I think he is the strongest shinobi despite the fact that he was defeated by Yhwach, just wrong place at the wrong time, maybe in case if he knows how to prevent bankai theft he would have won. Only Genryusai had that confidence and incredible power. He didn’t need any loss and drama to become stronger, level up as a Ichigo or kenpachi, he was already like that, but Yahwach had a plan and unfortunately it worked.
The only confirmed character in anime that reigned Supreme for a thousand years.

So everyone knows, the fake Yawach had ALL the power, and memories of the real one. So Yamamoto defeating the fake one meant he was STILL stronger than Yawach. Basically, Yamamoto fought TWO Yawachs with ONE ARM. This was the reason he had the fake fight first.
As for Kenpachi, he wasn’t defeated due to less strength or less power/Riatsu. If you noticed, he was still clutching his Zanpakuto but was unconscious. Meaning it was most likely due to illusional riatsu or an incapacitating riatsu. Kenpachi had only a small scratch on him and correct me if I’m wrong, but it looks like he still had his eye patch on. Meaning he had to have been duped into an illusion or double-teamed.
My man Kenpachi nerfes himself just to give a good show.
Right, after his first battle with unahana(aka first kenpachi) he unconsciously nerfed himself to feel same excitement from every battle he fought. He put countless shackles on himself. If he hadn't that restrain all of his battle would end in an instant.... @Aphetalion

A verdade é que tirando ichigo saraki e unohana! Os antigos capitães eram muitooooo mais fortes que os da era atual! Foi muito mais fácil, ter êxito na guerra anterior!

yhwach himself implied he couldnt take him headon@@isaiahhouston228 he outright states he wouldnt have had a chance had he forced orihime to heal his other arm and faced yhwach at full power but the fact that he was basically weakened from aizen, missing an arm and then wasted a tremendous amount of energy using his bankai on a fake. hes basically admitting had he 1v1 a 2 armed full power yamamoto he probably would have lost.
Ywach was in my opinion the worst villian of bleach. Like his power was so broken they introduced so many new characters and development for ichigo and yet he was just like nah you don't have a new sword (breaks) Like don't get me wrong I hate winning purely because power of friendship. But really why go through the training arc, why introduced all this lore about banki's true names, that they can never be repaired once broken. Dog shit on every strong character new&old to show how strong the BBE is and yet the MC's new power was taken/negated and the power of teamwork was needed. Sorry for the rant but this arc was so good is so many ways but was bad in equally as many ways

The guy who was so strong that he kept in line the strongest most ruthless shinigamis including the first kenpachi meaning the strongest shinigami. Kubo had to kill him off just for ichigo to shine. If he had bankai anti-theft measures he would have ended the war, then and there. Also, I think he was the only one who could cut through quincies blut in shikai form.

You know, one thing I noticed about bleach in general?
Dragon Ball Z aimed at glorifying Blonde Hair and Blue Eyes as strength. A symbol of the German Nazi and Japanese relationship in WW2.
Bleach destroys that relationship. Quinces use German in all their language. Yamamoto represents Japanese Pride that does not let outside influence change who he truly is. He fought hard to end the Quincy. A people they once fought together with when he realized the evil behind their true nature. Note that Yawach’s second in command (true second) has blonde hair blue eyes and Yawach has black hair. The same in Nazi Germany, blonde hair blue eyed soldiers with Hitler having black hair brown eyes.

Yamamoto was a badass but to be honest yhwach had a solid damn reason to be angry and take revenge, the quincies were literally exterminated and were on brink of extinction.
