Its a book, she didn't like, come up with it all herself, you can get off your knees, baby. She gets _pa-leeenty_ of credit for this movie, are you serious?
@@AC-bk1jg 1) it was the 2000s
2) Tina Fey's Humor is a lot about taking things that she knows are offensive and then making a joke about it.
In Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, she has a white actress play an indigenous woman pretending to be a white woman who takes down the Washington Redskins, she has Kimmy fall in love with a Vietnamese guy named Dong who laughs at Kimmy because her name means "penis" in Vietnamese (not really), she has a gay black man do a one man show about his former life as a Geisha then get boycotted by Asian Americans for cultural appropriation only to start crying and think it's a beautiful play when they actually see it.
@@tyriaxepheles7996offensive humor doesn’t mean above criticism (same with something being old). she has some serious problems with reinforcing racial stereotypes through her work. i was a huge kimmy schmidt fan in middle school, but now i can’t even watch it without cringing. dark humor is meant to have a deep understanding on social issues with a comedic spin. i admit, i find the native american plot funny, but there’s a deep disdain for asians throughout her whole body of work. she really likes making fun of asian people and making fun of asian names, it’s literally in this movie. cheyenne lin has a whole video about her thoughts on tina fey, if you care.
katya and trixie immediately spotting rachel mcadams wig is so funny, she was wearing one bc she was filming the notebook at the same time and needed to be brunette

My school gave us a panel of seniors some of who had sex and some who hadn't. They shared their stories and reasons for their choice. Then, the teacher left the room and we were allowed to ask them anything we wanted. We also had an interactive lecture about how important consent is and full discussions about STDs and how they can be contracted. Our gym teacher was gay, so she even addressed gay sex. It was great. It was 2002 and it was an all girl catholic school. I continue to be shocked at how good we had it.
I went to Catholic high school. I consider myself lucky that they at least taught us accurate anatomy and told us STDs exist, but I have heard horror stories from kids who went to more fundie schools.
Your school did that?! Wow!!!
All we got was a slideshow of stds and my class didn’t even get to finish it 😭😭

I wonder if the movie was inspired by the Wild Thornberries Nickelodeon cartoon show of the 90s and early 2000s about a girl who moved to Africa who was homeschooled, with her parents for her parent’s nature show/documentary. Omg Katya is so lucky she gets to discover this film for the first time! It may very well be the best show in existence, ever.
Watching Katya’s genuine reaction to Mean Girls and being like “oh so that’s what that is?” is so funny to me because I watched this movie when I was like 9 or 10 not even knowing what half the jokes meant until I was in my early 20’s💀💀💀
the amount of people who miss the fact janice is not a lesbian and that it's actually a really clever joke that pays off later in the movie 😭😭😭
That and she ends up dating Kevin Gnapoor, who "only dates women of colour"
same vibes as "I thought she was a pisces?" in Bend it like Beckham
I don't think it is "missed" that the movie calls her straight. I think a lot of queer people- especially us lesbians- prefer to interpret her as a lesbian because otherwise the narrative of the movie is that she only didn't deserve the homophobia because she was straight.
For some of us she is just a very relatable representation of our high school experience; people could tell you were gay even when you denied it, and could be homophobic to you because of that.
For these reasons, it makes sense that for a queer audience, Janice is often lauded as an iconic gay rather than deferring to the movie's intention of her as yet another gay joke.
her name is Janis not janice
@@sushihotaka125 Because the movie is based off a book with actual teen girl recounts of high school, it makes sense because the movie is about girls being socialized by society to hate themselve and compete with each other and homophobia is used as a tool to tear down other girls. (This isn't something that's exclusive to girls though, it also happens frequently in male circles as well.)
Janis was ascribed a label that ostracized her from her peers and in order to cope, she not only becomes vindictive but also embraces the label as way to push away people and sorta take some power back from her abusers. ("If the world thinks of me as a monster, then fine. I'll be the monster they want me to be")
Don't get me wrong, having Janis shrug off the internalized homophobia and embracing her queerness would have been major in the 2000s, but it's kinda dismissive of the plot to flatten the complex problem that Janis faces as "just another gay joke."
I can't even explain how hard this made me laugh. Like I had to pause it so many times just to recuperate
I will never get over how well and quick they compliment each other's comedy.
The fact that Trixie only knows how to say "goodbye" in a civilized, calming voice, is all thanks to Katya. I mean, isn't that the real lesson here?
