Today I show you the replacement of the starter on my 2007 E90 328i. This is the shortest and quickest method of replacing the starter. I was able to complete this replacement in just over 3 hours, but I was also filming the whole time. You are able to replace the starter without removing the manifold entirely, which is what saves so much time. Thanks for watching and if you have any questions please ask! Please like and subscribe!

Watched this to fix my 2011 328i. The steps are easy to follow. This is the best tutorial ive seen on this so far. Thank you.
This video was a huge help. One thing I will add that made this so much easier. A thin 7/16 combo ratchet wrench. I was struggling to get sockets/ratchet on the two main bolt holding the starter in. The shorter bolt on the starter was pretty easy to reach from the front, as shown in this video with a long extension, but it was also very tight wasn't wanting to break loose at the angle the extension is at. If you maneuver and wiggle the manifold around, you will find it is very easy to simply reach down and remove both of these main starter bolts with a small 7/16 or 11mm craftsman ratchet wrench. Also the gaskets on the manifold can be accessed by wiggling the manifold around to get access to the gaskets and I used a long zip tie, to keep it in place while I removed the gaskets. As the young man in the video mentioned, a small screwdriver did the trick but they were baked in there pretty good. Carefully work the gasket around with the small flathead screwdriver and eventually it will begin to peel out. Once it starts coming loose the rest of the gasket peels out fairly easily. I can't believe how easy this job was once I found this video and used the small ratchet wrench. No way this manifold needs to come out. Great video and thank you!!
Great video, it helped a lot. The dealer wanted $1200 to fix my starter. Watched your video and it took me about an hour and a half total. The 11mm wrench trick is a great idea
Awesome, Justin! I'm glad you found the video helpful!
Awesome tutorial! Hopefully someone will find this helpful: I was able to use a 7/16 closed wrench on that back bolt. Really hard to get a grip on it otherwise. Thank you so much for posting this, it made it a pretty straightforward repair!
I’m glad you found the video helpful! Thanks for sharing your tip 👌🏼
For anyone who is willing to take on this task - it's not that hard.
No special tools are required to get to the starter. BUT, my tip to you (from my personal experience) go and buy this this ratchet from Harbor Freight (3/8 In. Drive T-Bar With Flexible Ratchet
), it worked like a charm after unsuccessful tries with flex-head ratchet. This tool was recommended by another mechanic in one of the e90 starter replacement videos. Save yourself some time with a good preparation.
Bolts on my 2009 335i Xdrive were E12, not E14 but it seems to vary by model/year, be ready with both sockets.
Good luck!
Thanks for sharing your helpful repair tips!
So I just finished changing my starter!! I can’t go without telling you how thankful I am for your tutorial!! It made it a piece of cake thank you!!
You're welcome! I'm glad you found the video helpful!
Just changed my starter, Thanks! Saved me $460.
Great step by step. Only thing different I did was remove the tower bar on the driver side. Not sure if you un plugged the two rail plugs or not but I did to give me more room to move the manifold. Only took me 2 hours from pulling in to leaving. No issues. Hardest part is the actual starter removal and install but not that bad. Car starts faster now. Didn’t replace any parts except the starter bolts. Thank you very much!
Thank you! Good tips. I’m glad you found the video helpful
Awesome video. Your video was perfect! Followed it to a "t"! No problem. Saved 800 bucks! Thank you!
Glad to be of help!
I just did the exact same thing on my 2010 E92... but I was outside in the cold. Nice video.
kcor4 Brrrr, that must've been cold! Thanks for watching!
Hi JD. I have a 2007 328i station wagon. I had the same issue after troubleshooting, etc. I followed your step by step approach and it worked like a charm. Thank you for posting and saving me a carload of cash.
I'm glad you found the video helpful!
Works! Just did this with an 09. Tips: keep magnets next to your tool, so you dont drop tools or screws.
For the starter dilemma, i kept one hand on the 11mm flat wrench so it would not come off and a metal tube (floor jack handle) over the other end of the wrench to pry it loose initially. Worked perfectly.
To get the cheap new aftermarket starter on I noticed that the original starter had a bevel around that circle that inserts into the starter so I grinded one onto mine. The front screw didn't line up so I used the long rear screw as a guide for the front screw hole, to make sure it lined up once I got to starter in there, and then I replaced that with the small screw and put the large screw into the back.
...Now off, to get my get a couple sockets that dropped in to the abyss of the engine bay.
Great video. Took 3.5 hours complete w clean up. Reused the bolts, but didn’t over tighten them. New intake seals was a great tip. Mahle brand. Starts super fast now. !!!
Nice work! Glad the video was helpful!!
Ive been wrenching on cars for 20 years, this video popped up looking for a diagnosis video, your intro hooked me and I stayed to watch the whole video.
