- Life is dark and full of terrors. Some say that the world has been getting worse and worse all the time. Me? Well I'd like to think that either way there are some anime out there that help lift our spirits or at least make us feel less bad about our situations, and I wanted to showcase a few today.

Man I remember GTO got me through a MEAN breakup lol.
Something about watching Onizuka bring people up just lifted my spirits.
I have even watched the movies.
You may watch a bit similar Japanese show- "Dragon Zakura"
Esesem ssm Never seen it. But I will check it out
One show that really lifted my spirits was Ah! My Goddess. GTO is great though. I miss those old comedy anime from the late 90s to early 2000s that also taught you a lesson. Golden Boy did the same for me. And Irresponsible Captain Tylor.
We all have a special place for GTO in our hearts.
Because Onizuka is the life teacher we never knew we needed.
Life's gotten me down more than enough times and I've treated anime as a shining beacon of hope too many times. Thank you for showing me these choices.
life cannot get you down, if you are already at rock bottom
Here you are again
S stands for
@@cocdeadlydudes2247 S stands for Shit
You should watch more anime than watching videos on CZcams.
“Tanaka-kun is always listless” is like the comedic version of what you’re recommending, as it’s about the lazy life of Tanaka and how he tries to get lazier (and somewhat fails). It’s super simple and I love it, I would recommend to anyone looking for a calming, yet still pretty funny, anime (like Barakamon but less artist-breakdowns).
Mestayoku Technically it is, but in actuality it is just “Haven’t you heard? I’m Sakamoto” with flaws.
Mestayoku Handa-kun is but a sheep in lion’s clothing, accidentally putting up the facade of Sakamoto, but as you mentioned, anyone truly near Sakamoto’s level would have no discernible flaws.
I watched Laid Back Camp when I got sick, and I swear that when I finished the anime, I suddenly got healed, I didnt feel sick anymore, THATS THE POWER OF CAMPING YALL!!!
😁😂
Going through the same experience rn haha, the fact I'm watching it while sick makes it even better.
Great timing,i needed this list!
same here! have a great day!
@@HotTakeHQ thank you, have a great day/night !😊
I didn't watch the others but I highly recommend Aria- music is extremely chill, no drama, it has a character similar to Belldandy who's got a black belt in "ara ara" (the innocent kind).
I always need this list
GTO is one of the best anime I have EVER watched. It's just so unique & you are always thinking the storyline is not going to the right direction, it's WROOOOOOONG. But.......
yissss Barakamon is my official Feel Good Anime, especially in summer
I finished it in one day, and I was so sad it finished I watched the sequel handa-kun, it has almost nothin to do with barakamon but has the same people and handa is still the mc, but it’s fun to watch the foreshadowing that happens
Laid-back Camp is a great recommendation. It's one of those shows where wholesomeness is evident in every episode. Plus the OST is amazing which really adds a great touch.
And the backgrounds are great! I read a few chapters of the manga and most panels have no background at all. It really takes you out of it, when you know the anime.
"99 ePiSoDeS iS nOt SoMeThInG yOu CaN tAcKlE iN a DaY" Are you challenging me right now, dear comrade?
It's quite literally not, being over 40 hours of content.
@deathknight75 You must be fun at parties
@@heckingbamboozled8097 I mean, the kind that don't try to break space time, sure.
It is technically possible, just watch at 2.5x speed
Just know the show doesn't actually conclude anything and just leaves off in the middle of the story at 99 episodes and hasn't had any new episodes in 5 years
I used to watch a lot of slice of life and slow-paced anime when I was feeling down. They really helped. ☺️
Well, initially 90% of the Sol anime and manga were designed for that. It is sad that, by now, all this has basically come down to huge doses of moe, waifu bait and otaku pandering
March comes in like a lion really helped me. For some reason oregairu helped me too but I wouldnt recommend it to help with depression lol.
I made the mistake of watching Your Lie in April a couple years ago, not knowing anything about it. I just thought "Oh, a music anime? This should nice and heartwarming". Then the tears came. Lol,
@@leeworley6727 Oregairu is shit, I hate love triangles, its not relaxing at all and does the opposite of relaxing.
