If not for the ageism in Kpop and xenophobia in the rest of the world, Changmin (and Yunho) would be some of the biggest stars in the world. Their talent and charisma is insane. People forget how young they were when they debuted and when they had to take up the task of keeping TVXQ afloat when over half their group left. Lesser performers would have folded under the pressure. Devil was my SOTY and I will forever be salty that it didn't get the attention it deserved.

The song knocked me out of my socks and I damn near fell off my chair when he whipped it out during the 20&2 concerts.... i will never shut up about this album and if ppl get annoyed then so be it
It is not ageism per se. The truth is that many people don't know that kpop is teenage music. Teens are the only ones who spend money in albums. Some fandoms buy 100 copies of the same album and some 7 of the same just for the cards. Cassiopeas are or were the biggest fandom, but as adults, they don't or won't spend 100 dollars for an album when they have other priorities. Tvxq is now part of adult singers. Still talented, but a mature sound will give them new fans. There are pop singers in Korea who are very successful. Good and loyal fans still follow Tvxq.
People don't really hate on kpop because of xenophobia, though. The vast majority of people that do not want to give kpop a try and/or just straight up hate on it, it's mostly because of how incredibly toxic almost every fandom that involves around kpop is, not only incredibly toxic, but they are also formed by kids in the vast majority so i'ts even worse.
Can you believe that "Chocolate" was Max/Changmin's solo debut? After 17 years in the industry, he finally had his official solo debut in 2020 with this song, which is the title track from his first mini solo album. And in true Changmin TVXQ style he blows it out of the water. Both Changmin and U-Know had a few solo singles before this, but it wasn't until 2019 for U-Know with his song "Follow" and then Max, almost a year later, that they finally both have solo albums.
Changmin/Max has been nicknamed Bambi by his fans and he has taken it on as a sort of spirit animal that represents him, so I think the deer in his "Devil" MV is supposed to symbolize him. If you read the lyrics, the song is about having self doubts and bad thoughts and harboring those feelings within your heart. So in the end the deer (himself) becomes like the Devil because he has now embraced those feelings.
During U-Know's and his reaction video to the "Devil" MV, Changmin said the forest you see him in is a real forest and they had to take a boat to get there. They used drones with lights on them to light the area to give it that spooky effect. And although "Devil" is a remake of a song by Alex Runo, Changmin wrote his own lyrics for the song and gave it a different storyline than the original version.
As you noticed, SM used "Devil" to draw Changmin/TVXQ into its SM Culture Universe with the reference to Kwanyga in the lyrics and the pink planet you see in the MV, etc. I guess as Rising Gods of the East, it makes sense that TVXQ could be otherworldly-beings just like the rest of SM's groups and artists, in order to connect their storyline to the rest of SM's Universe story.
"Devil" is the title track off his second solo mini album Devil, which was released in 2022. His "Fever" stage video was a pre-release from the same album that was part of SM's New Year's Eve SMTown SMCU Express 2021-22 livestream concert.
Yes, you're right, the whole "Maniac" promotion video is a homage to classic Hitchcock horror movies. The opening is a nod to Psycho, and a large part of the video also references The Shining, Vertigo, The Birds, and even The Big Lebowski, North by Northwest, Brazil and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, etc. You would be surprised, he actually did a lot of stunts for this MV, just check out how much fun he had filming "Maniac," czcams.com/video/habg8uhrnSU/video.html.
If you remember, TVXQ's fandom is Cassiopeia and their fan color is red -- which is why you see one of the primary colors in most of TVXQ's MVs is red -- and when you attend a TVXQ concert you will see an ocean of red.
TVXQ have always had a more sexy and mature concept, but unless you really delve in deep and get to know their Japanese songs in particular, a lot of new fans have no idea how sexy they can really be. Fun fact: Changmin got married in 2020 right before his "Chocolate" MV was released, so his solo songs and MVs are much more "adult". And he became a father to a boy in 2022 as well. They are men, not boys. :D
Tohoshinki (TVXQ) are also one of the most famous singers in Japan as well, even among Japanese artists. And like SHINee and BoA, they are so popular in Japan that they are considered part of the mainstream music scene. TVXQ has one of the biggest worldwide fan bases and they sell out some of the largest concert venues in the world. They are one of SM Entertainment's top selling groups, easily selling out concert tours around the world.

Because of their come back, many kpop fans online are just tuning in to Changmin. I'm glad that 20 years in his game, peoole are still finding out abt him and be amazed at his skills. And ppl have been asking for more older idols who can sing wellll if people try to actually listen to other kpop group/solo then they'll know idols like Changmin is still running the business successfully!

Yes I 2nd this! I absolutely adore seeing TVXQ, Changmin and Yunho content. But it's truly a crime that there's not enough people discovering Jaejoong and Junsu and giving them a chance cuz they are just so incredible!