I already knew how to change this starter but, your video was so well layed out i decided to watch.
Very well thought out and shot tutorials are far and few between. Keep up the good work.
Kevin, thank you so much for your comment! I appreciate the kind words and support - especially form an experienced mechanic as yourself. Happy Holidays -JD
Does this work for n52s?
Agreed, very well edited
Thanks for taking the time to give me an idea of what this repair looks like, my parts are on the way. Cheers
Glad to help!
Thanks for uploading this video! I just did it myself vs. having the dealership or a shop do it and saved a lot of $$$. The hardest part was getting the top aluminum bolt, it's such a hard place to reach.
Glad I was able to help out! And I KNOW RIGHT!! Accessing that bolt is a total pain, but worth saving the money.
Super helpful! We replaced our bmw starter following your instruction and it works perfectly!
Awesome! I'm so glad I could help!
Great instruction. I just changed the starter on my wife's 2007 328i Sport Wagon this afternoon. Thanks for your help.
Thanks, I'm really glad I helped you out!
Just replaced my starter with the help from your video! I was dreading having to do so much removal, not needing to fully pull out the intake manifold made my life so much easier! Might be a 2-year-old video, but it was a huge help!
Just replaced my starter on a BMW X3 (N52) and this method "Shortcut" does make it a lot easier ... a little tip here buy an E14 wrench for the aluminum screw in the back and a 12" to 15" extender for the socket on the front aluminum bolt ... also don't forget to buy a new set of aluminum bolts... U$10 at the BMW dealer... Thank you JD Cars !!
Glad to help!
Great video! It helped a lot! Thank you so much for putting this together! It helped a lot! 👍👍 Boy, getting the top bolt out of the starter was not easy!
Thanks for the video!! Struggled with the bolt in the back. Used an E14 rachet and made it 100x easier!!
Glad the video was helpful! Thanks for sharing the E14 ratchet tip!
Well done video, very helpful in assisting my DIY repair!
Just followed this video and replaced my dead starter. Took me a lot longer than it took you but the directions were spot on! Thanks!
Glad you found the video helpful and were successful with your replacement!
very clean video (no drama there!). You got to the point. Very much appreciate that
Glad you liked the video!
What A 🐐👌🏼 Did everything exactly plus new battery bt when I went to start it was having hard time turning on until I gave it a little gas as I pushed the start button what u think that could b test drove for a while and everything’s good jus wanted to know what may have been the issue in case i encounter it again thanks though
Great job my friend you made this job at ease thank you
Hey wanted to say you so much for taking the time to make this video. Did my starter tonight and it went really smoothly and alot easier than I thought! Appreciate it!
I'm glad you found the video helpful! I know I was nervous when doing my replacement!
Great video took mines out waiting for new starter comes today. Im using same bolts for starter and not changing the gaskets hope thats ok.
really appreciate how much he explained every detail of how to remove everything really help
Glad I could help Jonathan!
Thanks to this video I saved ATLEAST 1000$ 🙏 Ordered the parts I needed, everything came out to 125$ .. waiting on it to come in, then it's all about work 💪
WOOHOO! This is what we love to hear! So glad to hear the video made your repair easier 🤟
Wow!! Just changed one out! Your video was a huge help thank you so much
Awesome! I’m glad my video was helpful!!
Thanks I do the job in my cars little difficult when remove the screw one front other back
This video is amazing. Learned a ton about my car just watching it. I stupidity payed to have mine replaced. Now the idle is going wild.. the mechanic must have cracked the ccv hose. That's my next adventure. Always something. Thanks for the video.
I have a bmw turns the damper with the starter, and has already tried another battery and with jumper. My bmw 328i 2010. Remove the multi channel run and lower the spark plug but I see that the damper gets hard the starter the coals look good. How hard should the crankshaft be?
Thanks for the video. I just completed (maybe... haven’t started it yet). Closed the trunk after disconnecting the battery. Have to try folding down the seat or jumping it long enough to unlock. Anyway, I had a hard time with the bracket under the intake and then getting the back bolt out on the starter. I ended up getting it with a flex ratchet.
Glad to help! Smart idea with the flex ratchet!
It did start, by the way. The '08 has a hidden key hole under the trunk lid so it wasn't hard to open the trunk. I think the '09 and forward models don't have the key option. Back on the road - thanks again! Oh yeah, one of the hardest things is fitting the battery compartment back together! Still don't have that completed.
