- When Tones and I first wrote Dance Monkey after a rough night of street performing, she could have never predicted the stardom it would shoot her to. Dance Monkey found success on the streets, then on the radio, then in every country on earth. But becoming Spotify's most streamed song by a female artist has come with a list of unexpected issues. Tones and I has dealt with everything from unbearable comments to stalkers.
This is, Dance Monkey: The Song That Destroyed Its Creators Life.
Thank you guys for watching, like and sub if you enjoyed, SunnyV2 - Zábava
Look, I never liked the song, i hated it. But never in my life would I send the woman threats and bullying messages because I didn’t like a song. How fucking cruel do people have to be. It’s ok to have an opinion on the song, but to bully someone to the point they feel miserable is so low! And I do not wish bullying on anyone, not even my worst enemy
Well, I do wish it on my worst enemies but she ain't of em lol
Yeah is awful and her voice so annoying and nasal
Yup, same here. Never liked "Dance Monkey", it sounds too simple, too low-effort to me. I'm seriously baffled that so many people like it. I heard her other stuff, wasn't big on that either, but it's much more complex, much higher effort. People are really sheep.
so true

This is actually so sad to hear. Imagine your life getting ruined because your song went viral.

My kids listened to this song a good bit a couple of years ago. I just assumed Tones and I was an industry singer like everyone else. Knowing her story, she's awesome and I hope she has tons of success in the future.
By myself I was scarred seeing her with so much weight but never thought to insult her! Now she looks amazing. I understand the fear for her, but only exclusively for her benefits.
I liked this song when I first heard it. And when I saw her, and her appearance, I instantly liked it more. And respected her for being herself. So many artists try to conform to an image, and this hugely talented young lady just let her talent do all the work. And I wish her whatever kind of success that she wants!
Yeah I found the song catchy and I don’t hate it. I just assumed she was another one hit wonder but her story and the hate she gets is pretty sad
Tones repelled the haters with a genius coping strategy: “Then I just turned my phone off…” 😂😂😂

People are so disgusting. Why would you send someone hate for making a song you don't like? The Internet really has brought about a whole new era of bullying
not everyone always thinks before they act, maybe just 1% of them is already millions
Right? It doesn’t make any sense. It’s like when people were sending death threats to Rebecca Black for that song “Friday.” So cruel and unnecessary. If you don’t like the song, don’t listen to it. If you can’t handle it playing in public, either confront the person responsible for playing it, or just learn to chill out. Preferably the latter.
We need to bring back bullying vs let cringe culture be. Its like that predator and prey graph. The more cringe comes, the bullying comes. Then the bullying comes, the cringe comes. It basically culminates.
this song belongs in hell

I have always loved the uniqueness of her singing voice.
It's so heartbreaking that people can't just enjoy and appreciate art.

It's a shame that her other songs get overshadowed by Dance Monkey. Fly Away and Cloudy Day are better in my opinion. With that said, she didn't deserve to be bullied for the song or her appearance. If anything, it's amazing that she was able to get her music out there as an Aussie because our country often gets overlooked in the music scene.
I think radio and TV stations were largely at fault for contributing to the hate towards Dance Monkey as they overplayed it to the point where everyone got sick of it. I liked it when it first came out but the endless replays of the song got annoying, not so much the song itself. It was everywhere over here. Here's hoping her other songs get more recognition across the world like they have been in Australia in the past year so people start to know her beyond Dance Monkey.
It is always sad when a musical creative finally gets the big recognition they have worked hard towards, but it ended up hurting their creative career instead
a tale as old as show business
Well I don't know, isn't the life-changing amount of money worth anything? She could still publish more songs and if people like them they'll still listen to them but she would not be living like a struggling artist anymore.
Also I think if people are not liking/willing to listen to her other songs then she would've to work harder to make better songs because she was in the same boat earlier before writing dance monkey!

