When are my seedlings ready to plant out?

- How to tell when those tiny seedlings have grown enough to put in the ground safely?
The best time varies a lot through the year, and according to what vegetable it is. In this little video I give a brief overview of some guiding parameters. Such as plant size, how much space remains in the module tray (too little causes leggy seedlings), and how much compost is still available for roots to grow.

While I have no problem watch an hours long video from you, I truly appreciate the way you make your shorts about another learning opportunity chock-full of useful info not dangling a carrot to make us watch a longer video. Much respect to you and your team.
I am glad you enjoy them 🙂 thank you
I'm going to stop saying thank you at some point, but, until that time, thank you
😂 you are very welcome
I could listen to Charles read a phone book. The gardening info is a bonus!
Very kind, thank you 🙂
Thank you for for being the coolest gardener learning a whole bunch have a lovely day ☘️.
Thank you for your kind words Donna
Brilliant Charles, Size, root ball and legginess ❤
These starts are crazy beautiful
Loving the shorts! Keep them coming, if possible ☺️
Thank you, Charles ! It's always something I ask myself every season 😅
How timely! My first year of growing veg. Wasn't sure whether to transplant or not. I can keep them indoors (avoiding the rain) another couple of days! Thanks Charles.
You are welcome, I look forward to hearing how you get on 🙂
@@CharlesDowding1nodig I certainly will 🙏
I bring out my plants whenever sun comes out. It's a little bit cold but sunny and slightly windy.
Great tips Charles, thank you
My pleasure Ted
I just noticed the crop of veg growing on you jacket. When were those planted out?
😂
4th weather conditions. Especially with sensitive plants like cucumbers, tomatoes, courgettes etc 😊
Yes and no. I'm not considering those plants in March because I have not sown them yet and if you tailor your sowing dates to your likely weather conditions, this should not be too much of a problem, and you can use covers as well. When they're ready, they need to go in
Valuable information, thank you Charles.
You are very welcome
One thing I've found germinating indoors is that the cooler a room you have with sun-facing windows, the better. Legginess is broadly avoided if you can keep plants at no more than 16C inside once they've germinated. And if it's not raining, being outside at 8-13C during the day doesn't seem to do any harm either for early sowings.
I also came to that conclusion. I had plants intentionally crowded as an experiment planted outside and even though there were quite a lot that stretched to cover every niche of light, nothing ever produced leggy seedlings like indoors, even when planted under shade. Some were left short and stunted, but not leggy. Some grew very long stems, but still produced a decent, less attractive to look at plant with a long, but still strong stem. None became anything close to the leggy seedlings I had indoors. Perhaps the warm temperature and lack of airflow makes it think it's crowded under taller plants on otherwise sunny days. If that's the case, it could elongate to catch more sun to grow better later and support itself by resting its vulnerable stem on surrounding stronger plants for support.
Great advice! Please make a video about how to prevent cutworms or grubs from eating the young plants after being transplanted. This is my biggest problem. Thank you!🙏🏻
No dig helps, there are few here
Hold up. Did I just hear you say you transplant radishes?! Oooh. I need to try this.
Yes, see my advice here www.charlesdowding.co.uk/education/multisowing
Very good ❤
Thanks 😄
That’s a question I asked myself multiple times. At your suggestion to put them in their beds quite small I will try it to put them in earlier this year snd see how they’ll do.
Thank you!
Go for it Dara, I wish you success
@@CharlesDowding1nodig Thank you Charles.
The radish I put in our raised bed a few days ago quite small are doing very well. It‘s amazing what strength they have in such a little size and even in the cool.
❤
💚
Charles what about outdoor soil temperature?
Yes indeed, what about it! We choose our sowing dates to fit the climate, then once you have seedlings, you can't do much about the soil temperature when they are ready. I never measure it because I can't do much about it, also measuring it now doesn't tell you what it will be in two days time, in fact we are forecast warmer weather.
Really enjoying your videos!
Which seeds do you germinate in your greenhouse and which seeds do you germinate on a windowsill (for a start)?
Thanks, and everything I sow in the greenhouse or on windowsills is for starts
Whoever chooses the thumbnail pics for these videos does Charles dirty every single time. Seriously whoever you are, stop chosing the worst pictures of him for the thumbnail picture 😅
Thanks Deb! For short videos, one cannot choose a thumbnail.
They are all Google's choice! 😂
@@CharlesDowding1nodig google did you dirty then haha! Handsome man, terrible thumbnails 😉
😂
Does anyone else just drop seeds in the ground? I never start them elsewhere than where they'll grow for the season.
For sure that works! Just it's a later harvest in some cases, more pest damage sometimes
I bought these plug trays and it was a huge fail for me... Not sure why
Sorry to hear!
Do you wait until all or seeds have germinated before you bring them out to the greenhouse? Im having a few plants bolt before some plants have germinated so i put them in my greenhouse to slow the bolting, is this correct or ahould i wait?i can see that all your plants are the same height, mine not so much 😅.
Also im absolutely loving your module trays!
Thanks and bring out when say three quarters are germinating
the best time of day for sun is the morning and the evening... the rest is just heat...
Not here it isn't! We are 51° latitude and every bit of sun is precious. I'm guessing you are not well attitude, and that makes a lot of difference ☀️