@@calipo5110 i mean if you think about it
Its more than a love triangle
When I went through a rough time in my life, "Welcome to the NHK" helped me. Seeing people fail harder than me and still somehow overcoming their problems gave me hope and motivation to fight. Its a dangerous recommendation because the overall tone of the show is rather dark and depressing and its humour is rather special, but I think its worth mentioning for those 37 people who it'll help.
All good stuff.
I'd throw in Mushishi
Some might find it boring, but its highly soothing and atmospheric.
Hououin Kyouma i got to third episode and left it not because it was boring but because that anime is not meant to be watched in one sitting there is so much you want to absorb
Yeah, I actually haven't even finished it 🙈
@lone wolf just watch the 4th episode and then decide to drop it or not
Musayeb Hossain oh i did not drop it, no no, for that anime you need to be in a special state of mind.
Well I guess it is an episodic show that shouldn’t be marathoned
Here’s the list, there are some streams for these shows in the description:
- Aria The Animation
- Great Teacher Onizuka
- Space Brothers
- Barakamon
- Non Non Biyori
- Laid Back Camp
Two series that work for me are Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun and Fruits Basket. Gekkan Shoujo is very good at making me forget all the bad things. It allows me to live in a world without my problems where everything is just hilarious misunderstandings. Fruits Basket, on the other hand, doesn't make you forget your problems but it makes you face them in a healthy way. It gives the courage to try to become a better person. The courage to work with your problems. I recommend it to other anxious people, people with low self-esteem and people who have suffered from abuse.
Watch march comes in like a lion
It seems pretty similar to fruits basket (i haven't seen fruits basket)
I love Nozaki kun and Furuba try Natsume's book of friends if you want something relaxing and wholesome
Mushi-Shi is an anime I consistently go to when I'm feeling down. It has a very stoic approach to each episode that helps remind me that much of life is simply out of my control.
Definitely keeps you grounded and appreciative of life. We get to see different peoples lives told in every episode, their upheavals, joys, and all sorts of emotions. One of my favorite is the white bamboo episode.
Non Non Biyori was the anime that made me love Slice of Life. I couldn't help but smile the entire time I watched it, and it boosted my mood almost immediately
I think the best type of anime to watch when your feeling down or depressed are the comedic ones cause at least you can get a laugh out of it.
There are two thing you can do when you're down.
#1 Watch Gintama, so you can pick yourself up.
#2 Read Berserk. You'll be traumatised enough to not feel down.
Or watch Monster to know how psychological thriller should be!
@@justaguy00000 damn right.
Lord Johan Liebert!
@@pragyan394 it's not Gintama. It's goatama
No... read goodnight pun pun
Oddly enough I watched NHK when I was down and I got so emotional at it that it helped me somewhat. It didn't make me happy or sad just got to me on such a personal level that I can't really explain.
I know that feeling.
Steins;Gate did the same thing to me.
March comes in like a lion and oregairu did that for me.
Yes! NHK was perfect for me to get out of my NEET phase. Was like a good therapy session.
NHK saved my life.
If I can reccomend another relaxing show, Mushi-shi is the one that does it for me. I always reach the closing credits not even realizing that we had reached even 15 mins. It just kind of hypnotizes you and takes you on a journey until it is over.
With anxiety, life is always a trainwreck for me so recommending such charming tales are uplifting so anime is amazing!
Once, I had a horrible day. By bedtime, I felt so down. So, got onto CZcams and start watching videos. Fate would have it, Non Non Biyori was in my recommendations. Not even being my usual taste (action, harem, adventure), I soon found myself bingeing half of season one. Had to force myself to go to bed. That show had me from the first scene and I will always appreciate it
Its available on youtube?
No matter how many times i rewatch Non non biyori, i never get bored
It does have a completely different pacing of time :)
A wholesome video made with the intent of making others happy through the medium of animation, I love this.
For inspiring anime to pick you up when it seems like you might as well not bother with life I HIGHLY recommend March Comes in Like a Lion. Every episode was like the show was personally telling me to do the best I can. To be the best person I can be. I can't think of any other show that was as uplifting and inspiring. At least for me.
