3. Wingfoiling Session (Gong HIPE First 5'11)

  • Today was my third Wing Foil session. It was the first session that wasn't just challenging; it was also the first session where I managed to go upwind instead of just floating downwind.
Compared to the last time I went out, the major difference was that I positioned my feet slightly better. I used to have a tendency to shoot up on the water and then crash. But today, I adjusted my foot placement forward, which resulted in a much smoother flow.
Another distinction from the first two times was that there was much more wind today (9-11 m/s). In short, it made the whole experience much easier. I didn't exert any effort to balance myself today, nor did I need to pump the wing. The wing also acted as better support for me, which is why it was also easier to get up and ride quickly.
In the final part of my session, I consistently managed to stay up and fly for ten to twenty seconds at a time. I'm quite impressed with how well you are able to go upwind, compared to windsurfing, where I find it to be more challenging.
All in all a great session with a great feel og progression.

Thank you so much for the tip. I will definitely give a more centralized position a try the next time I’m out. I’m so glad you took the time to actually write this. 🙏🏻

Yes, front foot toes should be past the centreline to allow full adjustment of your weight side to side.
If only your back foot is across the centreline, you can only roll the board away from you with back foot pressure. This will pitch up the nose and breach or stall the board

I'm by no means an expert but I'm doing wing foil lessons. I think from what i was told that if you put from foot more centered you Will be more stable. Keep working hard!!!

Sounds like a couple bits in the comments dont know how to look after inflatable boards. The Gongs Hipes have been fantastic for me.

I also inflated at around 17 psi, as I think it can get a bit wobbly at 15 😀 just made a small video about the progression in the first 10 hours:

Hi :) what did you buy? also a GONG First set?
Firstly, I have noticed huge progress from sessions 3-5. The first two sessions were hard and everything is new, but don't give up. The body learns quickly and on my 5th session I was up and flying for several minutes at a time, over 1 km in fact.
Foot position has been super important for me. I experience the best stability with the front foot slightly to the heel side and the back foot opposite to the toe side.
And as many others write: wind is your friend. I find it's by far the easiest to learn when I'm well powered up. (7-9 m/s).

Tu as un problème d'assiette , tu appuyes que sur un côté du foil.
Deux solutions soit ton pied avant se recentre , soit ton pied arrière s'excentre pour appuyer de part et d'autre du foil.

Utter rubbish this Hipe board. First one the seams came apart after 1 month of light use. 2nd the valve broke so can't be used.
