    As a teen, I had a friend whose family ran a bus fleet. We once “borrowed” a coach and took a group of our friends to the beach. I grew up driving heavy trucks and equipment, so I knew how to drive the manual transmission. We got in some trouble, but not much. No damage, no one got hurt.

    This is my first time seeing this channel. I am a old timer bus nut, my first interstate trip was at 17 years old driving a scenic cruiser from Florida to New York and back. I stayed in the bus business a number of years eventually got in to trucking and then and other things but I’m still a bus nut at heart. The stories that I could tell.

    It is so cool that I came across your channel. I grew up in the Peoria area and moved to Chicago for a job in the mid 80's. Used to get pretty homesick and it would always brighten my day when I came across a PCC coach on the road! Still makes me smile even today...

    Curved stairs actually started on the EL3 Renaissance. The predecessor of the J4500.

    My mom put me on a bus when I was 10 years old to visit my sister in La Jolla California ....the year was 1961. I traveled alone and I guess in 1961 it was not much of a concern to put a 10 year old alone on a 1100 mile trip. I departed from Toppenish Wash on a Greyhound bus. Switching buses was a bit of a challenge.....there was usually a courteous bus driver to get me to the correct bus.
    I tried to avoid it but I had to use the rest room on the bus....small....noisy...not pleasant.
    When I tried to leave the restroom the door would not open no matter how hard I pushed....being about 80 lbs I did not move that door. There was a panic button and I reluctantly pushed it.
    The bus pulled off to the side of the road and the bus driver came back. There was a teenage kid with his foot up against the door preventing from getting out.
    The driver chewed that kids butt out good and threatened to kick him off the bus at the next bus stop if he did that again.
    The Los Angeles bus depot was scary as hell to me.....but I made it.

      The J4500 is like the 737s of the motorcoach world.
      The DL3s are like the MD88s of the motorcoach world.
      The D4505s are like the MD95s
      And the Vanhools are like the Airbus of the motorcoach world.

    Hi James I was like you when I was a little boy. My Dad was a trolley operator and I lived riding with him.
    Then my Dad became a bus operator. I was always with him on the bus. He drove the old look GM's which were TDH-5106. When I got out if the military I got a job right away driving a bus for the city transit. I drove for them thirty six years and got a goid pension. While driving a Transit bus I worked ten years part time for MARTZ Trailways..It was a GREAT part time job. MARTZ asked me a few times to work there full time but I could not give up my Transit bus job. The money and benefits were so much better with the Transit company.
    I am also a bus but. It us a fun hobby
    I take,a lot of pictures of buses.

    My all time favorite bus brand is Bluebird, at one point they made coach buses, don't anymore, they made city transit buses, don't anymore, now they only make school buses, multi function school activity buses, and commercial buses but they're still my all time favorite brand.

    Love your channel. Funny you mention the restroom. I have not seen a properly working one since the the MCI D series. Most common problem is the door and lights almost never work. On all new models and lacking natural light is a huge mistake.

    Hi, James:
    I enjoyed viewing your recent video about Continental trailways.
    I drove for. Them in the American bus division on the Burlington side for 14 years, until 1987 when-- because we turned down their contact offer-- they conveniently were bought by Greyhound.
    We turned the deal down on June 18th of 87, and became Greyhound drivers on the 19th.
    Trailways was a company that respected their drivers. We had company barbeques, softball competitions, safety award dinners, and an open door policy where we could walk into the manager's office and iron out differences over a cup of coffee..
    Greyhound was strictly business, and their goal seemed to be to burn out their drivers with abdominal work loads, and zero empathy.
    I drove for them until Oct of 87, and then quit out of sheer disgust.
    About the Eagles; I was fortunate to drive most models, and reflect that on ski charters from Chicago to Iron mountain Michigan in blizzards,high winds, and no chains, the buses plowed through drifts with aplomb, and always stayed on the road without slipping and sliding.
    On long multi week charters, they always ran well, and were supported with servicing and cleaning by a nationwide network of service facilities.
    After that I turned to 18 wheelers, and had a fine career driving for good companies until retirement in 2017.
    Now at 78, I'm retired, rving full time pulling my trailer all over the US. With my trusty Ram a lam a ding dong. (From an old sixties song)

    From 1980 through 1986, or for the last six years of its life, I was the seventh and eighth grade teacher in a country school in one of the counties that border Peoria county, and each year we raised money for a trip to Chicago or St. Louis. We hired a Peoria Charter coach five of those years. I wish I had pictures and information about which coach, but I can assure each was an amazing experience for the kids.

    I currently have a gm pd 4107 conversion one of the reasons i picked it is because of the luggage bays 30 some inchs tall at there lowest point the downfall as you point out is 12 foot and change
    Belts are another reason i like my buffalo there are none all gear drive and i hate the belt of death on the mci

    Nice channel! Back in the day I worked for Royal American out of South Holland IL. I loved driving the H3 45. Royal had all provost. Which was nice only one type of coach to learn. Now I work in an office...sometimes I lean back and long for the open road. Also saw the kids in a couple of the shots. My kids loved it when I would give them a ride.

