Im heading to Spain in a month and Im retracing my steps from when I was 10-14 living in Spain. Im scatterbrained because its my own story. I hope to get it together in a month. I landed an interview with one of the most Famous bulllfighters in Spains history thats stull alive. and Possibly a Mayor of a big Spanish City. Stoked but Nervous.

Scriptwriting for a documentary involves many challenges, such as finding the idea, researching the location, subject matter, evidence, characters, etc., creating an order and pattern for facts and emotions, structuring and organizing the script, and elaborating your writing style. But I think that the biggest challenge in developing a successful documentary is to find the balance between reality and the fictional or dramatic elements that are necessary for a good story. It also requires combining facts and emotions with fictional elements that transform the real into an artwork and provoke a powerful emotional release, a Catharsis.
Yeah it’s really hard to get that right. What films do you think did get it right?

My point of view on this very important topic “FRAMING THE REAL” (the connection between the real/factual and the imaginary/fictional) is rather artistic and minimalistic … so I am not oriented in commercial productions but on marginal artistic or experimental documentaries.
I found a lot of inspiration in the work (both filmic and theoretical) of a British female filmmaker, Jill Daniels. She wrote a dissertation: Memory, Place and Subjectivity: Experiments in Independent Documentary Filmmaking (I think the pdf is freely accessible online) where she discusses theoretical and practical aspects of this topic …
Another inspiration is the films and the theoretical writings of Wim Wenders (i.e. Buena Vista Social Club, Palermo Shooting, Alice in the Cities, Kings of the Road, Lisbon Story). They are not all documentaries, by far not, but he poses the problem of the relation between reality and fiction and he invents his own filmic solutions! If you are interested, start by reading “THE IMPOSSIBLE STORIES”! I have tried to express my thoughts about “FRAMING THE REAL” in a blog. I also give some filmic examples.
