- I finally tackled the hallway painting project and made a few mistakes along the way. There were quite a few of them, but I've noted 8 of the big mistakes in this video so you can (maybe) learn from them and save yourself a little time. In the end, the project turned out great and I absolutely love the black doors!! If you're on the fence about paining your interior doors black -- DO IT!! You won't regret it!!
Have a great week!

Black interior doors aren't for everyone, but if you're thinking about it watch my video and don't do what I did :) Do it right the first time. I didn't do a lot of research on how to do this process properly so I made quite a lot of mistakes along the way. 8 months later (its now September 2022) I have fixed all of these mistakes and done it right, but I'd definitely recommend not doing it that way. I hope watching this video helps you avoid some of these mistakes.
As a professional painter I have to say thanks for posting this... A+ for determination!!! Prep prep prep then paint
Yes, I agree! I didn’t do a lot of research on that. I honestly thought I’d be done in a few hours. Of course a professional would have been … it took me 3 days 😂
@@NeverNotCleaning no it does take alot of time for anyone. If you remember one thing it's prep work... it's annoying but makes things easier and shows in the finished work... sorry you learned the hard way but what a trooper!!!!
1 thing I've learned --
#1 -- YOU TUBE IT!!!
I have learned more in the last couple of years than in all the
MANY (!) years previous!!
2) Prep, Prep, Prep... Sleep ... Wake up and check the preparations!
(ok-after review, maybe more than 1)
;-)
Like the doors, that vent could have been removed, taken outside, cleaned, and, if necessary, spray painted.
Painting is like cleaning (worse!)-
Anything you clean (paint) makes the surroundings look even worse!
So - as your name says - it's a non-stop process! :-)
Thanks for the vid! Hopefully others will learn from your pain!
Looks Good !
Thank you. Lots of lessons learned the hard way. I recently removed the paint and re painted them and they’re perfect now!!
I was just lazy and crunched for time, so I also skipped the sanding or priming when painting the doors inside the rooms. But I know Im going to regret it. Your doors do look nice, though, and got me thinking about my hallway now. Thanks for the tips!
OMG! I don't mean to laugh at your pain but your video cracked me up only because I am the exact same way! Not taping, no drip cloths, thinking I can get it done in way less time than it takes, and then getting incredibly frustrated with the process - all me. Just know, I feel your pain! Thanks for sharing! All in all your tips were super helpful. Looks like I'll be taking the door off and sanding it first!
Yep. Absolutely 100% accurate.
Lol, I'm laughing because that's me. I painted yesterday and got everything else painted too including my hair! 🤣
@@chanthana7694 and because I didn’t sand them first I’m going to have to re do them … so far 2 months in I have only minor imperfections that a sharpie fixes right away 😂
I don’t know who you are but this procedure is 100% my life! Omg I feel this so much hahahahaha btw tricorn black is great but I chose the caviar black by Valspar & loved it also!
I am almost ready to repaint them the correct way! Wish me luck 😂
This video is the real deal because I can relate to all of those mistakes. 😂
THANK YOU for sharing this video. I work at Sherwin-Williams and try to explain these things to my customers but I think they assume I'm trying to "make a sale" but in reality I'm genuinely trying to save them time and stress lol
They look great ♡
P.s. I love the name of your channel. As a mom of 4, I can relate ;)
Gives me inspiration to paint my doors! Thanks for your transparency about your mistakes - I usually paint like you did - "just do it" and then regret not prepping :)
I am planning to re paint them the right way this weekend. Wish me luck.
Your video was extremely helpful. I have wanted to paint my interior doors black for a while but was hesitant. Like you said, once you start, there's no turning back. So many helpful tips. I love the end results. Thank you
Great thanks. Painting my garage doors now black. This helps!
My neighbors just did theirs and I’m jealous. It looks so good.
I love the contrast of the black against the light grey.
Thank you. Me, too!!!
Lol the day before TG! You are my people! Looks great.
It was not a great decision making day, but turned out great! Still loving them.
Thank you so much for sharing. I’m painting my doors this weekend. I remove my return cover and place it in the tub. Awesome job.