      Yes you are absolutely correct!
      The EL3 or E model or otherwise known as the renaissance coach, Which was basically the test bed for the J model. I will be doing a video of the evolution of the J 4500 down the road. It will start with the E model.

    Pretty cool to see the Van Hool in there. I live 10 minutes away from the factory in Belgium and drive by it every day with my school bus (looking to become a coach driver myself in the near future) and there's always a bunch of CX's parked in the factory yard. Perhaps the explanation for the less luxurious restroom is that over here it's generally only for "emergencies". Both during my driver training and as a passenger myself we've always been told passengers are to use the facilities at the stops along the way instead of the toilet on board. Europe isn't anywhere near as spread out as the US so there are plenty of stops everywhere. The restrooms on the coaches here aren't really restrooms either, It's usually a very small toilet cabin located right next to the middle passenger door underneath the seating area. I can imagine in the US when driving for hours without stop a proper restroom is very welcome indeed :)

    MCI was formerly GM Truck and Bus Division along with Detroit Diesel engines. Both were part of General Motors. Prevost is also a major provider of bus conversion shells for Marathon, Featherlite, Liberty , and other bus conversion manufacturers. Hemphill Brothers, outside of Nashville TN is the largest bus provider for entertainers. The company built Ground Force One ( the Presidential bus )

    I love every type of motor coach but I think the J4500 is one of my favorite personal ones... both the new and old models. And there is nothing negative about being a bus nut! We are a community of many love all things buses and support a industry which is more important than anything in the transportation industry!

    i think if i was to ever go to america and board a coach it would likely be Megabus just because i've been told certain tickets/passes can be used on them from my country as Megabus is owned by a British company called "Stagecoach"

    Just found this channel and I'm impressed. Being in the UK, it is amazing how different our coaches are. In Europe, many of our buses/coaches are still 'coachbuilt', whereas the drivetrain is provided by a truck manufacturer like Volvo, Mercedes, Scania or MAN with a company like Irisbus or Alexander/Plaxton mating them to a custom body. Is this the same in North America?
    I liked your comment about the Temsas being noisier - reminds me of the buses I used to travel on back in the 1980s. Volvo used to make buses through a partnership in Irvine, Scotland called Ailsa. These buses, called the Volvo Ailsa B55 (with Alexander bodywork here in Scotland) were deafening inside - little noise proofing and you heard that Voith D851 transmission with it's retarder wail and it's little 6.7 TD70 turbo diesel. These buses also found their way to Hong Kong as well, along with many Leyland/Volvo Olympians.

      Yes, in north america, the buses use engines like Cummins and Detroit diesel so they don't make their own engine. Occasionally they use Mercedes or Volvo

    I use Peoria charter to get from my home in Chicago to UIUC. I wonder how many of these busses I've ridden on, I should start counting. I wonder if I've ever had you as a driver!

    You touched briefly on charter service and commuter service. There are definitely commuter bus drivers and charter bus drivers. Not to say us commuter drivers are aggressive, but our people really have to get to work and we do in occasion have to duck and dodge especially in midtown Manhattan. NJT are particularly aggressive with ducking and dodging. During the summer tourism NYC season the tour buses tend to hinder us being these people are on vacation and ate humpty dumptying on 5th going like 12 mph. No disrespect here at all, there really are tour bus drivers and commuter bus drivers.

      I do bus stuff too! We're out there...Check out Bus Grease Monkey too. I do car stuff too, and toned down my bus vids, but theyre still up. I still do repair videos for my DAC bus that I imported from Romania...and Im restoring another one, and plan on building up a collection. Im eyeing a nice MC9..and still, wnat to get a Flxible...I dont do the RV thing though...I restore them to original. Why? Because...uhm...Im not just a bus nut, Im the whole screw, pinion, and bus shaft! lol...(ok, that was bad...)

    Peoria Charter is 100% better then windstar, I had a bad experience them, not with drivers but with the buses always breaking down and lack of communication.

    You did a super nice job! I know the Provost I went on one time. I took my grandmother on that trip. I would probably never go on one of those buses again because we ended up on the very front seat behind the driver. I think she was trying to put the brake on for driver every time we ever got near anything she kept thinking the driver was getting too close. But in all true plenty of room because that was flat nose. And she was just nervous. LOL it was a super nice trip though period and the driver did his best to make her comfortable. He finally move her back. Sadly she passed away in 2019. She quit traveling several years before. But I was still traveling right up till covid-19. And I'm ready to go again.

      One of these days if you ever go back to New York. I'll probably take a trip back to New York. Because I came home to take care of my grandmother. I spent around 30 years there I'd like to go home while to see what looks like. But those are high cost trips and low profit for the charter company. The cost of permits and parking and the speed of loading and unloading a passengers for sightseeing inside of Manhattan in a round that area is outrageous. Not counting everything else. Still getting the markup it's really hard for those trips.

    Thank you for great information! We are planning to offer a similar channel with “school bus” & yellow charter info! After much research, we purchased our first D4500 this year. No frills is right, but they are solid built machines with lots of years of interchangeable components! Thank you!