I have a 2004 BMW 325ci/convertible. I had to put the top down manually (long story) and now want to reconnect the motor ability. I cannot find anything at all about how to do this and I thought you may know. Thank you! Holly
Great job bro !🔥
All the information and straight to the point
This was extremely helpful and save me over $600. by doing it myself, I watched it several time and referenced it off my iPad once I got started. The most difficult thing was the bolt that was on the backside by the transmission, after several attempts with every type of ratchet, swivel and extension i resorted to a box wrench that actually fit over the stud and allowed me enough room to loosen the bolt and still get my hand on the wrench giving me enough room to work, once i accomplished that it was all down hill, but i couldn't have done it without the video provide. thanks for taking the time to produce it was a lifesaver.
I'm glad you found the video helpful! Good job completing the repair! Thanks for watching!
Phenomenal video. You’ve earned a subscriber good sir
Thank you. This video helped me a bunch. Job done.
hello what is that black wire to the left of positive battery cable..I have a 2008 328i sedan and i dont have that on ,y car..it looks like some kind of ground with a black wire and rounded end..a few inches to left of positive starter battery cable?? what does it go to?
Hey man. Great video. I saw that you included gaskets in the description. What was the reason for that? Thanks.
Thanks dude. I just finished this on my e92.
Glad to help man
I had a little trouble with getting the bolt out in the back, like you stated the E14 wouldn’t fit on and with the 11mm wrench I ended up stripping it. Any idea on how to get it out ?
Fantastic video! Thanks!
I have 2010 328i XDrive SULEV, black on black! Is the starter located in the same location!
Awesome video! Thank you Bro!
Really helpful video thank you!
u really helped me out thanks man !!
Glad to help!!
Thank you for this post!.. appreciate it. Very well done video
Glad it was helpful!
Great service you provide, JD, by showing this shortcut, with excellent guidance - thank you!! I'm getting sparks when I tap the starter (afterwhich it starts), do you think it could be corrosion or a ground problem? Can I get a socket w flex-drive or extension on the electrical connection WITHOUT removing the intake?
Any advice appreciated, I'm not convinced it's actually the starter, tapping it w rod makes it start, I'm thinking corrosion somewhere...
I think you are correct...that sounds to me like a loose and/or corroded connection. I would recommend checking the connections to the starter, and cleaning them if necessary.
Excellent walkthrough
Thank you!
you are the man bro good work...
Thanks bro!
Im looking to get the same starter how has it been workinh any problems?
Great video. Saved me some time on my 08 E90 sedan.
One caveat for others who are doing this procedure: Be careful to get the correct bolt when removing the top starter bolt. You're essentially going by feel, because you can't really see behind the engine. There is a second E14 bolt back there in the same vicinity. It's a little higher and easier to get to than the starter bolt. It's one of the bolts that connects the transmission to the engine, and it's torqued to hell and hard to remove. Don't remove that one. Reach lower to find the starter bolt. Don't ask how I know.
Thanks for the video, JD.
Did you have any issues removing the starter bolt? I started trying to remove that bolt with an 11mm wrench which started to strip the bolt. I ordered an e14 wrench and took an attempt at the bolt again, but seems super tight and hard to get loose. I am scared I will strip the bolt again... any suggestions??
@@xdoutrex
Make double sure you're on the correct bolt. If using an e14 wrench, it should fit tightly -- no way to strip it, IMO. Use something to get more leverage -- some type of extension. I used the two box wrench trick: czcams.com/video/SDI4j1LgqV4/video.html
Bro my starter won't come out and I was about to do that one next now I need to research it hella because now I don't know if this is a prank or not but I'm assuming it went bad for you
I've watched nearly all your video's im curious if all these mods you do will work for an 2011 BMW 328I.And is the wiring still the same? Thanks.
Yup, almost everything is the same! The 2011 is the facelifted version of the E90, but it is still the same car.
So hoping for license to better job so could afford out of pocket expenses when won’t start or leaks coolant. Thanks for overhaul audio helps maintain focus and speeding threw concept parts that are difficult
Nicely done brother great video
Thanks! Glad to be of help
You should check out and do a install of m tech spot bumpers
Excellent presentation 👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Your shortcut is great! A lot less stuffs to remove to get at the starter. It encourages me to go ahead and replace the starter myself. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks! I'm glad the video was of help!
Great video. helped a lot. mine is a e90 330i a bit different but otherwise great video. Keep it up!
Thanks man!
What size are the bolts needed? And were can i get them?
Beautiful car, beautiful accents
Thank you!
Great video
💯👌
Wow looks easy 🔥
Great video - check your PCv hoses while you in there and be very careful they get bridle and break easily
Thanks for the tip!
I second that. They break easy and the car idles like crap if you have a leak. They are also expensive ($100+) and have some sort of a heating coil so you can't just replace with rubber hoses.
Great video. I am a novice when it comes to car maintenance and this was a tuff job for me. Without your video I'd be lighter in the wallet by $450. Nice dolly shots in the beginning.
