It used to be that what you saw on a movie set would pretty much be what you saw in the final movie. If you wanted to have a mountain in the background, you'd have to go to one.
However with modern technology, CGI has made it possible to have that mountain in the background without even leaving your home. Just whip up a green screen and you're good to go!
This advancement in technology has meant for some big differences between what is filmed and what we see in the final movie.
Here are some Hollywood movies without the VFX applied!
Enjoy :)

I wish I could see Jurassic World without the CGI. It would turn into the best comedy of the year, I think.

I got a degree in RTF (radio, television and film) but ended up going a totally different direction down the road and became a registered nurse. The only thing I hate is everything I learned in pursuing my RTF degree totally takes the fun out of watching movies, especially these days when, like you said, there's much more CGI than most people realize.
Im the opposite. Worked as an anesthesiologist, and now I am studying cinema in college :p
You are absolutely right about taking the fun out of watching movies, its like learning how to do a magic trick xD

Just gotta say I love this channel cause it gets straight to the point and doesn’t talk about 1 topic for 5 minutes at a time. Great video
There are often times where I wish certain movies used more practical effects than CGI, but the things that we can achieve with CGI is truly amazing and fun to watch.
I love videos that highlight the invisible VFX that we never even question. In Gravity, there are portions of the scenes where parts of Sandra Bullock are entirely CG and comped together to allow it to look like she's floating. In Civil War not just the airport was CG, but also pretty much every time Spider-Man and Black Panther are on screen they are VFX. There are lots of instances where movies that aren't about fantastical events use CG to enhance composition, to put actors together that couldn't be there on the day or just to create an idealized environment. The film 100 Foot Journey is a good example of this. Cheers!
That tiger was the best cgi I have ever seen
Yes I agree!
that was a real tiger composed with that shot. Because shot was still and people were added afterwards, so it's easy to compose that shot. It was not CGI
the best CGI is in the new Blade Runner movie
Intelligent Fool there was no tiger on the set, it's complete CGI you fucking idiot
The truth is actually that it's both. It's mostly CGI but in some scenes they had to use a real Tiger.
The actors are truly amazing , they make us believe that they are seeing things that doesn't Even exist duh ..*-*
Cozz they have tO act,, its their job✌🏾😎
You know why they are so good at acting?
They simply pretend to be the person that they are portraying in the movie
4301
Most of the fighting scene in Hollywood movies are often times a Chinese stuntman, and not the actors acts that they show us on the screen.
I always assumed actors were given a substitute target to look at.
One day even the green screens will be added by cgi.
Making them Complety useless and unnecessary. If you have that technology, why would you use it to add a greenscreen?

why the pay more to actors than editors
Editors do get paid a lot! Just not as much as actors. But the problem is, there are many more tech savvy editors in the world than Tom Hanks's or Anne Hathaways who can play any character.
Editors don't have the same charisma and suave as good actors.
Editors don't draw people to buy tickets. That's also the same reason to why some actors get paid more than master filmmakers. It's unfair but that's just how businesses work. Studio can replace ILM with another studio and maybe people whine a bit about bad CG, but people will still go. Studio replace A-lister with someone with lesser ticket draw and people won't go.
It doesn't really matter if you can play anyone if you suck at it
Editors don't do visual effects.
This is awesome. Clear, concise, a little amusing, informative and to the point.
Thanks.
Amazing work, good job:)
Thank you. This is the most interesting video you've made. The CGI is generated so fast in most of your videos that I can't tell what the actors actually see. This video shows me exactly what the actors actually see. Please make more videos of *_this_* type in the future.
I don't get it when people complain about replacing backgrounds with vfx.
They've always done it, just it used to be with a painting on a piece of glass infront of the camera lined up to the horizon line
TheChromaKid I did a cool vid where I did a bg replacement
Showing the frame of reference is always interesting. Keep them coming.
Props to sir Ian McKellan in the Hobbit. Most of his acting in the series was only him surrounded by green screen talking to himself and having to imagine a hobbit and eleven dwarves around him.
Only here cause of the nude guys dressed as dinasuors
Mon Bon hello
why are they naked
fenris6051 how are they dressed?
It actually makes you appreciate modern actors so much because how difficult would it be to immerse yourself in the story when you're surrounded by stupid green screens? I think it's amazing what people can do with effects now, but man. I wouldn't want to act in that environment.