Why are whey blacklisted?
@@NewLifenpc They sued SM for slavery contract. JYJ won but they called as traitors by media. Also, the unwritten rules happened, they banned from broadcasting stations in Korea and Japan (music shows and variety shows) cause SM wouldnt let their remain artists (TVXQ, Suju, SNSD, Shinee, etc) to music shows if they invited JYJ. The duo (Changmin and Yunho) themself never talk about ex members since then.
Actually, the duo and JYJ struggled in different ways. But JYJ even made collab with Kanye West to enter American market (since Korea and Japan blacklist). Junsu make debut as actor musical, Jaejoong and Yoochun acting in several dramas. They basically doing everything.
Fortunately, their fans still royal so both 4 of 5 members (except controversial Yoochun) still exist and make music till now.
RJ, when you get to Yunho's solos, please include his "DROP" and "THANK U" mvs, so so good, should not be missed!

Devil and Fever are my faves from Changmin. His vocals are soooooo astounding. ❤
I think the promotion part is just that it was the music video for a bside. Chocolate was his first official solo album (yes, yes they both did not get solo albums until 15+ years into their career) but he had solo songs in albums and also had a pre-military solo song with a music video. I would recommend watching the videos for "Me Myself & I" and "All That Love" as well!
Yunho has also done multiple videos for one of his solo album, each song in Noir has a MV and I think it's worth watching them all. Loco's video is a lot of fun! It will make the video maybe way too long but I think the storytelling will make more sense to you if you watch the whole Reality Show short film instead of just Vuja De.
Finally, those aren't *Korean title tracks but as you liked Changmin's musical coded songs the most I'd recommend listening to the following: Fated, Sweat, Reboot which are all from their Japanese albums, and I'll add Mirrors (JP) and Getaway (KR) which go really hard and are super cool songs!
5:29 that number thing is about the laws of music videos in Korea, they have to put in the beginning the age restriction, as an example in this video you have to be atleast 7 year old (korean age) to see it
Well being more specific this is the laws for MVs in Television so in case that you don't see that number is because the MV would not be in national TV

Devil was one of my favorite albums released in 2022. It is so good!! I also love it because it has so many genres we don't see too often in kpop

When I watch Fever in SMtown online concert, I have goosebumps and chills during the whole performance. He is so cool, full of charming and such a powerful performer. After SM upload the stage on youtube, I literally search reaction to this everyday but very few ppl knew about this

Devil was both my song and album of the year. Every single b side, including Maniac and Fever, are wildly creative and varied. It is a mini album of original songs that feels like it is a “Best Of” album. I also stand by my belief that Maniac and Fever are two of the greatest Meatloaf songs (not made by Meatloaf) of all time.

Changmin is the first SM artist that was coached by legendary SM vocal coach/songwriter Yoo Young Jin, a group that also includes DO of Exo and Winter of Aespa. Changmin is an amazing vocal talent. You should check out the song "Priority," which is a collaboration by Changmin, Taeyeon, and Winter.
Also, whoever wrote Maniac was probably a fan of Todd Rundgren, particularly the Bat Out of Hell album (which Rundgren produced).

Max has always been a good vocalist, killing the high notes just like that. But he lacked confidence in the early years- he was the maknae of the group and really young. Now I am so proud to see what a gorgeous man he has become ❤ His stage presence and confidence are just wow!😎 Thank you for the reaction!

Chocolate was his first Korean solo album/ solo debut . Both Changmin and Yunho have released a Japanese solo album before their Korean solo albums ( U Know Y and Close To You) as a gift before enlistment. They also have been doing a solo song each on every TVXQ album since they became a duo. They both had an SM station after they returned from the military, Which if you are going to check out Yunho next please watch Drop! Also of course Follow from his solo debut True Colors. Thank U from his second mini album Noir, and Vuja De from his most recent solo album Reality Show!
Look I have ALOT of favorite vocalists in K Pop but Max Changmin has been and will always be at the top of that list and you see now why. And yessss Fever is hands down my favorite Max song and probably in my top 5 of all time for all of K Pop. Thank you for this reaction ❤

Thanks for reacting to TVXQ and Changmin the real gem of Kpop. one of reasons "Fever" stands out so much because it's the Stage Version, their live version is always much better than MV regards choreography, live vocals, performance and stage presentation. I'd still recommend to listen to their Japanese songs, which feels like a different genre when they are in Japan lol

well Chocalate is the debut and at the same time it is not. Well being more specific is his first release as a soloist in Korea, he had other solos in albums of the group and he debuted as a soloist in Japan many years before his "korean solo debut"

Maniac was a “promotional” video for the same album that devil was on & devil was the title track which the mv for dropped a few days later. Honestly I think they just wanted to do both mvs lol. Devil has always given me gospel vibes! And the fact he mentions Kwangya in it is so funny 😭

TVXQ and JYJ were among my top favorites "back in the days" when I was new to kpop (found it in 2011), and although I was a bit more into JYJ, and don't listen to them as much as I used to, I still love them all. 🥰

Ooooh you should check their solo songs in the group albums so you should find them under the group name... Changmin has Apologize, it was released before they started with their solo albums. Yunho has Honey Funny Bunny and omg!!!! If you ever search the meaning of baby maker song you are gonna find this as an example!!!! Unfortunately they don't have music videos but they are worthy of a reaction. ❤❤❤❤❤ by the way loooved your reaction to fever... I felt the same whenever I hear it.
