I curated a “master journal”. At the end of the year, I go through my “daily journal” and highlight the wisdom and make a list of the takeaways. I record the “best of” in my master journal. It is cool to see the resolutions and growth of years in just a few pages.
wow thats decluttering and actually deeply revisiting things in one swoop. i will try that to review my year. thank you
I struggle with wanting to keep the journals but NOT wanting my private thoughts reviewed by anyone. If I thought they would be read by someone I wouldn't journal authentically.
I struggle with this too. I’ve bought so many journals.
Our family has our Great Grandmother ‘s journal. Have learned so much about her life and the times she lived. Grateful that it was saved by other family members
That sounds like an amazing treasure! 💛
Dawn, I loved that you said you are wanting the Bible to be your main source of inspiration. I need to remember that. Thank you. Always fun to see you two together. 😊
I have a journal that my Grandma wrote that I treasure. When I read it, it is like she's telling me stories she told me when I was a child again.
Wow Dawn, your mention of the concept of "manna" hit me right in the heart. I hold on to so much that I don't need, forgetting that God will meet my needs daily. Thank you.
I felt the same way!
@@MillieVF Same!!
I put books in my “saved for later” on Amazon. I occasionally peruse it and think, “No, I don’t really need that.” Or, “Yes, now I’m going to get it.” Just a little time and perspective helps a lot!
Glad I watched this because it literally gave me permission to get rid of the spiritual books I'm not reading or haven't returned too. Thank you Dawn and Diana
I realized recently, through ruthless decluttering ala Dawn, that I never ever reread my journals. Or notes from Bible studies. I journal daily as part of my Bible reading, but it's for that moment, not for posterity. So I tossed everything, with no regret. I buy cheap journals from Ross also, so I don't feel like I am "wasting" money. It was really great to realize.
I am like this too, the notes I take at church or during Bible reading are my way of processing what I'm hearing/reading, but I don't really need to go back and look at them.
I needed to hear this
I found a box of my old journals when we were moving last year. I skimmed through a couple and PROMPTLY destroyed them! 😂 I did not want anyone stumbling on my rambling thoughts. 😬
Also, I have a pastor friend who has several friends committed to destroy her journals without reading anything when she dies. She mostly journals when distressed or in difficult times and she doesn't want to be remembered for any of that.
I like going back and reading my journals, but the other day I was reading one from a very difficult time. I had fallen hard. So I don't want to read it. Thankfully, I used to write a child’s name in the upper corner if I was recording something about them, so I can just flip to those pages, pull them out and add them to albums, then deal with that journal. But it’s a lot of work to shred or burn journals, and books I’ve written in. And I’m not just tossing them, so it’s a bit daunting. They are neatly stored in their own drawers in my office, in the meantime.
I take notes during every sermon. But not because I plan to go back & study them later. It's to keep me focused during the sermon. I'm very easily distractible 😁 I used to hang on to the notes, but then I realized that I didn't need them, because I've got the Bible 🙂 I have kept a few over the years to use the ideas to write a lesson to present at a ladies' Bible study. But that's about it. In the past, I had a hard time decluttering some religious books & old Bibles. I'm getting better at it. All the info I might possibly need is on the internet!
I'm the same way! It helps me focus, that said with a new baby I haven't been doing it lately, but now I know I can just toss those old journals. Thanks ladies!
The library lets you check out e-books too so don’t forget to check there for the books you’d like to read digitally.
We moved last summer and as I was going through our bookshelf I came across about 15 Beth Moore workbooks from Bible studies that I attended which was from at least 10 yrs ago. I had not once went back and looked at any of them. Yep! I threw them all away! 👍🏼
I DO revisit them!!!! Especially my spiritual journals. So helpful for refocusing when I am in a desert season of faith.
Yes! "how much are we actually reading our bible" - that's the focal point! Thanks for this video Diana & Dawn!
I am in process of writing my memoir from the years of being a widow. I kept about 9 journals through the process. I would have been lost without them!! The death happened 30 years ago.
When we moved last year, I went through a BUNCH of notebooks of sermon notes. I tore out sermons my husband preached (I plan another book from them) and shredded the rest. I still have lots of notebooks from writing classes and conferences but I even made them smaller by tearing out the blank pages left at the end of the notebooks. It was a lot of work and still an ongoing process but worth the time spent.
About a month or so ago I came across a milk crate where I had been keeping notes from past sermons journals all these type of things study guides and I sat down and I went through them in I picked out maybe two or three items that really had meaning and everything else I pitched and it felt so good to get rid of all that clutter. So I just want to thank both of you for what you're teaching this old woman to do. I enjoy watching both of you I have Dawn's channel on too.
