And did those feet in ancient time
    walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
    on England's pleasant pastures seen?
    And did the countenance divine
shine forth upon our clouded hills?
    And was Jerusalem builded here
    among those dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
    till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant Land.
Plenty of ways to interpret Blake's powerful poem, set to music so well by Hubert Parry an d orchestrated so well by Elgar! IMO its a cry for spiritual freedom. But, with with "Land of Hope and Glory" and "I vow to thee my country", one of the three most powerful musical pieces in the English language. Thank you again, Sweetheart, for choosing this, and for your lovely reaction.

There is nothing like the British mass choirs and mass audience participation whether English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish. Check out the Welsh male voice choirs like Newtown and District Male Voice Choir at the Albert Hall singing "Calon Lan" and "Cwm Rhondda"; or watch the Royal British Legion at the Albert Hall. Tears will flow it is so emotional.

God Save the Queen and God Save the King are actually the same song. We just swap the one word depending upon who's the monarch. Since 1953, it was Queen, since her passing in 2022, it's now God Save the King.
    Hope this helps! 😊

What would I like to see next? I would love you to react to 'The Bands of HM Royal Marines /Hans Zimmer/Gladiator'. They are on the Royal Horse Guards Parade Ground. The Ceremony 'Beating Retreat' is finished, the sun beginning to set - it's been a long day for the Marines and they decide to finish the Event with their version of 'Gladiator'. I thought it was beautiful.

While "God Save the King/Queen" is the British national anthem, "Jerusalem" should be the English one. "Bring me my bow of burning gold, bring me my arrows of desire, bring me my spear, oh cloud unfold, bring me my chariot of fire" William Blake sure knew how to write a poem!

Jerusalem is a hymn and we sang in church just last week. The Albert Hall where this Last Night of the Proms is broadcast from holds 8,000 and is the hottest ticket in town. You submit your name and they draw tickets out. Because it is so popular they screen it on large screens in various parks/stadiums across the land and they draw super large crowds, we Brits love our traditions and getting together to celebrate our country. Love pride and peace rule on that night.

It seems quite a few people in the comments don't quite understand the meaning of this song. It is about building a better society, one based up equality. It was often sung after Labour Party conferences (along with the Red Flag) but strangely never at the pro-monarchy Tory conference.

I prefer this version, more fitting for the entirety of this island and any semblence of unity it still has to-day.

The Difference, I think, between English and general national music is that English national music is a bit more about freedom and hope than about nationalism. But to understand why it's so good you must understand that much of it was composed by Edward Elgar. Edward Elgar is not only Britain's greatest composer but the only British composer rated as being one of the great composers alongside people like Beethoven, the last of the great composers to emerge to date. He is very important in of multiple areas of work, his music he wrote after WW1 defines the tragedy of that war in it's form. He even invented the modern music album with his ENIGMA variations (a fantastic starting point to jump into). We even mourn to NIMROD from ENIGMA while the rest of the World mourns to Adagio because it's a movement wistfully, nostalgically remembering a group of Elgar's friends. When we mourn we prefer to remember those we lose more than concentrating on how much we lament their loss.