I love how you honestly shared your mistakes. Thank you for such a great video. Everything looks great.!
Thank you. I re did them in July (sanded them first) and they’re even better now!!!
Super relatable. Finish results look great
Thank you. I love them. The work isn’t easy but the payoff is great!!!
When you first said black doors, I was shocked then when I saw the final look I was shocked again. They are beautiful well done
All my friends said the same thing!!! Then they painted theirs black ❤️
So I own a home remodeling and construction company and I always respect people who try to figure it out what ever the task it's a win for me because either they ask me for tips and kill it or they destroy everything while making a mess and find a new respect for my guys and i lol .......you did well
Thank you!!! I researched the best paint / colors but definitely should have realized that they needed to be sanded first. All of the other issues were minor but that was a big one that I seriously regret not doing first. They still look beautiful, but will need to be re done sooner than I'd like.
Thanks for sharing that it took 3 days and that it’s frustrating. That was so comforting.
I thought I’d be done in one. I was wrong.
So humble! I fucking love it! I can tell what an honest and genuine person you are just from these vids. Perfect video for anybody who wants to paint themselves . You shared just about everything you need to know to start a small project
Thank you!! They were hard lessons to learn, but I’ll never make these mistakes again.
Great effort to do it .it looks really nice .I’m looking forward for tips n ideas from you ,well done
Thanks for painting tips! I’ve been too scared to start painting mine black but this has given me the push 😃
I promise you won’t regret it! I also recommend satin finish instead of semi gloss, so make sure you sand!
Thanks for sharing your mistakes. I’m planning to paint all my interior doors white this winter, so I can use your tips!
Yes! Definitely do it. Black is a scary color to paint but I definitely recommend doing it. Everyone that sees them says how nice they look and I didn’t even do that great of a painting job.
Such an inspiring video and I love that you are sharing your mistakes, that how we all learn. Good luck with your painting and thanks for providing inspiration for those of us who love black doors!
Thank you! I really love how they turned out. I definitely learned a few lessons here so when I re painted them I did it right and they’re holding up much better. They don’t have even the tiniest ding or scratch 7 months later.
Wow, that was so cool to watch! Thank you for sharing your project and the issues you encountered. Very helpful. 😊
Thank you. I also have a video recorded recently of how I fixed these mistakes It was NOT fun but definitely better the 2nd time around.
You're amazing! Beautiful job. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you.
Love your video, about to start painting my doors now. Thank you for sharing and your hall and doors look great
Thank you.
It looks great!!! Thanks for the tips!!
Thank you! It’s the most dreaded project but definitely worth it!
Everything came out great! I've taken my return off the wall, clean it and spray painted it white.
I thought about taking it off, too! I just use the same towel and qtips to clean it once a month so it doesn’t get as bad as it was in this video.
They still turned amazing. Great job.
Thank you. I love them.
Commenting again. Watched the entire thing. You’re amazing sis!!
So helpful to know the mistakes (that I surely would have made!) ahead of time. Thank you for sharing.
You’re welcome!! I re painted them 6 months later (the right way) and it made a HUGE difference.
Double thumbs up!
Btw. Your pit is the sweetest thing ever, he’s proud of mama! Lolol
Wow!!! The doors look amazing!!! You did awesome!!
Thank you. 7 months later they’re still hanging in there. I just touched them up with a black sharpie 😂
Looks great! Love snowbound. I think doing the trim with the same paint would have been just as beautiful.
Yes! I agree. If I did it again I’d definitely paint the trim the same color as the doors. Hmmmm… as a matter of fact, I have next week off work LOL
Thank you for sharing! I think you just saved me a ton of headaches! 👍👍❤❤
I definitely should have done more research and learned the hard way. I’m glad you’re able to save yourself from some of these hassles.
Ha ha this sounds EXACTLY like me! Good job! Looks great!
Thank you. 😊
Thanks for the tips friend
I love your doors! Thank you so much for the tips!!!😘
You’re welcome!!! I hope they help make the process a little easier for everyone who’s thinking about doing it!!