    When I was a driver for A charter company in San Antonio. I like the MCI for over road trip. Vantool for in town charter because easier turn ratio.

    I find motorcoach companies hang on to their H3-45's almost forever. When our transit agency bought second-hand H3-45's, they were 13 years old, had 1.4 million miles on them, and were pressed into a mix of daily commuter transit, occasional local neighborhood transit, scheduled intercity service and occasional long-distance charters. Five years later, they are still problem-free and everything (VCR, CRT screens) fully functional. How long did Peoria hang on to their H3-45's, how reliable were they and about how many miles did they have when they got rid of them?

      Great question. All of our older prevosts were phased out around 2014. Most of them had well over 1 million miles on them. We took that opportunity to switch to mostly MCI J's. In 2020 we bought a brand new Prevost. We may start going back into them again.

    James, watching this one reminded me of a question I had for you… the gas and brake pedals, over the years, have the manufacturers found a way to add more space between them? When I drove some flat nose school buses that was the one thing I hated. Because of big feet I found that I often found that it was hard trying to keep my big foot on only one pedal at a time 😳. ✌️out.

    I am not a fleet owner nor an operations manager. Nonetheless, have always believed that a charter company would be better off with the entire fleet consisting of a single make and model. I know there would be some trade offs, but the saving would probably be worth it.
    As far as I am concerned, would love to see some deep dives into being a charter driver; everything from training, pre/post trip inspections, route planning, passenger management, doing multi day trips. This is uncharted territory, pun intended.
    I think it would also be cool to take an in depth look at the different functional departments such as dispatch, mechanics, sales, ops management, ownership, etc.

    I love the j4500s I have 3 in my fleet 2 with cat/zf and 1 with det/allison j4500s MCI dl3 was pur go to for a long time it is the most reliable bus we actually still have 1 in our fleet but I will say I bought 4 prevost h3-45s this year and I will tell you I have fell in love with the h3-45s smoothest buses ive ever drove with the det/allison we have went from only MCI busses to now almost converting the whole fleet to Prevost this year

    James, We recently purchased another Setra S417, we now have two. We did discuss purchasing an MCI J model, but thought it would be better to have the same make and model for efficiency. I really do think MCI did Setra disservice as their distributor. These buses drive just like a minivan. Love them so far.

      Hey John Wright! We used to Setras! They did drive like minivans. Very responsive. Our drivers had some issues with their long tail swing. The parts just got so expensive for them and repairing them was way to costly for us. I did enjoy driving them.

      May be a bit pricier but Definitely go for a Prevost H345 if you are looking for a lot of undercarriage space. In my opinion, I find the Detroit 60 with a Allison is the best running combo which you can find on a Prevost H345

    I have a question. When did they start putting seatbealts for the passengers. It's been years since I been on a travel bus. Even though I have my license to drive them. Another question is. Do the passengers have to wear them and is the driver responsible to make sure the passengers wear them?

      Bus companies started using seatbelts maybe three or four years ago. No my company does not endorse them, and I don't enforce, nor make my passengers wear them. Aside from all that. If a bus were to be involved in an accident, it would take place below the passengers feet.
      Edited to say bus manufacturers. Companies do no install seatbelts.

    The D4505 is used by Greyhound currently correct? It's the workhorse of Greyhound or is it the Prevost now?

      Yes MCI d4505 is one of the many that greyhound uses. I is definitely one of the work horses. Prevost are starting to become more popular in Greyhounds fleet.

    If the J4500 and Prevost won't fit under certain bridges, what does the driver do? How does the driver know beforehand if the coach will not fit under a bridge while driving James. Thanks Bob

      GOod Question. That is a situation that drivers like to avoid. Best way to do that is to do your homework before each trip. Google street views will usually point out which bridge is too low.

      When I started trucking in the late 70's, a Greyhound bus was the fastest commercial vehicle on the highway. I remember thinking I'm going to try that someday. I did in 2001 but it was short lived as I got lured back into aviation shortly thereafter.

    am also a huge nerd for heavy vehicles and where I live the buses are based on the trucks the manufacturer makes meaning they just place a bus body on the chassis now that means the engine at the front, now is that an advantage? are there front-engine coaches over there? and also any other facts about these type of busses

      Hi Thank you for leaving a comment and your kind words. I have never been on a Scania or Man. I have been on Volvos and I will say that Personally I feel like Prevost's and MCI's are more comfortable and reliable. In the end its all about where you can get parts for your bus easier. We do not operate MAN or Scania here because it would be very expensive to maintain and get parts for. Each geographical location will use buses that have manufacturing or dealer centers for that make and model so that its easier to maintain. I hope this helps

      they were actually decent. Louder than the DD series 60 but a good hearty engine. The DD series 60 were my favorite though. They had more getup and go.

      Hi Brian West! in the US it is not permissible for a ridgid bus to be longer than 45 feet. Articulated buses are allowed to be 60 feet. In Russia, Finland, Germany and Poland they Have 52 feet ridged buses.