Sorry, but the airport in civil war is real. I live in this city and the airport was blocked the whole time of the movie making. The actors was there too.
Funny fact: in the movie they said the scene plays in Berlin. But that isnt the Berlin airport. Its the airport of Leipzig/Halle. Its a complete different german state.

Well done video. and good narrator :)
Imagine what is in the head of each actor. To show any emotion that comes to mind without any external trigger, this is astonishing
2:25 Haters will say the Raptors are fake.
It is a bit funny how over the years our eyes (or at least mine) are fooled by what is CGI and what is not. When a new movie comes out with special effects or CGI it looks so real you are fooled to believe it's the real deal, but when you go back a few months or even a year it's almost like that Image or effect just pops out and just looks out of place.
Absent I know, right? Just look at the old nasa footage compared to what they make today.
for the same reason the nintendo 64 use to have amazing graphics. the peak technology will always look the best until its old
Great work 🌸🌷🌸🌷
Now let's say they collaborate with NASA. That does raise a few pertinent questions.
Yeah ook
Christopher Nolan is the only director who uses less CGI ,good work man
Sam sharma that’s true. He tries to use as much practical effects as possible. If they’re supposed to be in the ocean, he actually films in the ocean
Yeah but then it ends up looking bland, like in Dunkirk where there is supposedly a massive evacuation which involved many people, machinery and animals. Yet all we see is a mostly empty stretch of beach with men lining up and cowering on or near a pier. Keep in mind, History Buffs brought this to mine and others attention with his video on Dunkirk and the limits it sets on itself by using practical effects.
Quentin Tarantino?
@@tryhardgaminghd3166
If reality is available, then it will always look more convincing than CGI - _obviously._
Like for example, try using CGI to fake the gravity shifts in Fred Astaire's "Ceiling Dance" and make it look just as convincing - you won't be able to do that, because there is nothing to improve there.
The room _actually did_ spin around so that the gravity shifts were _real_ from Fred Astaire's own perspective, and you cannot improve physical reality.
Same thing with the zero gravity scenes in "Apollo 13";
the apparent weightlessness in those scenes was real as well, because they actually were subjected to zero gravity for real by riding a Zero-G airplane.
You cannot improve that either with any amount of CGI whatsoever, because computer animations can never look more real than reality itself.
HUGE RESPECT FOR THE CREWS AND STAFF OF THESE MOVIES!!
_This is amazing!_
In my country there's a director and he doesn't like greenscreens. He prefers using real landscapes as main backgrounds here in Europe :) Looks always great!

Super heros fighting at an airport with explosions everywhere.... god only knows why it was green screened
Wonder why they had to CGI Leipzig/Halle airport instead of simply requesting a shooting day or two there, not that much traffic they wouldn't have found a slot for the film crew...
Because airports are occupied.
The airport scene is one of the most grandiose scenes in the movie, so
1. I'm sure it was a lot more than one or two days of shooting, considering the actors barely even met, so it was shot on separate occasions.
2. It's an airport, it's not exactly cheap to shoot at an airport, potentially crippling its traffic.
3. Background projecting on a green screen is one of the most basic CGI techniques, meaning it's not only easy to make, but it's also pretty realistic, so no drawback on quality, and it's light on the budget.
I AM SUBSCRIBING TO ANYONE WHO SUBSCRIBE BACK MY NOTIFICATION IS ON..
Flight Channel when one airport slows down plane traffic for even an hour it can affect flights worldwide. You would probably need govt approval for that and they would charge a crazy fee. Not worth it. In many cases cgi is cheaper and for materials..cars,.streets etc it's perfect... Many street scenes in the lawyer or business shows etc are cgi cause the hourly fee to shutdown a city street is crazy
it was amaaaaaaaaaaaazing!!!thats why i really love to watch hollywood movies.

ed wyn actually CGI cost a lot more than renting locations and the cost of modelling texturing animation and finally compositing into a scene makes it a lot more expensive.
Always cool to see how they did it. I wish all movies had a behind the scenes of special shots on how they did it...

Does an airport need to be CGI'D? UH YES, yes it does. Do you know how complicated it is to film in or around and active airport?
+THEoWOLF
I guarantee that it's at least as hard to record a scene where someone drives a freaking tank through a city, which by the way was done in "GoldenEye", and it was all physical scenery as well.
Check out the video "GOLDENEYE Bond Tank Sequence" if you want crystal clear proof of that.
In other words - recording a scene at an airport would be no problem at all, they could simply build a model of an airport or use one that is about to close anyway.
You make it sound like it is extremely hard and almost impossible just because they didn't do it in this movie, but movie directors can find solutions to almost anything if they actually want to.
It doesn't have to be active
Also to avoid movie plot leak
And we we're supposed to be suprised that Godzilla couldn't get a whole army fleet of ships to help shoot some scenes lol.

