      Thanx for the view, I have watched a couple of your vids too, and am surprised how similar US & UK soldiers use their kit, such as mummy air pad inside the doss bag, and foregoing using the hood and wearing a wool hat instead, for better warmth. I had it in mind your regiment it was compulsory to use compression sacks for sleeping bags, unlike Uk army who loose stuff their sleeping bags into their Bergens/Rucks. Good to see similar methodology. Happy Trails Bud....bex

    Great video! Just a friendly tip from a mechanical engineer, and former truck crane operator: You will at least half the tensile stress on the straps around the tree if you don´t "strangle" the tree but instead have a loop with fixed length. Great demonstration!

      I use tree friendly approved hammock straps, designed for this purpose. Tree straps are designed to hung at a 33-35 degree angle, to accommodate the occupant.

    how come it took so long to get the vid out bex? filmed in January

    • @bexbugoutsurvivor
      @bexbugoutsurvivor  Před 6 lety +4

      All of the production is pre recorded in bulk lots. At the time I thought I was due an operation on my back, so i would be unable to film for a few months, so needed to filmed out of sequence. But dont worry this winter youll see me in a heat wave, Lol..bex

    Bex, I would do more hammock camping because it's more comfortable. What puts me off is, it's a bit time consuming setting up when I can just roll out a bivy in under 30 seconds. I do like your quick deployment method of chucking everything in a bag, I'm looking at a compression stuff sack which will hopefully reduce the bulk of a hammock setup for a 35L pack. I know that sounds optimistic but for 3 season camping, its possible with a lightweight bag and sleeping with clothes worn through the day, a lightweight tarp and hunka bivy so no reason to get wet with a small tarp area. ATB, Damian

      Thanx for the view mate.... 35 litres, wow....I have my cocoon and top blankie in a NII 30 lire on thats pritty much it, with roll pad under the pack. As youve guessed this was a pre recorded vid, and have been out every weekend since january filming different hammock set ups. I am primerally a goose down hammock camper, (compact super lightweight, and hundereds of your uk earth pounds) and have experimented with many set ups for up coming night out vids, 1 to view every month...
      I love bivvy camping but cant get to ground since a spinal injury, most of the kits ive filmed are only 7-10 KG inc cook set and stove with fuel, personal sunderies, but the recording equipment blows the lightweight pack out the water...Happy trails...Bex

      I found Snugpak gear poor performing for warmth, I feel its design flaws were never addresses for general sale to the public (in my opinion) but at least its cheap...lol
      I know I speak in the minority as there is a big fan base of these products. I sold all my snugpak gear and bought something warmer lighter & more compact, and also more expensive....View its replacement using the link below.

      If I could give any advice to anyone, it would be to keep saving up, and buy gear that actually works, this will avoid much disappointment in the long term. If money is an issue look toward a 3/4 inch HDF foam pad and a sleeping bag unzipped used as an over blanket, and a bivvy bag.

    woudn't snow seep in the underblanket? also you loose some air accumulation properties that the coccoon would provide between the underblanket and the hammock, isn't it?

    • @bexbugoutsurvivor
      @bexbugoutsurvivor  Před 6 lety +1

      The cocoon is sat both over and under the actual hammock, ive tried it around the under blanket too, both ways seem to have equal R value. The pertex material wont wick any moisture, however a hammock protector will give that peace of mind...Bex

      thanks for the answer and the channel, mate!
      i am brazilian and we dont have much snow here and your channel (and a few other) gave me knowledge enought to try going to ushuaia (in very controled and safe conditions ;) )to learn a bit more about winterish skills.

    How would it fit a asymmetrical lie.

    • @bexbugoutsurvivor
      @bexbugoutsurvivor  Před 4 lety

      The Asym lay is slightly more compromised, but doable to a lesser degree. Cocoons are better served for straight lays, which also allows for both shoulders, to be insulated by the UQ at the same time. If an asym lay is a priority concern, I would void using cocoons, and double stack the UQs instead....all the best bex

    What cost for the 3 elliments bex

    • @bexbugoutsurvivor
      @bexbugoutsurvivor  Před 4 lety +1

      At the time each element was about £80 or so. Total waste of money in hindsight, snugpak R rating values are a work of fiction....lol TOP TIP Save up and get goose down quilts, duck down is halk the price of goose down, if money is tight. If your on a budget look at my home made cocoon insulation, works better, and is a fraction of the price....will drop a couple of links to other videos that clarify these points a little better.

    Another thoroughly enjoyable demo Bud, thanks a lot. I have a winter Dutch army sleep bag, liner and hoodless bivi system, I think it's called the M90, have you ever tried it? Harry, flyinghaggisfilms.

      @bexbugoutsurvivor  Před 6 lety

      I am aware of the M range and dutch doss bag, nearly got one, instead opted for the brit 90 pat. I think both bags are awesome, I would gladly carry extra weight for the reassurance of a quality nights kip. You need to pull the trigger on the Dutch hopped bivvy, dont end your life with out owning one, (life changing) for winter camp...Bex