It's fascinating to me how many artists despise their most popular work. As an outsider looking in it was hard to understand why, but I think I get it now. Fame is a cancer, why would anyone want it?
I feel like artists usually despise their biggest songs because they can seem to become bigger than the artist themselves, and it will make people not see them as who they are, but just "the person that performs that one song". I'm pretty sure Juice wrld and Kurt Cobain atleast felt this way.
@viber3328 radiohead definitely felt that way about creep
It really is because the public can feel so cruel. Fame also leads to being defined by an objectified image that you can’t escape from, which sounds so claustrophobic and scary. If you’re an artist and you want to get your art out there, it’s a necessary evil. People who are passionate enough will try anyway. I think (and I know this is a controversial take) but it’s especially scary as a woman in the public, I remember as a little girl noticing that every single woman who put heart into her work or said anything unpopular (or who even was too successful) would be horribly wrecked by the public. Not just having haters or being humbled, but it would get really extreme and she’d become a laughing stock for things that wouldn’t be fixated on to the same extent in other artists. This kind of ridicule happened to successful men too, but more selectively, whereas it seemed to be a rule for women regardless of their other qualities. It made me feel afraid to put my voice or work out there because it was hard to imagine positive outcomes, and it enhanced the fear of speaking up or sharing honestly.
like leonard nemoy, for him it was worse bc it was a beloved character he didn't write, only acted so being typecast was devastating. He, like most ST actors, came from theater. Also, in that vein, the guy that plays al bundy on married with children. He at first hated, then learned to love a character he played for years.
It gives them a platform to produce more valuable projects.

The journey to stardom is either rainbows and sunshine or just downright depressingly grey
people really don't get that, and still bash em.
If during the journey, you release something that’s actually good, then it’s entirely rainbows and sunshine, with a bit of added grey, but in this case Tones & I life was ruined simply because she released nothing good, even Dance Monkeys (that song was so obnoxious and I don’t think I’m the only one having that opinion). Welcome to the madhouse was her next album I think, it did touch on certain deeper topics, but the execution was just not good.
Especially when you realize the ones with sunshine had to do some really deplorable things to get there.
For most it's just hard work with highs and lows. Just like everyone else.

This is so incredibly sad. As a dance performer of festivals the lyrics hit so close to home. Then when I found out the back story and then watched the video (my performance character was an elderly lady) I fell even deeper in love with it. She's beautiful inside and out and those who hated on her are just sad individuals.
Imagine going your entire life without understanding the feeling of "Dance Monkey"... I liked the song certainly not the best ever but it deserved every bit of fame it got. Wild we pave over the big name people who openly attacked an artist for existing..

And the great thing is, this girl’s success was organic. All the other artists she mentioned are part of “the club”, packaged and hurled down the sh*t pipe into our ears and we have little choice about the matter.
The Weeknd was homeless in the beginning and had to work his ass for his fame, he's not a part of any "club". I was hella glad to see his song Blinding Lights rise up and maintain it's status. Idk about the others though.

