aliens day one gaumont odeon screen 2 , Dolby Stereo CP50 using left/right half surrounds , something most 99.999% home cinemas can't do as the decoding or switching isn't built in and i have to use the professional version myself as ex retired projectionist CIC/UCI and warner bros ,
recreating the original overhead surround , simple yet complex wiring and easy switcher box , to bypass dolby dsu matrix decoder that does it wrong . atmos encode/decode for overhead discrete fine , but dolby surround is technical flawed and centre with 4.2.4 is still flawed phasy whooshy i have to use professional Dolby CP200 CP500 CP750 for proper 4.2.4 , no current model not even stormaudio or trnnov can do 4.2.4 in same exact way ,
below surround matrix steering or below surround passive
i see you fitted below subs may as well add below surround same speaker coaxial and behind the seating and one in front of back row and another in front of the front row , x6 so sound comes from below , my idea 1998 , below surround
now i want see aliens original , Dolby digital , the dts on blu is same as AC-3 its not bad remix to make the format 42 of the mono discrete surrounds into stereo surrounds
also i use a switcher that can convert the stereo surrounds to mono , try doing that
below surround is final for home cinema not much else left now home cinema or even cinema can use now , home cinema mine is better than atmos down town that is poorly eq tuned i need wear earplugs its deafening , my home THX JBL way better since i used to be projectionist

I definitely did it "wrong" on the previous theater attempt. I thought a bunch of insulation in the walls would do it and I was so underwhelmed with the results. Such as improvement with this theater's approach after reading up on the forums.

C-4 grade commercial home cinema 🧨 🧨. Sean D.I.A.H, and wow what an outstanding job!!! Sound proofed, triple mat black for absolutely no reflections, 8-12” JBL subs as butt kickers to go along with 4-18” subs (absolutely insane) all homemade😆😆. As amazing as his gear, and room condition is, I am truly blown away by his riser build. It is on another level (no pun intended). This is the first room I’ve seen with a riser build like this and it is pure genius. With the 99db efficiency of his gear this room gets up to speed fast and furious (pun intended)😁. I would definitely love to experience the depth charge scene from U571 in this room. I am sure it would madness... Hat’s off to Sean for such an high powered and phenomenal home cinema build. What a great return to the home cinematic universe for you Sarkis (greatly missed you my dear friend)👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

      @YOyoYOhowsDAjello Před 3 lety +2

Tommy, thank you for all the callouts to the details that went into this build. The riser was indeed the trickiest part to plan out and I'm so glad it came together in the end. At first I was planning to invert the 12" subs so there wouldn't need to be a significant first riser row, but the subs just wouldn't fit given the mechanicals under the seats. Back to the drawing board for riser heights, screen viewing angles, etc.
I haven't put it U-571 yet but the blu-ray is sitting on the shelf waiting. I remember it was a classic demo back from my SVS days and I should give it another demo now. Thank you!

With some glue and clamps, you can assemble the boxes. Get a subwoofer driver from parts express, an amplifier to power it, and a few other odds-and-ends and you can get huge bang for the buck.

