I enjoyed this movie, but I really enjoyed the TV show based on it, which plays as a kind of sequel to the movie, it explores how the drug effects different people differently, bringing out whoever they really are deep inside and magnifying it to the extremes. It suffers from "We're getting canceled" towards the end of the season, and fumbles a little, but overall I think it's a good show.

Fun Fact: There was an alternate ending where Eddie was obviously still on NZT and knew he couldn't get any more of it after Carl said everything. But he still stands against Carl and tells him that he can always find a way to get off the drug. But the ending doesn't feel as victorious as this ending does. Overall, any other story would end with him getting off the drug and trying to live a normal life, or dying from withdrawal. But the overall idea with being on NZT is that it made him a better version of himself. And the overall theme is more of a question: If there was a pill that could you a better version of you, what would you do?

What if you could be a better version of yourself without the drugs? Look what happened when he took the drug. It was like turning the lights on and he saw things he never noticed before. One of the first things he noticed was that his apartment was a dump. So he went to work and cleaned it up. After cleaning and organizing his space he thought "I'm not high, I'm not wired. I haven't had a drink or a cigarette in six hours. I just know what I need to do and I do it". Then he went on to finish the book he had been procrastinating on for months, got himself a bath and a shave and a haircut and some new threads and started a fitness program.
What was there that he couldn't have done without the drugs? Maybe not as well or as fast but there is a lot any of us could do to improve our lives.
This is what Jordan Peterson is talking about when he says start by cleaning your room. Get your life in order, get your relationships with your family and friends in order, and go on from there.

NZT is obviously exaggerated but Adderall is basically the real life equivalent but it's for ADHD.

I know a lot of people disliked this movie, but I enjoyed it. It can be a bit corny at times, but like yourself I really enjoyed the creativity used to portray different things throughout the film and the editing is fun and interesting even if the story itself is quite simplistic.
Edit: And yes, I would absolutely use the clean version of the drug. I love learning new things but I have an awful memory and I forget a lot of what I read about, especially the finer details. There’s so much stuff in the world that I’d love to learn about and a drug like this would allow me to learn as much as I wanted, and retain it and be able to recall it. Just imagine the good you could do for the planet and for the people of the world. Imagine if we gave this to children as their brains were developing! We could make it available to everyone who wanted it as if it was tylenol. It would be incredible. The possibilities are limitless😜 So yes, I’d absolutely do it in a heartbeat.

This film is an interesting case where I find the initial premise and first act to be far and away the best part of the movie. After he decides to go all Wall-Street-bro and DeNiro shows up, I feel like the story collapses into something much blander, smaller, and less compelling. Ironically, the story is remarkably limited (at least to me!).
That said, Cooper’s performance, the soundtrack, and the visuals are all excellent!

Fun Fact: The original book was basically Eddie sitting around using up his stash of NZT and right before he died from withdrawal, he saw the Senator on TV with the same eyes as his.

I was okay with the Wall Street stuff, it was borrowing money from (and then ignoring) the organized crime guy that lost me. It was such an obviously stupid thing for anyone to do, much less someone who is supposedly as intelligent as Eddie was supposed to be. It felt so forced and contrived, just to insert conflict. He surely could've figured out a far less dangerous way to raise that money in a short amount of time.

@@matteorenner1386 yeah that would have been a dumb ending with what the movie set up with it causing so many issues and killing so many people, like by the movie logic even that senator would have just been dead a few months later so what would be the point?

Hey now James...we DO NOT use 100% of our Brains. The End. The Subconscious records EVERYTHING and the Conscious filters it out in your Map of Reality. Imagine, if you could lift that Map...and tap into memories you never even knew existed. I'm just typing this at the beginning as you call the main character a druggie. He will evolve and realize his dependence on it. It will even spawn off a pretty good TV Show years later. Ah the power and charm of the mid and early 2000's movies. I'm not sure if this was after a book or not. However, as a "self help junkie" myself for most of my life. That's why I Loved this flick! (and even watched the TV show before it was cancelled)

CZcamsr JustWrite did two videos analyzing the Limitless franchise, from books to movie and the TV series after that, he explored how contradicting are the story themes depending on the version. I highly recommend both videos as they go pretty in depth.
I personally like this movie but it leaves me a bit conflicted about its main topic, from one side there's the constant hustle culture depicted in an positive way which I disagree to, also as you mentioned there's this theme of people needing to cheat or lie in order to advance, I remember part of the inspiration of this movie was the topic of smart drugs and ADHD medications abuse by college students (without ADHD) in order to pass their exams which came more to the public attention in the late 2000s. On the other hand the concept of enhancing human cognitive capacities is a fascinating one and as I remember some experts in the field saying at the time, at one point we as humanity should give a more serious and thorough consideration in a manner not dissimilar from how we treat preventable diseases at birth through vaccines. Maybe not in 10 or 50 years, but at one point is a conversation that needs to happen.

I remember seeing a comment on CZcams about the ending scene at the Chinese restaurant that elevates the scene a little more:
Eddie: orders a bunch of food and lobster.
Waiter: you'll need a bib to protect your clothes.
Eddie: but it won't protect my dirty hands (political joke)
