Hamburg is one of Germany's most advanced cities for walkability. That's the bad news.

  • Hamburg is building some impressive bike lanes, just not consistently. And the city also fails in enforcement on its few car-free streets. I spoke with some of the people driving the call for walkability, including some folks behind a car-free neighborhood.

Great video. As in many cities, the change is just too slow - I hope what's Paris doing will motivate other cities to start implementing good bike infrastructure quicker.

In most cities in the US it would be illegal (zoning laws) to build a car-free neighborhood like what they are trying to do, as well as unfeasible (lack of mass transit).

The thing with Hamburg is that everything that is done is in the city centre. I live just 4-5km outside of the center and have to take one of the major arterial roads in east-west direction almost every day. For most of the ride, there is really only the most basic infrastructure you can think of. For a good stretch, pedestrians and cyclists have to share about 1,50m of space.

Many North American cities have the same approach as Hamburg. No cycle infra in the suburbs.

Exactly what I wrote on RMTransit lately. To solely praise Hamburg for its public transit could only come from people in the good neighborhoods and where tourists are around. Cities4you does a much better job, balancing the good examples with the usual senseless car centric planning.
The transit South of the City was disconnected for months just because one truck burnt out under a critical bridge.
And don't get me started on the Elbbrücken and the Elbtower in general.

@@mardiffv.8775 It is not just the suburbs and not just bike infrastructure which is chronically under funded. Just leave the the tourist places and nice neighborhoods.
South from the Elbe: Wilhelmsburg, Harburg etc. belongs to Hamburg - it is not the usual sprawl. It is just not considered important enough.

@@beneficialtechnology5551 Now that you mentioned it. 5 years ago I cycled through Harburg. I could tell not many rich people lived in Harburg, none at all.

I can't wait to see this pedestrian plaza once it gets built!

Great video, and I have some scary memories from living in Hamburg in the 90's. I'd have hoped that the bicycle lanes would by now be actually accessible to people with bicycles. Things more slowly, until they move quickly.

As someone who was born and raised in Hamburg and moved to berlin a year ago, I have to correct the false flaming of Berlins bike network. While I absolutely hated riding my bike in Hamburg because 80% of the time it was not drivable (like in the blog post) I was super surprised at how good and actually good connected the bike paths were in berlin instead.

As far as i know, there are two countries that are really serious about building a car-free or bicycle infrastructure. Namely, Holland and Denmark, Holland builds ambitious bicycle garages that are out of this world and spending billions of € on general bicycles' infrastructure.

Man, I'm happy to see people who are willing to try so hard, I haven't even started and I've already given up on helping my Curitiba, I met an organization that has been trying this for a long time (CicloIguaçu) and they couldn't. I've given up on everything and I have no hope.
My plan was to have a vasectomy and limit my suffering.

11:43 and Berlin! At Kantstrasse, a very busy street, a single lane for cars, in the middle parking cars and on the right side a whole lane for bikes only. Hamburg really needs to improve its infrastructure smarter. Repainting the street at the alster won’t even be very cost-heavy and so much safer and better for everyone involved.