I love the song Dance Monkey. It even made me cry when I heard it properly for the first time.
Her style of singing is unique and she does it well. Dance Monkey was a hit for how catchy the song is plus how unique her voice and style of singing. It brings something new and interesting to the table instead of the media being stuck on the same ol shit.
The album has some decent tracks, well produced for what they are.
I consider her singing to be unique, fun and done in a proper way. Just watch videos of the vocal coaches on CZcams who were surprised by her voice and her unique character.
Dance Monkey is a unique and awesome dance pop track!
As I stated before, I love her unique quirky voice. Brings something different and cool to the table.
Still one of the greatest songs. Simple and catchy beat, very original voice, unique and so on. It's still fucking amazing!
I had the joy of seeing Tones pre-fame, busking in Byron. Her talent was raw, & she poured 100% of herself into every last note on a random night, in a random street in Byron. I bought her demos/EPs. From memory, she was living/working in her van at the time.
Shortly after, Dance Monkey went viral. I personally preferred the original/more stripped back version. Suddenly she started getting booked for gigs everywhere, & held a social media comp for tickets.
I won some (she gave away quite a few), but was devastated when I couldn’t go, because I was in the middle of gruelling treatment.
I messaged Tony to thank her/ so she could give the tickets to someone else. At this time, the entire world was opening up to Tones, with countless big names wanting to work with her.
Tones not only took the time to send a really heartfelt, supportive reply, but told me to message her for any gig in the future & she’ll give me tickets so I can see her live.
Tones passion & conviction for music was such that it formed a visceral, almost physical presence alongside her as she busked. She was in such a vulnerable & heartfelt state of flow, it almost felt intrusive to watch her.
I almost wonder if Tones wouldn’t be happiest song-writing for others, lending vocals etc, _a la_ post-2010 Sia, & just performing when the mood strikes her.
I’m still hoping she’ll release a full version of ‘Johnny’ (or ‘Run Johnny’) which she busked way back when. It had a haunting quality which still lives in my head rent free
Ebbs & flows are part of life. The music industry is unforgiving if success is born in a moment of time & culture, rather than talent.
Clearly, that doesn’t apply to Tones. I’ve got absolute faith that her skill & all-consuming passion will be the skateboard to see Tones ride that shit out.
So long as Tones regularly mentally returns to those long nights in trackies busking in Byron, immersed in _flow_ , singing only for herself, all the pressure, expectations, industry b.s will fall away.
The magic will follow.
She comes off as such a genuine, sweet person, it kills me she's gotten so much hater she didn't deserve in the slightest..
'Johnny Run Away' is my favorite song of hers. Are you saying there exists a longer version of it?
I remember seeing her busking in Byron when she first got there from Vic. She was always so grateful for anyone who would stop and listen to her. She's so sweet. So I was shocked to find out it was her that sang Dance Monkey. ( In a good way). But I should've recognised that voice. I like the song myself, and everything else Tones has brought out since. Her version of "Down Under" is good too!

you're telling me Dance Monkey was "authentic, innovative and creative" ????? DUDE, if that's innovative then what was Crazy Frog? What about the Gummy Bear song? And how about the Hamster Dance? I'll admit it, I love these songs and I hate Dance Monkey, that song feels like a supremely bad re-hash of the ideas of those songs.
This makes me so sad for her! God bless her I really hope she’s doing better these days. People can be monsters ugh.
I liked that song. And it never got old to me lol. Didn’t know anything about the artist tho. That was a great video. Gained some insight. Nice.
This is weirdly common with artists. With actors, artists, filmmakers and musicians. Another example is radio head's creep, a song they actually started to hate and stopped playing at tours cause everyone kept asking for it
Radiohead did release some 10/10 after that tho, OK Computer, Kid A, In Rainbows, and the most recent one is A Moon Shaped Pool
Reminds me of what happened with Kongos. I can't even listen to that song without feeling bad for the band.

I feel for her. She's so genuine and down to earth. I do love the song and feel sad that she doesn't have happiness from the success.
I never knew who sang this song but I felt indifferent about the song itself. I just thought “Oh yeah I’ve heard this song a ton, whoever made it must’ve made it big.” I had no idea people took disliking this song so seriously. This is damn sad. Almost all mainstream songs sound mediocre to just bad nowadays so Dance Monkey isn’t THAT bad. Its mediocre, its just got played too much.
People need to realize if someone offends you or if you get bad feelings from a song, its not the song/persons fault, its YOUR internal reaction to it. Please stop hating on people just because you don't like their art or something. Where did we loose our humanity and compassion 😥
I think I have a special connection to this song, because it’s the first song I learned to play on my guitar, and frankly, I kinda really like the song.

