not. Either way, if he still uses the same drumheads and tune the drums the way he does, I think that it would sound almost the same, because that's the sound that Virgil choses. But you may be correct. Perhaps the future will tell.
Yes HE would sound the same but not ALL drums sound the same. DW quite frankly lack any tonal quality at all and if your statement rang true, then his DW kit would sound like his Pearl kit, and it doesn't.
Well, I wouldn't say they lack tonal quality. DW timbre match the drum shells and if you tune the drums to the same pitch as the shells, damn, they sing gooooood. Of course they don't sound exactly as the other companies. But they sing as much as all the other companies out there. But hey, Dw is not for everyone. Tama is not for everyone, pearl, sonor, and so on. I don't think we can agree with each other 100%. Lets agree to disagree. You have valid points, as do I. cheers man!
this live has something special. maybe the fact every single interpretation was outstanding.. damn that texas & proto cosmos
Another great artist I never got to see, and now never will.
Great collaboration here!
The girl in front is my dream girl ! That's a rare sight !

A really nice chemistry has developed between Holdsworth and Virgil. It wasn't near this tight or creative in videos from several months previous ... really special stuff here.
