By "Dream", do you mean a sort of "state of perfection" / Eden that the character will lose, i.e. the character starts the story happy?
And so "Nightmare" would be a character who starts the story unhappy, e.g. Luke is bored living with his Aunt & Uncle in Star Wars. So a protagonist who is unfulfilled and in some way stagnating? E.g., Neo at his soul-killing office job in The Matrix?

Good questions. I'm left with questions, too.

I'm watching all your videos a bunch and taking notes but I'm still kind of confused, when you say dream or nightmare, do you mean dream = longing/desire/maybe current life they're living, and for nightmare = stuck/unhappy/maybe their fear? if you have a moment would you mind responding with other words besides dream and nightmare - that might help me understand. is dream or nightmare basically the character's current situation?

What does your protagonist want more than anything? What is your protagonist most afraid of?

@@cosmic-fortytwo Hi and thanks! When you say want, are you referring to what they want in story that doesn't reveal itself until later, such as the sorcerer's stone? Or do you mean something more intimate like feeling loved? Or an outer want like opening a bakery?
Also, would a character want to be wanted by others, if they genuinely believed they were unlovable? Or would they want something else?

I wish this concept could've been taught better because I don’t get it.