I thought it was a very cool song. It has its place on a party night. Right up there with "Hey Makelina". And I saw many a baby lite up when that song came on. Granted it got over played. But, she should feel proud as a song writer. And to beat every popular female artist on Spotify. Go her!
The fact that they only wanted to hear Dance Monkey and leave her gig afterwards, kind of reminds me of the Fugees in 96 when they released „Killing me softly“. They had released „Fu-Gee-La“ before but everybody in my school went crazy because of Killing me softly. Once they started buying The Score they started complaining that they didn’t liked it.
Kids should hear the original.
The Score was - and I don’t use this word loosely - a certified classic.
The Score is universally loved, what are you on about?
By definition a one hit wonder?

This is my daughters fav song, she's only 6, we sing to it in the car all the time. As soon as the opening bit comes in, we look at eachother and she giggles in excitement. Therefore this song will always hold a special place in my heart. Also, I'm a busker too, I'm not talented enough to suffer from the same problem as Tones & I, in terms of audience wanting an encore. In my head, I always assumed that would be a good thing, but I guess maybe not.
Tones And I, Me and my sister loved/love this song i was in about 7th grade when it came out, never knew there was this much hate on the internet for you until this video, you didn't deserve it, it was a great song they just jealous you made a great song, i mean they abused it then said they were sick of it, i mean who made a big song like that at that time, you and only you. ❤and you're beautiful just the way you are, God bless you. I've never understood people's obsession with Nickelback. If there's a group that I don't like, I won't listen to them or talk about them ever. I won't burn calories trying to convince people that they're bad. There's no point in that.
It was overplayed and it became one of the early internet memetic spread of consensus. Chuck Norris is strong, Lays packages are filled with air, and Nickleback sucks.
Within the context of when the hate started, it was grating. But just a few years later the idea became self-perpetuating even though it wasn't playing non-stop and people had mostly ditched radio for their own mp3 players.
that's why I don't listen to radio, don't watch tv and don't have social media. I don't even know this song.
People want a reason to complain 🙄🫣🤪
I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard any songs by Nickelback and I still hate them just because 😂
It became cool for hipsters to hate them at the height of the whole hipster movement. They're basically sheep. "Oh, I'm supposed to care about and hate this one particular band? Okay."

8:50 This is infact the case for me. It was one of my favourite songs, but I started to like it less and less due to how much it was played. However, nowadays it would not be one of my favourites even if it wasn’t overplayed. My music taste has changed.
I'll admit when I heard I assumed it was just another annoying social media trend, but I'm glad I found this video. People can be such sheep and often toss out insults online not realizing the impact of what they're doing. I've grown a lot since then and learned that music can include a lot more than just what I like and am used to.

this is nothing new as someone who had managed concerts for 10 years for has been bands of the 80's and 90's, people will buy a ticket to hear one song and the artists know to wait until the end of their shows to play their hit songs
Like Radiohead with Creep.
Most bands that are one-hit-wonders do that, and I’d say almost all bands save their most popular song for the end.
I think it's gotten worse as music sales focus more on singles and streaming than albums. It blows my mind that people go to concerts not to listen to 95% of the music, but to just be obnoxious while waiting for one song
Every genre, too. Country, hip hop, metal. The hits always come last
I don't see this too much with K-Pop concerts personally. They mix hits along with new releases very well, encore songs tend to be "cute" songs that are meant for fans and about fans
in australia there is a radio law that they have to play aussie talent and artists for a certain % of songs each day....
when our talent pool is low - they flog any decent song to death...
luckily i didnt get bombarded with this on the radio and have only heard it sporadically - so to me it hasnt been overplayed or become annoying - and for that im grateful cause its a good tune
This makes sense because I heard this song twice daily for a whole year everyday on my way to work lol
That's a shame.
I LOVED Dance Monkey. LOVED IT and Still DO. But even here in America they Grossly overplayed it. Now that it’s been four years I actually just recently brought it back into rotation.
Is this actually true this law... I can believe it but at the same time it feels like Aussie doesn't support Australian artists as much as they should, or the artists that they do mostly come and go and aren't that outstanding. Maybe radios less the problem and more how even the major labels in Australia (universal, Werner etc.) don't remotely promote their artists.