(also this video has convinced me to finally pick up Space Brothers)
I recommend Flying Witch and Teasing Master Takagi-san.
Definitely Flying Witch (we need a second season of that). Also Azumanga Diaoh (I'm surprised Ark didn't mention that) and Shirokuma Cafe.
@@zUJ7EjVD they ARE in middle school. That could be why he's such a tool. There is a manga based on them being adults.
@@zUJ7EjVD I'm just saying you can't just write off a character. There's context to every character.
@@zUJ7EjVD if you say so.
Aye Flying witch is awesome :D
Sound of the Sky
K-On!
YuruYuri
I would not call Sound of the Sky a slice of life. Yes, there are many everyday situations, but the central theme of the anime is still the advantage of a pacifist partnership over military fraternities. According to the original idea, SoL should relax and bring "healing" entertainment, and not make you think about high matters.
@@andrewfantome4020 it sounds like your describing the iyashikei genre. Iyashikei shows are specifically about relaxing and healing the audience, or at least that is the goal.
@@danielsjohnson Yep, CGDCT was originally one of the subgenres of this. At least 5-6 years ago.
@@andrewfantome4020 Sound of the Sky is everything a slice of life is. Did you just look at a review?
It's literally nicknamed 'military K-ON!'.
@@ianrandolph6436 I wouldn't say anything if I didn't watch the original anime. Most jokes about military K-ON! comes from people who either didn't watch the show or remembered from it only the character design.
Slice of life anime is the saddest anime. It makes you feel good while watching it, then you suddenly realise how messed up the real world is.
So glad you're showing love to GTO it's one of my favorite animes. I rewatch it all the time
I love Laid Back Camp. I keep rewatching it and listening the theme songs over and over again...
Gurren Lagann makes you feel like you can accomplish literally anything you set your mind to. 100% recommended to those who feel like their dreams and goals are impossible.
“Whether it’s impossible or laughable, great men find paths to victory. If there’s a wall, we break it down. If there isn’t a path, we’ll create one with these hands. The hearts magma burns with flames!”
Just reading this dialogue pumped me up. Gurren Lagann is one of the most inspiring anime ever
I swear to god, if Yuru Camp isn't on this list...
EDIT: Good for you. GOOD. FOR. YOU.
XD
Lol 😂😂
Just wanted to take a second to say I appreciate how you're such a positive influence in a community that can unfortunately sometimes feel very toxic. Thanks for all your videos and the personality you bring to anitube!
If I had to recommend any others: Senko the Helpful Fox, Tanaka-kun is Always Listless, and Acchi Kocchi
Haven't watched senko yet, what is it like?
Acchi Kocchi is such a sweet one ☺️
Anime is something that I truly love and has helped me face the reality of life as I would hope it is for other people sometimes it takes a video like this to remind me of that
I'm SO so glad Laid-Back Camp and Barakamon is on this video, they are the first shows that come to mind for this topic. I personally relate A LOT to these two shows (as someone who is currently working in the outdoor industry and as someone with a creative mind respectively)!
Shows I would certainly add is:
*A Place Further than the Universe* - never have I given a show 10/10 so early during its run, I was hooked on it from the get-go and had completely forgotten about the real world all the way until the very end ... which was immediately followed with a severe case of withdrawal.
*My Roommate is a Cat* - it has similar themes to Barakamon and is a very wholesome show from start-to-finish, especially with the relationship between the character Subaru and the stray cat he befriends Haru.
*Sweetness and Lightning* - for obvious reasons.
*Usagi Drop (anime)* - say what you will about the manga's timeskip, the content that was covered in the anime was masterful.
i recommend Ponyo. its really chill and feel good. love it.
Loved Usagi drop (Bunny Drop) too!
Dont Be fooled by the anime, it gets real after that...ask the manga readers
@@gerdanbombales There is no manga adaption you can't fool me.
@@DoktorJammified well what Im daying is the anime is wholeome while if you read ahead in the manga.....
Im so happy to see Barakamon, such an underrated anime and manga
10/10 list, the only thing on here I’ve not seen in non non biyori. Totally going to rewatch GTO now.