Haha, sounds like you’re one step ahead of us! 😉 Love and blessings 💛🙏
Check out Love Packages. They take in Bibles, Christian books and study guides etc and send them to people who need them. Read their website for what they do and do not take, and where their pickup locations are at. I’ve cleared out so much with a good feeling that those who need it will get it.
thank you
I love this for everything spiritual. Sometimes too much input confuses me
I have seven folders with the year on them, and I put my journals (and taxes and any other papers) in those folders and let them compost for seven years. Seven years from now, whatever I was struggling with will have already turned into soil and new plants in my life, and it will be much easier to look at it and select a few pages to keep and let go of the rest.
One thing that helped me when I felt overwhelmed with how many journals I had, was to give myself permission to let go of them. I actually asked my therapist for permission, and she didn't tell me what I should do, but I took that to mean that there's no wrong answer.
Another thing that helped me was that as I heal I'm able to trust more and more that I have a future... graduating from school, I was curious about what the next life stage would be like, and then I found out it was a depressive episode followed by anxiety and powerlessness. So I was hanging on really tightly to things from the past, as a way to salvage what I could of my life. Now I'm going back to school, studying something that interests me, and I can see a future again.
Another thing that helped me, was the idea that Anne Frank edited her journals... what she was doing was more like "journalism" than "journaling". She rewrote things, and she wrote her journal with the thought that they could be published one day. That is not the purpose of my journals, and I don't really have any plans to write a memoir.
I am THE world’s worst information hoarder! I honestly have hand-outs, notebooks, & books from college. I taught English in college for a million years & still have so much from my files & so many books-though I’ve made progress. I like your analogy of manna! And, Dawn, your “Time Will Tell” concept has helped me tremendously in dealing with mail & paper in general. Thanks!
Thank you sweet sisters for this helpful video! My bibles and books are overwhelming me! And I’m planning a move to a new home next year and I have to figure out how to reduce my “inventory”!! Good advice - keep my “special” stuff and let the rest GO!!! Love both your channels! Both of you are a highlight in my week!
I had a shelf worth of books and studies, and journals full of lessons, prayers, Bible verses etc.. and in a rage purge I de-cluttered them. I regret doing that because I could have still used them. However, I don't do lessons frequently anymore, my Bible is always handy, and prayers can be from the heart. I think its mostly the studies I regret tossing, with the notes i took from them. The only books i own now are the Bible, Luther's small catechism, and 2 hymnals.
Good, good thoughts ladies!! I liked the " manna" comparison. You two are so encouraging...thanks so much💞
I have asked my kids (they are 21, 18, 15) if they want my journals. They said no. I don't have a ton of completed journals. I told them that I only journaled sermon notes/Bible study and when I was wrestling my emotions (usually upset). I don't want to re-read what I wrote. My husband has journaled for 35 years. He chronicles his days, his Bible study notes, and has a thanksgiving list weekly. The kids might want to read those - if they can decipher his handwriting!
I so hear ya! My kids are 32,34,39,40. I got rid of all my journals thru different stages of my life. It is such a relief cuz even i didnt wanna go back over it.
Someone once told me to only keep original artwork my kids have made. A coloring page; pre-printed art sheets, pasting cut outs or stickers on pages do not count. I think keeping handwritten journals is priceless if you have room for them. They are precious history books from loved ones.
I have a special shelf I keep my journals. I started a road to get healthy 17 years ago & frequently go back assess where I have progressed (or regressed) in different areas. What I usually don’t go back over are sermon notes. So those are the ones I will get rid of. Journaling has been very powerful in my life. There is something special happening in our brain when we write something down. But I agree-it is like manna-provision for the day! Love you both dearly! You are helping MANY! God is directing your steps.
We need quiet for the Holy Spirit to speak to us. Enjoyed this ladies.
Good advice. 👍 I'm about to revisit my bookshelves, filled with books I referred to for so long as I led women's Bible studies. Also, there are so many gifts recieved that I'm ready to let go. At 75, it's time. Praying others will discover them and be blessed.
I think this is one I will keep coming back to because i write lots of notes and journals and thought I had to keep it all. So much good stuff in this. I particularly feel challenged by not fearing missing out on good information and revelation and just accepting we will miss out on stuff and that's OK. So so good. Thanks to you both!!!
I am so sorry ladies but whatever you say I just love you guys!! I just love to hear you talk….whatever the topic….!!!!! 💜💜
Haha, you have that in common with our mom 💛 Thank you for the smile!
I was at the If Gathering too! Oh my goodness! I just love both of you! I listen to you on my way to work. I alternate between the two of you. Thank you for your inspiration. I have journals and planners from 30:yrs ago that I did t know how to part with. I am decluttering next week during spring break. I will keep what is most important. .Thank you!