Couple years more and believe me actors will either have to find a different career or live theaters will become really popular once again cause Hollywood is going full CGI they won't need actors anymore
Dirk Diggler We can only hope they simply fade into history...
it's costs more to make a human model with correct rigging to put in place as an actor so your fear will probably not ever happen

why video games don't look as real as movies?
because movie CGI is using far more CPU power than the graphic card of your PC even if it"s a big one... And it needs months of work (for a lot of very specialized people) to make a few seconds of good CGI, when in a game your PC just have a few milliseconds to create the next 60 images all alone... Your PC and a movie production are not playing in the same category !
Ben Whoever And it takes alot of Money!
Ben Whoever if they were as real your computer wouldn't be able to read or render the game because tthe games will require a lot of power and calculations. That is why there are game requirements.
In Movie CGI when scene is create it will be lock and cannot change, we not recreate that scene in movie and it is fix the images creates by CGI in Movie its only play in Sequence while in video game graphics a games have different possibilities in a single scene means CPU works in very fast speed to create 60 images in millisecond to perform command given to it it means cpu change images again & again
CGI will look the same as video games if they were rendered in real-time on common computers.
Very nice explained
"Dressing up an actor in a dino suit looks... well... We all know what that looks like" - 5 seconds later - "they dressed up these actors as half-raptor-half-man-hybrids as a point of reference."
Soon you wont even need actors
There will be actors only ones with taco heads
You don't for some of them
Fully animated movies exist already but the ones with actors seem more popular
Actors will be hologram-like people made with CGI.
Watch the movie called “Simone”. That pretty much explores your idea about a computer generated actor.
Civil War:
It makes perfect sense to CGI the airport scene considering how much destruction actually went on during that fight. An airport is also a busy place, especially one as big as the one portrayed. How much money do you think they would have had to pay to shoot on location EVEN if they were willing to shut it down for a film shooting?
Wolf on Wolfstreet:
It may seem like it's not necessary to CGI simple backdrops, but sometimes the directors of the film do not want the locations to be recognizable, or at least TOO recognizable to real life locations.
Gravity:
As for the props that aren't even there... Not lazy. It would be as if they were calling the prop makers lazy for not building a full size astronauts suit just because they CGed half of it.
Godzilla:
"There might be some CGI that might surprise you. Like when the military attacks the monster, there's nothing there. Just green screens, a fence and some soldiers." --you're right. I was fully expecting that scene to be shot on location with battleships n the background firing actual missiles at a real Godzilla.
Batman v Superman:
Contrary to what the video says... I think most people were not surprised that Batmans suit was mostly CGI. I... really wouldn't expect most humans to wear a suit that clunky and move around at all.
....really dude? you seriously think he's really complaining about there not being a real Godzilla there? THAT'S what you zero in on?
I wouldn't really say he 'zero(ed) in' on it, considering he wrote a little bit about each film
+Amadeus Eisenberg.
I've got a question for you, and I'd like you to answer it without swearing or getting angry, if possible. thanks.
What difference does it make to you?
Say I've got two options for a shot I need. I could go fly across the atlantic to get a couple of shots infront of the statue or liberty to establish a scene is taking place in New york, and then from there on it'll mostly be indoor sets because I'm making the film here in Ireland and once I'm indoors it doesn't really matter as long as it feels like a new york-esque building.
Or I could get those few new york exterior shots on a green screen, and ultimately achieve the exact same effect, but be able to produce my film faster, and more efficiently.
Both give the same end result, so my question is:
Unless doing some via cgi/vfx means actually impedes on the artistic vision and/or is noticeably not real, why does it matter to you?
CG is just another tool in the filmmaker's toolkit, and the thing is, every one of those tools, from the dawn of filmmaking, has only been used to fool you in the same way cg is now.
Practical effects (e.g. the animatronics in jurassic park) were simply there to fool you enough to suspend the disbelief that there's no live dinosaurs.
Before computer set extensions, matte paintings were used (a pane of glass with a new background on it infront of the camera).
the list goes on
"Wolf on Wolfstreet:" Fucking dead