Oh you're totally missing out! Just dive into Non Non right away and you'll thank me later! :D
My go-to's are:
Grand Blue
Haikyuu
Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (my life as an otaku)
Last ones probably translated as : love is hard for an otaku
(Just clarifying cause ppl can get to know it's genre)
As a huge Iyashi-kei fan, I appreciate the inclusion of Aria, Barakamon, Non Non Biyori, and especially Yuru Camp.
I would just add Tamayura to the list, for good measure.
I don't know why, but I find Mushishi very relaxing to watch, but it's more of a bitter sweet road trip.
Aria. Definitely. The late Steven Den Beste, who introduced me to anime and became a mentor to me, called these "healing anime."
Sometimes i feel sad that your videos take a long time to come out, but when I watch them, I understand the care you put into them. :) And of course, I knew Laid Back Camp would be number one... I would also recommend that. As well as my favorite comedy out there: Hinamatsuri! That one always makes me feel better when I'm down...
I'd of recommended the top 2 as well for anyone wanting a relaxed, calm yet adorably filled experience where you get to watch, what are, to me, essentially warm hugs on a screen, with two of my favourite girls, Renge and Chiaki.
I feel like Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! fits perfectly in this list. It's just so chill and laid back. The plot barely as any importance, because its not something extravagant and big like saving the world. Its making anime with your friends. Doing what you always dreamed abour doing with friends. And the girls aren't overly sexualized (theyre minors) and their voices dont sound like characters of alvin and the chipmunks
Please do a part 2 of this for those of us who have watched all of these! Absolutely loved Space Brothers! Never would have watched it if not for you and so glad I stuck with it.
Clannad believe it or not actually really helps. It sure helped me after I had to end a long term relationship due to my other’s drug issues, costing me a lot of my friends at the time. Watching Clannad made me appreciate what I still had in my family and friends that always stuck by me. And when Tomoya was in pain, you could share the pain with him, making you feel like you aren’t alone. So despite it’s reputation as the saddest anime ever, it really helped me when I was in a dark place
Before watching this, here are my favorites:
Hidamari Sketch, the best of the best medicine when life got to you.
Sakura Quest
Yuru Camp
Silver Spoon for the lighter cases.
Mentioning GTO, my favorite anime, and Barakamon, not far behind, in a single video... Best birthday gift I could've asked for.
my two therapeutic go-to shows are:
1) Escaflowne, which is a show about a girl who is so depressed or disconnected from the world that she is swept up in her own story. The music and the scenery is good enough to take you to another world, and the blu ray release is astounding!
2) Welcome to NHK. Complete opposite end of the spectrum. NHK is about someone who just can't face the world, but keeps being confronted with it. I find the main character to be somewhat relate-able as his coping mechanisms are not often constructive or anything to take pride in, and yet he keeps finding ways to keep moving, or at the very least keep existing when everything seems hard and pointless. Certainly not for everyone, and at times a bit on the nose about being a show about getting through depression. But for me has been a faithful standby on those days where I just wish the world would go away.
I havent even heard of any of the shows on this list... looks like I have a few things to find now.
Cannot agree more with Laid Back Camp. Literally the most chill show I've ever watched, never felt so comfortable in my life while watching anime. A close second however, would be Flying Witch. Very similar vibes.
Agreed!
Arkada, thank you so much for this.
Some story : I used to be very much into Internet and anime and was living like a hikkikomori (much to my own personal dismay) for 2 years. I got so much into anime, seasonal anime and became a bitter cynic.
Today, I'm in a college, very very happy than I ever imagined, and short of time. I look at my MAL "plan to watch" section and I'm overwhelmed by shows that I could watch (crippled by choice, first world problems, haha). And I have exams coming up and need something to relax to.
And then your list comes up, and I'm reminded that always go for the classics.
Thank you once again, for helping a happy man become even more more happy.
Flying Witch.
Yuru Camp.
Yuru Yuri.
Lucky Star.
Yosuga no Sora.
All good, calming entertainment.
Yosuga is albama level shit
One of these is not like the others 🤔
Not sure about the last one..