THANK YOU! I am about to paint mine black, leaving the inside white and placing long mirrors on the back of each door on the inside. I'm also changing ALL hardware in my house from 1970s brass to brushed nickel (ceiling fans, bath fixtures, door knobs, cabinet hardware and now - door knobs - watching you - I also need to update the hinges! Ugh... So I'll end up taking the doors off for that. I am the first to paint it in place thinking I'm so clever and efficient, but I will be taking them down, sanding and painting while flat - mainly because I have to replace the hinges. You did an amazing job! Thanks for the tips!
Best of luck!!! It sounds like they will be gorgeous when you’re done.
Thank you! I was going to start with tricorn black in my bathroom and doors this week!! I appreciate your tips and your doors look great 👍🏼! Cute pitty , by the way 😍
You’re going to love the black doors. Also side note: if I did it again I’d paint the door trim black also.
It's soooo nice that you have pointed out your mistakes, saving others time and mistakes themselves, very selfless of you, well done, i am definitely doing all my doors black as i totally fell in love with yours, i'm also going to tackle all my window frames, and french doors, yours looks so much classier than plain white.
I agree! I should have also painted the door frames black. Maybe I’ll tackle that project soon…
Thank you sooo much i loooove how real this was ! It rare to see the real deal this would be me alllll the way 😅 IT CAME OUT SO BEAUTIFUL ❤ !
Thank you.
Just came across this video today....wish I saw it months ago when I too painted my basement doors black. My trick for keeping the door stable while painting is to use a small paint can to stabilize the door in place and painting the bottom corner at the end. (I refused to take down my doors) This was an excellent tutorial for DIYers. Thanks so much for sharing. BTW, your hallway and doors look great and you saved a lot of money!!
Thank you so much!!! I also wish I had done a little more research myself. Next time they’ll be perfect!!!
Love the lessons from this video.. thanks for sharing.. you rock
Thank you. 😘
This vid was so helpful, thank you! I will be doing this as well soon in my home.
I’m getting more motivated to re do mine. Even though I didn’t sand them (which is a huge mistake), they’ve held up better than expected. Just a few dots and scrapes here and there. Nothing a black sharpie can’t fix 😂
I was thinking to myself I don't need the tarps either to paint my bedroom.... that has carpet... lol thanks for sharing your struggles! Lol Adding them to my Amazon cart now 😉
Preparing before any job for me, is quite satisfying. I treat it as a separate job from the main project. I find myself preparing for the prep! Then I'll go over it again, tweaking all the fine areas. Then, that's it for the day! Lol. I love black paint on trim, baseboards, crown molding. In my opinion, black will never go out of fashion. It's seems to give everything a classy look.
I agree with the black trim! If I did this project again I would also paint the door trim black.
Very informative and helpful! Thanks!
Thank you.
Thanks for this one!! Needed to hear these 😂 I’m embarking on my own black door adventures🎉
You won’t regret it! I get lots of compliments.
Oh my these doors in black look beautiful!
Thank you. 😊 I love them. SATIN finish especially so they’re still durable but not shiny.
Really good points, great video, and good job. They look great. I can tell you’re not afraid of work. Same as me. I’ll get in there and work, but I also will look for short cuts, immediately regretting them.
Learning the hard way - in my option - is the best way to never make those same mistakes again.
You are hilarious! I love this video!!
🤭 Thank you
Thank you for being honest with your process and I still think it came out looking nice. I use a cloth covered butter knife with a bit of cleaning solution to clean my air vents. Hugs💕✨
That’s a great idea!!! I need to clean them as I type this. I’ll try that tomorrow!!
Great tips! Thanks for posting. 😊
You’re welcome!!! And Thank you.
You’re brave to put this out there and show us all your lessons learned. I was yelling at you the whole time during this video😅 but hey you live n you learn right!
Yes! I absolutely did learn the hard way. Where were you when I started this project? 😂🤣😂
Hi! I really love your channel! I’ve been begging my hubby to let me paint out doors black!! I love how yours turned out! I’m gonna go back and start re-begging 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you!! Search pictures on the internet and show him how great it’ll look!! And don’t forget to sand!! That’s the biggest mistake I made and I’m paying for it this weekend because I am re doing them the right way.
