Wow. It’s amazing what things you learn when you’re not looking for them. A stencil?! THATS GENIUS!! It sounds like such an obvious tool but I’ve not seen anyone else with one! Yet
Another great reason to make/use one of these is that the metal from a brush can not only get stuck in your food, but also in your throat, which is incredibly painful and apparently very hard/impossible to remove! Threw mine away when I learned that!
The concern isn't without merit but wire brushes have been used for this purpose for ages and it wasn't until recently that it's become an issue. I think its because people tend to get the cheapest ones they can find, leave them out in the weather and use them for multiple seasons. The wood the wire is imbedded in degrades over time and can cause the wires to come loose.
My wife got me one of those some time back and I liked the idea of the grill itself burning the grooves into it. If you're the kind of person who cleans their grill before and after using it religiously than it's a win. But if you're like me and tend to skip the after part so stuff gets caked on, an old school wire brush may be your weapon of choice lol
@@WoodByWrightHowTo what about a pizza peel then? It's a chance to do some glue-less joinery on the widest part and shape the edges into the right contour for the job.
Terrific idea James! Now I will have to make one of those for my son who does a lot of grilling! Thanks! 👍👍 Note: Wish that you had posted the dimensions of that scrapper. 🤔🤔
Hi I have 2 questions 1) Which types of wood are good for tools that come in contact with food? Which types of wood are safe for food? 2) Is simple olive oil from the grocery shop ok as a food safe wood finish? Does it protect the wood from repeated washings?
When it comes to food safe it is all up to personal preference. For me the type of blue really has no bearing on food safe. Most finishes win cured our food safe. But some people will view it very differently. When it comes to finishes and washing no finish what was stand washing. Generally if it's going to be washed you have to be willing to refinish it every 6 months or so. Often I don't finish them at all.
I've been making these for a couple years from all the oak door moldings I've replaced when I put in all the 6-panel doors in my house. I taper both sides of the blade from the 3/4 to 1/4", and let the user set the grill spacing the first time they use it. DO NOT PUT NOTCHES IN THE BLADE BASED ON YOUR GRILL GRATE. Every grill grate model has different spacing.
Make one for every grill so I can get it specific to the grill shape. If I was making for someone else I wouldn't put the notches in just let them burn them in overtime.

Some great tips for a better scrapper. Thanks!
Nice easy project. Will also make a good present.
Thanks James.
Row row row your scraper. Gently down the grill 😂

When rounding over with a rasp or file roll the other way. Don't raise the handle as you go, drop it. Counterintuitive but works great.

I think you should char the wood ,quite apt if you think about it.
Beautiful work, James! 😃
And it's a really good idea!!!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Nice! Can you do a separate video on a thinner spatula for a pan? Ways to use up short scraps.
I did a few spatula videos a while ago. I might have to do another one again sometime.

Wood-n't you know it, another great video! Quite the grilling you gave that final result.
Nice idea. A good gift for my son, who loves to grill. Thanks for sharing.
I never thought of doing this before. Thanks for the idea. I'm in!
Round here we use that for boiling crawfish...
Nice piece of work James. Thank you for sharing. Have a great 2024 and stay safe.🙂🙂
Great simple fun looking project. Thanks for sharing.
Yet another project to try!

I never measured it. It's all by what looks good.
You would have to fit it to the grate on his grill anyways.
Nice work! Great idea!
Snide remark!
Nice
Smoked maple mmm
Enjoy the bbq
cool
Wrong blue on the paracord, needs to be a few shades darker. I think everyone in our age bracket had a paddle or wooden spoon break on us.
This is a "snide remark" since you don't get very many of them. Enjoy it since it is rare.
Snide remarks, down below!

So my simple olive oil is OK if I redo the finish every 6 months, right?
right on. a lot of people love a simple olive oil finish for kitchen tools. it is easy to re do from time to time.
Thanks. This is what I wanted. A sime finish

A little larger and it could have been a pizza peel! I have the tools now but can't find any good wood. Firewood is about all I can get.
Snide
Kids will behave for a while until they find out what it is actually for. 😅
LoL
Ohh so this isn't an alternative type of card scraper.