@@YOyoYOhowsDAjello Not really only just that the sound on the mono matrix was covered at many angles and always seemed that it appeared to circle around along the sidewall surrounds , but that is the hass-effect due. okay robocop, where that ed-900 or whatever it was comes in the office conference room made me flinch and place my hands above my head in few seconds where camera is at lower angle and it appears to be walking overhead with the servo motor noises it made.
It is simple just rig up a cluster of the same speakers along the sidewall as that is the proper way to do it. Your room could do with at least 3 to 4 speakers on each sidewall and x4 on the back-wall and x6 attached to the ceiling or flush in the ceiling (which is how it was in screen 2) that screen no longer exists was gutted into halves in 1989 cos odeon thought more screens sells more tickets but the newer screens was lousy sounding. the original screen was at the front while the x3 shoebox screens was behind it and the screen size of screen 2 that then became screen 6, was really a VHS letterbox size reduced, dreadful odeon management decision.
Think is an average atmos avr or even a trinnov 32 overrated overpriced can't do multiple sound format functions that mimics classic Dolby Stereo speaker layouts. You got do it yourself.
ALIENS now that sounded eerie just after the fox fanfare. The james horner music appeared to start with that, how can I put it? There is a music element on the track that appeared to come from behind, it made me look turn around and I was seated around middle of the auditorium on a centre-line.
So all the surrounds in screen 2 would be coming off from the mono matrix surround on that Dolby Stereo CP50 which is common. The whole cinema now is home to the pigeons and look carefully at the ceiling in certain areas can still spot the where the x6 Overhead surrounds was located.
Screen 1 upstairs was cinerama curved left over from 70mm, 1970, fitted with 35mm cos I guess they figured 70mm was phased out for cinerama, the surrounds was located flush in the ceiling, x6 overhead surrounds and I did a video showing a picture of screen 1, rant video, "stop calling your speakers atmos speakers" - it is a bad marketing from dolby labs that has really pissed me right off.
I got a job at UCI cinemas around late december 1989 which was local, UCI tower park and the unique thing about it to me that is was all ten screens had EV electro-voice LCR and Overhead surrounds and that was uncommon placement for the speakers located attached to the ceiling and guess what? In more less the same spacing between each speaker and more less same as what it is today. only dolby labs swept it under the doormat which is why they have millions now Brainwashed to their tune. That is why I am pissed of when people call their speakers atmos speakers. It is a speaker and the crossover makes the speaker that is the tuning of the speaker or you can tinker with DSP crossover that has way more advantage over passive crossover turning but good parts used for passive but it will still leak certain sound frequencies into the bass driver or midrange or tweeter, I seem to be rambling no now.... lol The Overhead surround at UCI was neat and again using the mono matrix, via the Dolby Stereo CP55 with SRA5 Spectral Recording, Vic V 35mm, auto rewind cake platters and slide projector for advertisement and acoustics was good for 90dB for the design .... which is why when sold and owned by empire cinemas all screens was altered the speakers all changed to QSC and okay they seemed to have increased amp power it is felt more now but nowhere near to THX. The only flaw it was heard from one screen to the next least in two larger screens 5 and 6. While in screen 6, titanic (rubbish 3d I throw the glasses away watched it blurry) I was only listening to see if the digital hard-drive was anywhere near to when I projected it at warner bros village at bristol 12 plex, in SR-D. The picture was rubbish digital noise artifacts. There is only one real format, 35mm.
I heard screen 5 that sodden marvel rubbish avengers, not only hear it but feel it in the floor, a concrete floor, where the original was and some idiots placed wooden false floor that was butt-tight against the sidewalls so it acted like a transmission for sound waves low frequency sound waves and was distracting and Never again will I go back to that lousy cinema where some £7.8 million was spent, I mean Wasted on bad sound acoustics. Goes to prove money never buys perfection or happiness. It made me feel down, frown depressed. anyway good riddance to that cinema that was sold to cineworld when the ceo of empire cinemas when bat-shit crazy and had Empire Leicester Square, Empire 1, (THX) gutted up for trash rubbish imax, I meant to say, LieMax tv small tiny diny sized titchy screen.
Oh back to the odeon screen 2, the empire strikes back 1980 with sidewall rear and overhead surrounds. when the falcon escapes the ice cave hideout when darth vader, walks in the sound of the falcon appeared to off-screen travel along the surrounds from back to front when it is seen on-screen for few seconds. try doing that in your atmos avr home theatres everyone cos you don't have the proper Dolby pro-logic anymore, I run a Dolby Stereo MP matrix that is with my Dolby CP500 and Dolby Stereo CP200, sure I have a rubbish Denon AVC-X8500H and it is not my opinion it is Rubbish and even a trinnov 32, would be RUBBISH £20 grand waste of money. Can a trinnov 32 do proper Dolby pro-logic Dolby Stereo, I don't think so.

