If it sounds like I'm sticking up for my favorite monkee, it's because I am 😉 Mike Nez was berated 4 years for not participating more in the Monkees tours and appearances but he was busy and when his schedule allowed he sure did show up live and even did a Skype for one show after Davy Jones passed away.. I saw 2 different interviews recently where Nesmith got seriously emotional about that, saying red-faced and obviously pissed that he never was embarrassed about being a monkee and the people that say he was are full of you know what

Dwayne, thanks for your comments. I admire Michael and his work too, and I've spent so much time trying to explain to people that he's so much more than their constructions of him. This thoughtful man talking about artistic issues and personal growth is the one whom I see, and he's also very honest about discussing his past. I wish people would set aside their baggage about him and really listen, as I've seen him try to do with other people. .

He wouldn't have achieved the things he wanted to if he'd stayed with the Monkees. He would've done himself and the group an injustice as it would have been a lie. Some people think if you don't surrender your individualism for the collective you're a bad person - glad Albert Einstein didn't listen to that crap.

Show the second interview was with Micky dolenz in Australia I think, where once again he told it like it was.. quote Peter and I never liked each other and I mean we did not like each other okay? But someone came in to me and said that Peter had passed away, at this point he choked up and started crying and couldn't talk through sobbing except that Peter was dead.. and that was his very reaction to the news at the time also, my point being he loved being a monkee, but he moved on with the rest of his life and did what he could to pay homage to his roots as a monkee 😎 thanks Mike for everything

Mike's mother really had it together thinking that I'm fixing my art mistates with basically latex, and other polymer resins and titanium dioxide which gives it the white color, plus there was tricholorothane in it till Gillette reformulated it after they brought the rights from Mike's mom for like 48 million dollars in 1979.
She was a smart woman that's for sure in finding a problem that she had & many others had and she worked to find a way to fix 'the problem'. It was once called,"Mistake Out". Fitting name in that her product "fixed mistakes".
    Unfortunately Mike's mother
Bette Nesmith Graham passed away : (Mar. 24, 1924 ==May 12. 1980) May she rest in peace.

the more i watch of him the more i think i understand his feelings towards his main Monkees years. he felt a sense of disconnect from his core self as compared to the image he was required to project as a part of showbiz. he was strained creatively by being confined to a certain image without the freedom to change. also, he's the kind of person that does things because he thinks they should be done, and doesn't jibe well with people making a big deal about it. so i imagine that tabloid-style fame was very against his nature. it seems he's come a bit more to terms with his time with the monkees recently and i would bet that's probably because he's had so much distance from it and so much time to work on things that he found compelling. he's extremely fascinating, i would be happy to meet him some day

In the episode, "Monkees on Tour", Mike mentioned how in high school he'd cut class and sit on the performance stage and look out into the empty seats imagining himself as a world famous singer. He said, "Someday, man. Someday." He added he still felt like that despite having a hit TV show, touring sold out shows, and being the idol of many. Peter Tork mentioned in a commentary that was typical of Mike to think that way and even now probably thinks, "Someday", despite all he has achieved.

Michael and Elvis kind of remind me of each other. They're clothing (offstage) style is kind of similar. They both had wickedly awesome sideburns, and their hairstyles were somewhat of the same vein. They have pretty much the same taste in music. Elvis and Michael loved blues, country and rock n' roll. Just the way they performed was totally polar opposites; with Elvis jumping all over the place and gyrating, while Michael stands in the same place like a stoic statue.

(Just felt compelled to share this beautiful text--I admit I was judgmental of Michael Nesmith in the past--but God's love surpasses all!) I remember Michael being on a beautiul episode of the Monkees--"The Devil and Peter Tork"--he was great in that episode--and hey, it left a great impression (positive) on me! The Monkees TV show kind of introduced music videos in the episodes where the band mates would be juxtaposed with the scenario in each of the episodes, while they would pretend to play and lip sync to the music. That was the precursor to the Michael Nesmith music video Rio which became part of his Grammy award-winning Elephant Parts, and the launching of MTV on August 1st 1981 being the first 24/7 music video channel, nothing like it is today with its garbage programming. A gross deviation from what MTV used to be in the early 1980s.
