  • We got our hands on the much sought-after Shaper Origin, courtesy of its maker, and asked designer and Core77 contributor Randall Tyner to review it with an honest, critical eye toward the Origin's ultimate pros and cons, especially comparing it against a larger gantry.

    This is an awesome breakdown.
    I don't have Gantry CNC machine (and won't likely be building my own anytime soon) but your breakdown of pros and cons are applicable to folks seeking to compare the Shaper Origin to 'conventional CNC' and well considered against any makers time. Your concise and direct format in this video are EXCELLENT.

    This is a great overview of the pros and cons of the Origin. I own an Origin for my small shop and the small size and portability are simply brilliant as I don't have enough room for a large traditional CNC. I don't use it every day but it paid for itself in very short order. I'm not experienced in CAD programs, but the onboard software has been unbelievably useful. In short, it's an amazing tool to have in my arsenal, even before I'm ready design full bore projects in Fusion 360.

    I purchased my Origin and have had it for almost a year. It is an awesome tool and has its place in the shop or even on a job site.
    I feel comparing it to a traditional cnc can be missleading since it is in many way different. Size, portability and work flow. I honestly think it has a place in many shops and the updates keep making it even better. It is truly a smart tool.

    You can make your own shaper tape btw. I talked to the guys in SF. There's nothing special about it it's just a domino pattern. You can take a picture of them and randomize them and reprint it on your own tape. Better yet if you got a handheld printer you could just save the files on there print them on the piece of wood that you're working on and sand off the print later.

    • @ernstlemm9379
      @ernstlemm9379 Před 2 lety

      Why not print A4 or A3 sized paper with domino's? A decent laser printer is off max 1mm each meter.

    I am pleased to see your comments and only make me want one. The trouble is, I live in Australia and they won't sell me one, even though they are in England and Europe and our voltage is the same. I have been following Shaper since it started and just love the concept and versatility of the unit and the software upgrades. I am always watching CZcams and learning the use of it and the upgrades. What do I have to do to get one?????

    Hi, I am wondering if the shaper can easily do a cut with a variable depth. for example a straignt line but startartin with a depth of 1mm and gradually going deeper.

    To address the problem of routing a recess larger than the base be addressed by adding a larger supplemental base? Would the Shaper be able to automatically adjust to the additional thickness of a supplemental base?

    • @ken_4860
      @ken_4860 Před 5 lety

      It is theoretically possible to add a wider supplemental base. The Origin has a superb Z-axis “touch off” feature that works by slowly lowering the bit until the Origin’s base is just barely lifted up off the work surface. The lift-up seems to be detected by a small pin on the underside of the base. You would have to make sure that the barely protruding pin can do its job. You could do that by putting a loose scrap exactly the thickness of your supplemental base under the pin during “Z-touch”. However, a better overall strategy might be to hog out large areas some other way. Or plan your cuts so that base-support remains until the last possible moment. Note that hogging out large areas with a trim router at, say, a 1/4” depth of cut per pass is boringly time consuming, and no computer software in the world can help. One caveat: for the machine vision algorithms to work most accurately, the bottom surface of the Origin should be in the same plane as the tape all around your work piece. Adding a supplemental base, which lifts the machine, might screw that up.

    • @randytyner
      @randytyner Před 5 lety +1

      Yes and no. I tried it by taping a thin board to the bottom that would span the gap. The issue was that the board would flex and snag on everything around it. If I had used aluminum or a fancier jig and a better prepared workspace, then it might have worked. You will lose some depth. The other option is to carefully plan the cuts so there is always something to balance the Shaper on. I pointed it out in the video because with a gantry router this is not an issue. So, if you were coming from that perspective, it is something to consider.

    • @johnfrazier9327
      @johnfrazier9327 Před 2 lety +1

      Late reply but max is 1” bit. You can get 8mm collet as well. I made a project recently with 3/4 bowl bit (1/4 shank) and it worked fine. Wish I would have had a flatter bottom as it would have saved me some sanding.

    • @MrTresto
      @MrTresto Před rokem

      No. However some functionality is extra, which I really think should be included, such as the auto depth multiple pass option, a one time 200. The shaper studio is also 100/year which I also think is a bit much considering how much you pay for the tool... You can use other software of course, such as illustrator (though that's a subscription too) or free ones like Inkspace but I tried it and it messed up on my mac, it has compatibility issues. Still trying to find a good option that doesn't have a yearly subscription, makes me feel like I'm a cow being milked...

      @Roderick storey In the original version of the video, I included that information because I agree with you on being upfront about it. It was main cut for timing, and narrative considerations. Since I do not work for Shaper or Core77 and I live far away enough from both, I was not concerned with whether they would agree my views as they were not going to be able to get the Origin back. :) If anything, I may have been too critical.

  • @davidmiller5832
    @davidmiller5832 Před 5 lety +3

    I see you're a fan of Festool.
    You did however fail to understand where Festool customer base really resides in. That's on job sites with contractors. These tools are money makers!
    Just like the plunge saw. These became indispensable on sites where you can't reasonably haul a panel saw to.
    Now they have this new cnc guided router. It's obviously not to take take the place of cnc gantry out of a shop. But on a job site, it will become a major player by bringing computer correction to a small manual tool.
    Just think, on a site with just 5 journeymen getting 35 an hour. That actually cost just over 50 an hour after workmans comp and health insurance. Rolling tools out in the morning is about an hour. Rolling up at the end of the day is an another hour. 5 days a week. That's 50 man hours per week just to set up and break down equipment with just 5 guys. 50 an hour, thats a cost of 2500 a week.
    Festool Thrives on job sites. Less set up time than average tools and less equipment to do many different tasks.
    I Absolutely love Festool. But on a job site. I rarely use them in my shop. It's just easier to use a panel saw, gantry cnc, jigs and templates.
