    The rings RWR shows calculated "lethal range" and not distance.
    - The calculation considers the specific type of threat, altitude, speed and range.
    - The inner ring is 1x lethal range and the outer is normally 2x lethal range.
    For example, an SA2 Optic will always show dead center of you are below its ceiling, regardless of range, whereas a AAA threat will stay outside the outer ring as long as you are high enough, even if you fly directly over it.
    Airborne threats have similar parameters depending on the specific detection.

    The range an emission can be detected by an RWR at IRL is NOT a linear function of radar's target detection range, like it is for other western RWRs in game so far. That's because radar's target detection range is proportional to a 4th root of radar power (round trip), while the range RWR can detect it at scales with a square root of radar power (one-way propagation). A weak radar might be picked up from like 1.5 times its own detection range or even less, while a very powerful radar might be picked up from something like 10x its detection range.
    Also older radars, like the RP-22 try to make up with horrible signal processing with more power. So the relationship between peak power and radar age or its target detection range is not what you think - modern phased array radars have a much higher detection range with a fraction of power of old, cold war radars. They also have a higher gain, which partially compensates here, but not completely - so no, maybe they overdid it for the RP-22, you can poke them about it so they re-investigate it, but I can totally see newer radars being picked up from a lower range despite them seeing targets further away - in fact it's _by design,_ you want the radar to be stealthy and hard to pick up by RWRs. This is the first RWR in DCS that takes this aspect into account at all. Previous RWRs just pick up the radars at a fixed multiplicity of that radar's target detection range, which is completely bogus and unrealistic, in real life there's no easily identifiable relationship between the two.

    • @AviationPlus
      @AviationPlus  Před měsícem

      Even with that said I don't think seeing a MiG-21 at 180 miles is anywhere near normal. I can't imagine in Vietnam that pilots got warnings of MiGs at 180 miles away.

    This is exactly how western RWR is supposed to work, except for the fact that the Phantom's RWR detection range is ridiculously wide.
    The current F-16 and F/A-18's RWR place both an enemy at 10 miles and an enemy at 80 miles on the same outer ring unless the enemy does STT. Without datalinks, 4th gen pilot's situation awareness is worst then 3rd's.

    • @AviationPlus
      @AviationPlus  Před 2 měsíci +3

      This is exactly how it is supposed to work except for the fact that it is completely broken. The current F-16 RWR is unplayable. Basing the rings on Radar status. It does not make any logical sense and is a complete SA killer if I am merged with a MiG and they are placed on the outer ring solely based on the fact that they are not locked on to me and in search mode. However, if someone is 60 miles and in STT they show up on the inner ring. Watch my video discussing the matter further. czcams.com/video/evDemqQufVY/video.html