5 and a bit years ago, I was unemployed, having finished college 2 years beforehand and was applying for jobs constantly with no luck. I was quite depressed at the time. A couple of months before I did get a job (my first job), I decided to watch Fruits Basket (it having been on my to-watch list for a while because I'm a transformation fan and the concept interested me).
I binged the whole show over a month (I think 1 episode a day usually) and I really got emotionally invested with Toru and the other characters' situations. The comedy and mostly comforting atmosphere really appealed to me as well and the opening song's lyrics (I watched the dub) helped to calm me down and make each day more bearable for me whilst I was watching trying to find a job. I haven't seen the remake (I might do in a few years once it's finished) but I would recommend the original Fruits Basket to anyone who's going through a tough time.
I've watched GTO, Barakamon and Non Non Biyori all because of your past reviews and I agree with everything you say here. Now to go watch the other three. Thanks for never letting me down with your recommendations!
Yess Barakamon and Yuru Camp! Two of my absolute favourites especially when I'm feeling down. And as it's winter here now I'm going to go put on the fire and binge Yuru Camp.
Thank you for this just started watching laid back camp , 30 seconds in im laughing more than I did all summer, opening scene was so wholesome
That anime would be Mushishi and the early seasons of Natsume Yuujinchou for me
Saw GTO in the thumbnail and I immediately freaked out. I watched that show for the first time a year ago in July, it seriously helped me through a rough spot in my life dealing with my father's declining health. I wish more people remembered it.
Slice of Life anime has always been my favorite genre and Aria the animation has been one of my favorites I watched all of them it's so good to see somebody else that enjoys slice-of-life anime
I watched Usagi Drop when I was feeling down and it really helped me. I recommend that show.
Your opinion will change with the manga
I'm very surprised kino's journey isn't on this list after watching your review on it's one of the shows I watch to calm down
Is nice to see that we are not alone, sometimes is really hard to find people that is in the same situation as you, I don't have big problems, but right now, I don't know what to do with my life I am depressed, empty and feeling bad because of that. Life is hard, or maybe I just weak. So, thank you for this, I'm really trying to put me together and go back to the world, this may help me a bit.
Nyanpasu~ best soothing anime of all time
Laid Back Camp is a very special show for me (if you couldn't tell by my icon!). It started airing around the time a member of my immediate family was hospitalized for some pretty severe issues and I have very vivid memories of coming home from the hospital that first day, climbing into bed and just looping the first handful of episodes that were available at the time, over and over, because they never failed to soothe me. It's no exaggeration to say that the show was a huge part of what helped me cope and get through that part of my life and I'm forever grateful to it for that.
This video cannot be more perfectly released, been having a bad week and trying to find the perfect anime to unwind with depression is well... Depressing for lack of better word lol
GTO...❤️ I wish more people remembered it. Though I’m not sure if it was widely known or not. It’s hard to tell back in the 90s. Onizuka was the best virgin ever! Also, the intros and altro songs were so catchy! And his voice acting was soo entertaining!
No "A Place Further Than The Universe"??? That show was brilliant, I want more in the future.
This is a great list! To anyone reading this 2 shows that helped me get through tough times were Welcome To The NHK and Eden of the East. The had a ton of characters that I could relate too.
ALWAYS CHOOSE SLICE OF LIFE.. REALLY PUT U BACK IN TRACKKK..ONIZUKA..NON NON BIYORI NYAANNNPASSUUU
The Space Brothers anime needs to be continued. I crave more.
I haven't watched you in a while but surely missed your voice and elegance. Ty for still being here😄
Ty so much for this video. I've been having a hard time for a couple of months now, but this helped me feel a little better
"It's getting worse and worse"
Corona Virus has entered the chat
Channel's to watch when life has got you down ---> glass reflection
Barakamon really made me feel lots better when I watched it when it came out. Bless that anime.
When younger I was more positive, now with also health issues mentally I need more love. I've changed my viewing habits due to it to find happier stuff to get away from a scary, darker, closed-minded world. Thanks for sharing your anime and your own situations in life.