It came out beautiful in the end❤
Yes! I love them. Thank you.
Looks great, along as you learned from your mistakes and don't make them anymore. 👌
Yes! Agreed. I honestly learned a lot that I will never do again. Including listening to my husband 😂
thank you for the tips!!!
Great job👍👍
Thank you.
I love it !!!
Thank you!! ☺️
Thank you. great video and thank you for all the infromation.
You’re very welcome!!!
AWESOME video!
Thank you.
I want to give you props for doing the painting your self way to go I love it. I think that you did a great job I wish I can get my wife to help with stuff around the home.
Thank you. I enjoy projects like this. It’s hard work but worth it.
Thank you for sharing this!
You’re welcome! I hope it saved you a little bit of trouble. 🚪
I think it looks fabulous and I love your furbaby!
Thank you. I have 2 and they’re the best dogs ever. 🥰
@@NeverNotCleaning I have a blue nose and I think they are the best too.
Just the video I was looking for
Thank you!!!
Lol you sound like me...I love it. I did exactly what you did and now I'm doing a little of everything but still not getting it done. Thank you for all your tips. You are great!
Lots of lessons learned here 😂
Great job
Thank you. It was a lot of work but definitely worth it.
I love the black doors 😍
Thank you!!!
Super-helpful video!
Thank you.
You’re amazing mama! Love from Hawaii!!
All of my doors are black and we love them. I’m about to paint our double patio doors to match
I had my back sliding doors replaced about 3 years ago and regret not getting black (they’re white) 😟 I still need to do my front door too so maybe I’ll include that in another video.
Great effort 👌
Thank you.
Your hallway look very nice!!!. Even with all the "mistakes " lol
Thank you. 🥰
I know this was 10 months ago, but great job and I liked you put everything in the drop down box.. Immediately subscribed. Thank you soon much for showing us your mistakes.
Thank you!!! I also RE painted them this past July and did them the right way. They’re holding up fantastic now!!!
Thank you for this! 🙏🏾
It was a hard lesson so if it helps even one person avoid these mistakes I’m happy!!!
Great Job
Thank you.
Subscribed!
Good video, thank you. Can't believe the dog didn't get paint on her. My guys always manage to get a smudge or two.
I love you. You are hilarious!
🥰 Thank you.
We just did our doors.. yours came out great!! Removing the doors def helps but I didn’t feel like going through the process of making sure they line back up properly. Another tip.. I underestimated the amount of doors in my house lol… but you are right, once you commit you have to commit lol
I’ve been thinking about sanding mine and doing them again (better) but they’re still holding up pretty well. I might put it off another month
@@NeverNotCleaning nice!! If you do decide too and have to paint them over, you can also try semi gloss instead if satin since it takes a little more of beating.
I would 1000% do satin again. But my previous doors were off white semi gloss so not sanding them first was a huge mistake. I absolutely love the satin finish.
@@NeverNotCleaning in our last house I did a satin light gray in the basement that came out great on the doors! lol but this time we have two little friends that tend to live their best life around this house so I opted for semi gloss this time around.. but you are right the satin finish looks amazing
Your Grandmother's painting is beautiful.
Thank you so much!!! ❤️
So,
1. Take doors off frame
2. remove handles.
3. sand doors
4. put down plastic (ideally paint these in a garage)
5. buy proper tools to paint doors
I like the outcome though. They give the hallway depth
I agree with everything you said!! When I re painted them I did all of that except take them off. I took one off and realized that this old house is crooked so I left the rest on because I knew they’d never go back the same. I also did this in November originally and it was too cold to paint outside. Check out my video on how I fixed all of these mistakes ☺️
If you drip paint. Let it dry and it will come right off with your nails. It especially works well on the vinyl floor planks
Your video helped me a LOT! Thank you so much! I had planned on painting my doors while still on the hinges but, after watching your video, I’ve decided to take them off. Also, the part about sanding them down first was helpful. I thought, since I was painting them black, it wouldn’t matter. Question- What type of hooks were those you used to hang your mirror and pictures?
The bran name is monkey hooks but I get the generic ones on Amazon. They’re fantastic. I’ll link them now if they’re not already there!!!