7buffalo6 thank you, I appreciate it! I'm glad I helped you out replacing your starter!
it only took me 2 hours with removing the entire manifold the hardest part is the two plastic pipes for the ccv other than that its pretty smooth my starter would turn the engine once then start grinding luckily it was the second time ive had to replace the starter so it was under warranty just had to change myself
Nice job!
Any tips for getting the back bolt out on Starter I’m having trouble been trying to get it out for 2 hours
Use a thin ratchet box wrench
quite impressed with your mechanical skills at this age
faizisarea thank you very much, I appreciate it!
Great video! Thank you very much. Removing those studs was ingenious. Would like to add some hints that worked well on my 06 330i. I disconnected the positive cable on the passenger side, which allowed more slack w manifold. For the top bolt, mine is an e16, I used a 12 pt 7/16 ratchet wrench that fit perfectly tight. For the bottom bolt, I taped it to the socket with one round of electrical tape to get it started without falling out. Best diy video I have ever utilized. Thanks again!
I'm glad the video was helpful! Thanks for adding your clever tips & tricks!
I wish I had watched this video before I did take off the whole manifold to replace the starter. That was nightmare to disconnect a few plastic pipes under the intake manifold. Removing the studs is the best way. Nice job. One request have you done the oil pan gasket replacement? Can you post oil pan gasket replacement diy? It seems the short cut is lower the subframe instead of disconnecting from suspensions.
Sorry you didn't see the video sooner! I will probably be doing the oil pan gasket in the near future. I will try to go the shorter route.
Thank you, if it weren’t for you My car would be in the shop I just got done fixing the car thanks a lot
Hey man. How do you take the negative line off the battery????
I unscrewed the bolt but that stuff is still fitted on there
Sounds like its stuck.. try loosening it with a rubber mallet
You really saved me thanks a lot
Glad to help!
I had a question, does anybody know the torque specs in lbs for the starter & manifold bolts?
Bro I see other videos taking like 32 minutes or so to take everything off and this guy just makes it easy; my started is starting to give out and ima follow this video to hopefully do it quick cause I don’t like taking a long time for one thing. Also where did you order your starter bolts?
Im doing my wifes 330..i c u didnt disconnect the power wires going over the intake as others do in some other videos..great info here.cheers.P
Should have did a before trying to start and after replacing the stator bro
Hey man im a big fan of yours and i could use your help! I also replaced my starter and the car starts great now but after i start it the whole car shakes for about 15 seconds before it settles. What could be the problem?
Sounds like a rough idle... check out my VANOS video!
My starter is not coming out after removing the bolts. Think it is the corrosion. I have tried spraying WD 40, and prying with a flathead. Could the teeth be stuck to the flywheel? If not what else should I do, if someone can pls suggest
Are u able to access from underneath or no
I used an e16 to take it off I struggled for 3 days with the e14
Thanks man you really helped me
I'm glad I could help!
is it mandatory to replace the seals?
can you do this with n52v
Saved me $700 good video
That’s what I’m talkin about! Glad we could help 💪
You a badass bro! ❤️❤️
Thanks brotha!
Where do you get the new bolts for the starter ? Since you can’t use the same ones
Link in description
An 11 meter wrench? My, that's a big one. I didn't realize you could remove the intake studs. That would make things a lot easier. That's a good tip for anyone doing this repair. You also need to be careful of the brittle hoses under the intake manifold because they crack easily, make the car idle like crap and cost more than the starter.
Yup removal of the studs makes it a lot easier! Definitely need to be careful of the hoses!
What was the tool needed to remove the studs again? I may have to do this soon. I know I can watch the video again just figured I can ask and have it written. Thanks
E6, its a female torx bit
How about the line with blue connector?
Great video...tks
Thank you very precise
hello i have a 2006 525xi bmw is it the same method for my car??
Yes it is!
That's a klean engine bay homie 😎
Hey jd my car starts up perfectly when it's cold then when I drive around for about an hour or more and shut it off she doesn't restart if I need it to ride then ..I have to wait about 15-20 minutes then she starts up again ..I was thinking it may be something with the key but I can unlock and lock everything perfectly the battery is new in both the key and car .. so idk ..my last thing is the stater .. it doesn't click its silent like there's no power getting to it .. I did look at the terminals today after I got home and they look to be rusty which is weird because water doesn't get down there at all ..at least it's not supposed to be wet there .. maybe someone wet the engine and water ended up getting over the terminals and causing this issue I now have ..
Yes, it sounds like an electrical issue for sure. I would check over all of your fuses and have someone scan the computer for errors.
@@JDCarsChannel fixed it.. main fuse for relay was going out slowly ..
As soon as I saw you using the lawn mower to pull in the car I said "I like this guy" ;-)
Hahahaha sometimes you gotta get creative with the lawn mower