Over the years of watching Anime, my tastes have grown by quite a bit starting from shounens like naruto/one piece to ecchi harems like Highschool DXD, then back to sports Major/Hajime no ippo and off again to romcoms Toradora/kokoro connect only to dive deeper into more mature shows like spice & wolf/mushishi and eventually taking a U turn back from thrillers like Another/higurashi to crime jormungand/black lagoon, having come across some oddballs like the gatari series all the way back to My hero academia..a full cricle!
But everytime I sit back and think of the most fun times I had with all these shows, its often the mundane character interactions that had always got me invested in those shows, from romantic banters to casual talks amongst nakamas, comrades and teammates as they reach for the stars. And unsurprisingly enough Slice of life has grown to become my fav genre eversince
Some of my personal favs with these slice of life elements are

I'd add My Roomate is a Cat - there are some harsh scenes from Haru's (the cat) POV, but watching Subaru progress from where he is at the beginning of the show to where he is at the end through what he does for Haru (and what Haru does for him) is heartwarming.
you've won yourself a subcriber. As a student of literature i wholeheartedly agree with you about the escapisim that which some of these anime series provides us.
I think yama no susume is a honourable mention. Its so relaxing and gives you this good feelings.
Personally, I would also add Natsume Yuujinchou on this list as well. It calms me down whenever I am depressed (quite often) and lifts me up. It has a wonderful pacing and steady flow that really brings out the characters and it relaxes the shit out of me.
Also, while a lot darker in some ways, Welcome to the NHK would make a great anime to lift your spirits. There's oodles of characters with it "Worse off", and its very well done.
Yuru Camp top my list for almost anything. The visuals are gorgeous and relaxing. Plus the OST has me almost in tears when I listen to it. Easily my favorite anime. Glad to see someone who appreciates it.
For a rough pick-me-up, I'd recommend Welcome to NHK for those who are on their way to seeing life being worthless. Now it is quite dark, but between soothing music, it provides, dark humor and, by the end, a different outlook on life, I'd say it is good for people who don't see any future in their lives. It certainly helped me.
That expression on your face at the beginning, I know it all too well, I've had it myself sometimes. I love this channel you have made and am really glad you made this episode.
Space Brothers is one of my fav animes. That's the type of anime which never leaves you.
All of these are so good, especially Laid Back Camp and Barakamon. I’d also recommend March Comes in Like A Lion, it’s a beautiful, artistic and heavy show with the most accurate representation of depression that I’ve ever seen till now.
Highly agreed! About "March", though depicting dark emotions at times, it won't give you the chills like some other anime do in that regard. In fact, it is very heart-warming in the general sense.
Quarantine has suddenly made this a very relevant list.
Yo @glassreflection ... been watching you for a long time. I finally watched clannad and clannad afterstory. I just wanted to say thankyou. It very much helped me through a tough time. Im very grateful for the fact that you spoke about it so frequently.
I love Laid Back Camp and i legitimately got goosebumps when u built up to it idk why. Nice list ill look into the others if i want an alternative from Yuru Camp
I'm so glad you mentioned GTO. It's one of my trifecta for anime. GTO/Trigun/Yu Yu Hakusho

Space Brothers is an awesome anime and I wish it had gotten more seasons. The manga continues on even today and has even more content.
I am so happy you made this list and honestly I was just thinking about you and your channel so this was well needed and appreciated! Love you Tristan
Everyone has bad days and life is tough. This is coming from a guy that lost his family and friends (they're all dead). On that note, you shouldn't almost lose your composure on screen. Crying won't solve anything. Stay strong and fight the good fight. If life is hard on you, focus on the life you want and fight for it until it's yours or you're dead.
I don't really watch a lot of anime but the ones I tend to recommend to others whenever I was stressed and needed a de-stresser were Kyokai no Kanata (cause the art was ALWAYS amazing and I got lost in it every time I watched and felt calmer, also the OST is SO beautiful) and This Boy Caught a Merman (this one is a movie BUT the art is beautiful, the story is beautiful, and I love watching the two main characters relationship with one another grow!, especially with the main character having depression and learning to overcome it gradually with time).
EDIT:
Also! Doukyuusei is a good one to watch when you’re down too! The animation is fluid and amazing, the soundtrack is gorgeous and the two main characters make me laugh and cry and love them even more every time I watch them.