I had planned to paint my doors and frames matte black and watching this video I know I can't make any mistakes.
Also, the color stands out very well. I am very fond of the color black and all my furniture is dark.
Same! I think the doors and frames both being black would look great!! The 2nd time I painted them I did it right (this past July) and I’m happy to say they’re holding up SO MUCH BETTER!!!
@@NeverNotCleaning Yes, I just saw your second video commenting that maybe you made more than 8 mistakes. Sanding and cleaning the surface is a priority. And give it 3 hands since they touch and scratch too much.
Excellent advice!!! I sanded my garage/laundry room door twice plus liquid sandpaper. So far it doesn’t have a single ding or scratch and it’s heavily used.
Beautiful sister ❤
Thank you.
Thanks for sharing
Visit my channel dear
I think I want to do this but leave gold hinges and gold door knobs. I'm just scared to for some reason, lol. Yours looks great! My walls are agreeable gray, but I will definitely touch up the frames and crown molding.
That would look gorgeous!!! I have found that having black doors and black door knobs is hazardous at night. Especially if you think the door is open and try to walk through it in the dark 😂 gold would look really great!!
Very helpful
Thank you.
I love black doors. Thinking about painting mine black. But I will definitely take them off and out to the garage to do them. I've made enough mistakes to learn and paint the right way. Short cuts will only lead to long and frustrating paint jobs. It's not worth it.
100% agree! I removed all the paint and re did mine the right way in July. It was a lot of work, but they’re so much better now! I definitely do not recommend painting anything the way I painted them last November. 😂🤣
Learned a lot from your video. Thanks for all of the tips.
You’re very welcome! They’re holding up pretty good for having people, babies and dogs touching them all the time but I plan to sand and re paint them soon. They’ll be perfect after that!! 🤗
Love this video!
Looks great!
I can see myself doing all of the “boo boos!” 🤪🤣
New Sub 👍
Thank you. 🥰
Use press and seal on the floors next time - it works perfect. Get big rolls from a big box store.
That’s genius!!!! I definitely will!!!
I certainly can appreciate all your hard work but I was disappointed that you didn’t give us a good view of doors once the work was finished.
Hi, Marianne: I included pictures of the finished doors at the end of the video. I am happy to include more detail if you’d like to see something specific. Let me know ….
Thanks for the info, I'm building a house and the interior door will need to be painted. Black was what I was thinking so this was a very helpful video.
Brand new doors, painted the right way will look so great. 😍
nice... I love the look. I plan to do mine this weekend.. wish me luck!! You mentioned Satin not semi-gloss, why? And not doubting you, just ensuring I get the right kind of paint.
Satin is more of a matte finish and not shiny. It’s less durable than semi gloss but very beautiful. If you have small kids semi gloss is more suitable. Also, SAND SAND SAND. Plan on at least 3 coats and let dry completely between each coat. You might also research chalk paint. I had several people suggest that after hearing about my issues
I'm about rdy to paint my new home including the hallway. Like you, I decided on snowbound. My accent color will be barnwood plank. It's a soft brown. It seems to go well with snowbound.
Was planning on painting the doors and or doorframe in the hallway.
What was your reason for not using snowbound?
I didn’t use it because it was a satin finish. My existing trim was semi gloss so when I painted the first one I realized I needed different paint. If I had that color in semi gloss I definitely would have used it. I really like it a lot.
Snowbound isn’t grey. It’s white. I have it all over my house. It’s is cool toned though. Tricorn black is the color I want to use on my kitchen cabinets. You did a good job!
I guess because everything else in my house is gray it looked like a light gray to me. But yes, it’s a very pale off white color. I wish I had the energy to do my whole house that color. I love it.
Thanks for the paint advice. Oh yes… air beignet nasty but wish you would inspire my wife. If I don’t bring up the various little pieces of detail that need to be clean, my wife would never notice and would never volunteer to clean them if she noticed. I have to bribe her to partner up or choose among many thing needing attention, which is a pain.
There’s a lot of things we walk by every day and don’t notice. But once I see it, I clean it. And it only took a couple min. Then I’m done for another month.
