In the 1950s, The Century Series defined an era of aviation during the Cold War, charting a metamorphosis from one era to another. Jets were in their infancy, and many milestones, including the sound barrier, loomed large. In an arms race with the Soviet Union, a rising superpower, the U.S. got to work developing a variety of impressive fighter jets, now known as the Century Series. Starting with the F-100, the first production airplane to break the sound barrier in level flight, we explore how the century series pioneered new airplane designs, including the aerodynamic coke bottle shape made famous by the F-102. The F-104, a missile with a man in it inspired a generation of pilots. The F-105 looked like a fighter but was a bomber in disguise. As a series, their legacy is evident in modern fighter jets.

Split between the F-101B and the F-105. The F-101B is just a pretty aircraft all in all, and the F-105 is a cold-war powerhouse.

I deployed to Turkey in 1988 and served with the Turkish Air Force 191 Filo equipped with F-104Gs. In high school it was the most exotic aircraft I knew about. Twenty years later it still impressed me and I relished every moment spent with that jet. It was a real rush approaching the jet in a hardened aircraft structure with the engine running and you and your partner had to simulate releasing the weapon on the centerline rack. Careful you didn't get cut on the leading edge of the wing or sucked into the engine all the while unable to hear anything but the roar of a J-79 at idle.

Hey if you want some good info on the F-106 you can go to the youtube channel Bruce Gordon. He flew the F-106 as well as the F-102 and F-100. You can also go to the Fighter Pilot Podcast and they have a series on each of the century fighters where the host interviews pilots that flew the aircraft.

I've heard all of this before. But this presentation has made the century series story a great tale again. It would have been awesome to see a flight line and sky filled with all these silver jets in service at the same time. And including the different transport aircraft and bombers.

Your presentation was excellent. The little educational side bars (how the sonic boom works, etc...) altered the routine and kept the vidio from becoming stagnet and lengthy. Great job!

Highly disappointed that you guys/gals missed a couple of the Century Series Fighters. I spent most of my five enlisted years working on the MA-1 system in the F-106. Would have been nice to see something on the Voodoo and the F-110A Spectre.

The F-110A being redesignated as the F-4 was the work of SecDef McNamara. He should have left it as the Air Force first numbered it. A couple of other back-seaters that I flew with in Fresno had spent time in the Voodoo. Almost a forgotten aircraft these days.

@MBailey1977 There was an RF-101 recce bird, just like there was an RF-4. The two-seat Interceptor version was an integral part of Aerospace Defense Command. The CF-101 was the Canadian Forces version for the Air Defense mission.

@@douglasbawden3134 I met a former F-101 pilot with the 18th FIS after moving to Cordova, Alaska in 1990. I greeted him with a "Hey, I saw those airplanes when we moved to Grand Forks AFB in 1970, just before they departed, replaced by the 460th FIS from Klamath Falls with F-106s. The latter was acclaimed by Col. Jack Broughton, as it had the better of the systems compared to the other fighters in the century series, including the F-110/F-4. Burt Rutan ejected from an F-4 while working on spin testing at Edwards AFB. His brother Dick flew the F-100, and had patches made that read "105 Missions North Vietnam (airplane planform silhouette) F-100" that was also painted on the nose of his Long-EZ. "Misty 40" flew west this year...

Government bureaucrats got so upidy about things that didn’t matter. Me262 was designed as a bomber but used as an interceptor. From then on focus should have been narrowed down to multi role jet fighter aircraft.

Wow! That young woman gave one of the worst explanations of “sonic boom” that I have ever encountered. I’m not completely convinced that she understands it. I feel certain that anyone who did not understand it before her explanation would not understand it after. She was so busy trying to give a dreadful analogy, that nothing but confused analogy remained, after she finally stopped talking. At least with that old Starfighter driver, we got to see a superb example of the culture. With her, that explanation was her only reason for being there. I hope the 99s weren’t watching. I bet they were universally offended.