@@YOyoYOhowsDAjello part 2 as my post was very, very long.
I wait for prices to come down. it is almost waste of been almost ten 10 years of dolby lousy labs atmos.
atms only decodes certain sounds be it sound effects only for overhead or sometimes music is added but!, but! If anyone isn't looking carefully at what is on-screen and off-screen then most atmos mixes to encode t decode sound appalling bad with such bad sound continuity that doesn't match the movie or has bad sound effects editing where sometimes you hear it above in the next scene it is not on the overhead surrounds, it is a shambles of a mess, and most suckers have brought into it and even prising dolby labs. ??? suckers born every second. Well maybe a bit harsh to call them suckers. They just don't know what to, look for and listen for.
A lot of the sound in these movies depending on scene and location should have a discrete below surround channel or underneath surround channel that is located by smaller speakers placed on the floor facing upwards or I can get into more of this in moments now.... or flush in a wooden floor and you have a wooden seat riser floor, You Can Do It! Myself they are laying on the floor small JBL control 1, for a matrix below surround, It ain't perfect but least it was cheap as fish and chips.
I matrix off the sidewall surround and do you remember recall a thing called Dolby EX? Well as it happens to be, I came up with that. The idea sparked when I was in projection with UCI tower park, in projection and always fascinated with the mono matrix surround, I would stand near the port window and switch though the booth sound monitor, listening to the surrounds to how good their where, with regards to crosstalk where often faint + phase signal is faintly heard against the ambient where louder sound effects would mask it.
indiana jones and the last crusade, 70mm Dolby SR SS bothered me at the other local cinema early in the year and was booked in at UCI later in the year after it had its months of showing in 70mm at the Canon/ABC Bournemouth screen 1, the stereo surrounds bothered me? Between where an airplane circles around from screen channels though to surround right then left surround or Left-half Right-half I got a little disorientated and it sort of eluded me at the time. When I got the job with UCI, it was a day can't recall which day I got an idea? The idea reminded on ice for number of years, after I left UCI after a year and got another projection job last one with Warner Bros, '98, but soon after left them. I was about to get a Millenium dts decoder and realized I could do this idea that I was thinking about so I connected my Yamaha DSR70Pro to the surround, the stereo surround outputs and fitted up x5 speakers on the back-wall where commonly x6 would be used and x2 per each sidewall of a very small room. Run the pink noise balanced best I can as the speakers where from a closed down shopping centre pa speakers with transformer fitted that I re-wired them and front was JBL control 5 LCR matched with JBL 4645 18" cinema size.
I ran Goldeneye 1995, THX laserdisc, dts. wow, wow it works. I was ducking, flinching side to side and waving my hands around it was wow. That was 1998 nearly a full year before Dolby EX was announced. I phoned Dolby labs new york, cos the uk offices was closed, time-zone. I spent 30 mins on the phone with now Backstabber dolby labs guy, eric kristofferson, (former dolby labs) yes I don't like it when stabbed in the back, my idea stolen or I don't remember ever saying about, go and capitalise on it, without giving me a Single f- credit for the idea? dolby labs are crooks. I been telling that story since 1999 when I saw it appearing in a home cinema choice magazine, I was pitty angry Red faced pissed off with larver pouring with flames out of my nose.
So now you know where the idea for Dolby EX came about and the pro version is different than home cinema. The pro version uses 4 channels the home version only uses 3 channels of matrix decoding. I was using the 4 channels at the time, while everyone in 2000 was using a 3 channel watered down version.
Today I use two cheap as fish and chips Dolby CP45 for decoders connected to (my system is complex) for the side surround and back surround for extra decoding or extracting the centre-phantom so I can free the centre phantom from the stereo if I so desire? Place a new single channel middle of the rear back surround or with the side-surround that used to be the "Surround channel" and still is depending on what format configuration your going to use?
I now extract the centre phantom from the side-surround and the speaker is placed Below underneath the cinema seats, Irwin rocker seats. and it works for most movies. It ain't perfect of course but lot better than most home cinemas and even cinemas or dubbing stages.

@@YOyoYOhowsDAjello The overhead surrounds at UCI sounded neat and was part of what I found out from someone on yt, it wasn't only UCI with overhead surrounds another one located at portsmouth on south coast had them as well in fact saw the video and the auditoriums same design even projection uses same Vic V same Dolby CP55 which was common at time since the new Dolby CP65 wasn't released till few years in the early 1990's. CP200 was made for 35mm/70mm and since the cinemas was 35mm a cheaper CP was used.
I heard the overhead surrounds was part of an experiment.
auditoriums was designed with a narrow entrance at the back and then it widens out in the middle.

Very much admire the double walls and ceiling. However, if you're going to go through all the trouble why don't you should recess and hide the speaker connector panels?

Yes, they're free air rather than in an enclosure. If you want to learn more about these setups, search for "BOSS" on AVSforum. The Hideaway Theater thread was where I first learned about them.

Bro how did you made the screen ?

    • @YOyoYOhowsDAjello
      @YOyoYOhowsDAjello Před 3 lety +1

Hi, the screen is made with some 1x3s screwed together with some metal angle brackets. I ordered some acoustically transparent screen fabric and stretches it over with stables to secure it (like making a painting canvas). Then there's a border around that made of pink insulation foam cut to size and wrapped in black velvet.