THANK YOU I have taken random notes and have several note books. I never go back and re read. I now know what to do with these things. This has been a true stumbling block. P.S. I often take terrible notes anyway.
This is great, Dawn and Diana. I am a journal "junkie", too. This couldn't come at a better time as I declutter my journals and books. These are very hard to declutter, but you are right, Diana. With internet, kindle and all, it can be easier to declutter books. Journals are a bit difficult, though. Reading back on things that happened n in my life remind me that whatever I am in now is a season and I will get over them as I did in the years times were tough. But again, it is true, maybe I should just take time to let all these inputs " settle into my soul and take root." Thanks for this, Diana and Dawn.
Beautiful! It's like Sundays: Faith + Simple Living all over again! 😍
You gals are such gems💖💖💖 Took the words oit of my mouth about digital weeklong conferences, the amount they share befote, during and after... one does not have the time to carve out of one's life & take in that much info!!!! Also my digital clutter of notes I saved about a health condition... and have rarely gone back & looked. When I do think of checking them out, feel overwhelmed & walk away. Precious... thanks... love your advice🙏
Love those pretty cardboard magnetic lid boxes at Michaels. It's a good idea to use those types of boxes/bins to store memory/reference related things like journals.
Dawn your comment about manna truly got me! It was exactly what I needed to hear! Thanks so much for all you do!❤️
After I watch your show I'm going to go downstairs and move out a lot of my classics. My kids are out of college and either did or didn't use them in their own studies. I feel that if I ever miss those old classics (that don't have true meaning for me) that I can easily get them at the library. I also got rid of HUGE amounts of the things I was keeping in case any of my kids ever wanted to see some of the kinds of things I worked on when I worked for the govt. To be honest, I was keeping it all in triplicate because I have 3 kids. I kind of showed it to them and they had zero interest so I let it go. They had about as much interest in my papers as they do in our china and crystal. Zero. You guys are doing good work. Thank you.
Thank you Dawn! Your Truth Truth Lie was an eye opener!! It's so clear now as I am dealing with high volumes on note-taking journals from my past!!! Freedom.....Dawn, maybe you would do an episode on this on your own channel??? Just a thought
This came at a good time for me. I have been decluttering a lot in my house and ignoring a room full of memorabilia including several journals and sermon notes etc. All of this was very helpful and I made some notes for myself so I could get started and stay focused.
I love using the word curate. That’s the hardest thing to get myself to do. I know that I need to go through my sermon in spiritual notes for example, and I would like to have a binder or two with the most meaningful lessons that I’ve learned and I have it organized by tabs in the notebook. I do find that sometimes I am looking for spiritual encouragement and I would love to have that notebook to go back to.
I finally realized that the conference experience of learning and worshipping in community is as important or more so than all the notes I have taken. Thank you for the ideas for curating!
I had to go through and declutter my stash of Bibles. I had two living bibles, one mine that my mother gave me and one was hers when she passed away I inherited. We had a large family bible and one I had gotten when I joined the church as a young teen. I decided to tear out the dedication page from my teenage bible and donate that. I gave my son the large family bible. I decided to keep my mothers copy of the living bible where she highlighted her favorite passages and I just ripped out the front page of the Bible she gave me with the inscription on it. Being down to one bible really feels so good!
Thank you for doing this! I have a box overflowing with journals that I didn’t know what I was gonna do with it so this helps a lot.
I literally did this two days ago!! I feel so validated. I cut out 4 strips from four pages, with just "the gem" that I wanted to go back to and recycled all the other paper. It felt great. I'm not finding value in keeping old notes other than the one time seeing how much growth (or struggle) I had/have from that note time. But then time to let it go!
I read that book in my premarital counselling too! I guess to me it kinda feels like I'm being a "bad" christian when I'm decluttering religions texts or notes or anything God related, this was really helpful.
Marie Kondo said she used to keep a file with favorite info from books and conferences, but realized she already had the key info in her head/heart.
I have ripped out pages of journals when I cleaned out my bookshelf. I had several journals that I started that I only used a few pages of… ripped out the used pages-donated the journal. I had shelves of journals that went to a few inches of pages I felt were worth keeping!
Thank you for this video! I struggle with all that you covered today and the reference to the manna helped reframe my thinking. I'll keep you posted on my success. So, again, gracias muchisimo!
I'm literally working through these categories right now. You ladies have given me the perfect message for what I need at the moment. Thank you.
Diana, I appreciate your comment about this not being a “book reading season”. I feel guilty about the lack of reading that I’ve been doing but I have 3 little ones at home right now! If I do MAKE the time to read, I want it to be the Bible or specifically a Bible Study (social) otherwise, I have laundry to do and noses to wipe, LOL
Doesn’t mean we have to ditch our very favorites, but I can let go of the others without guilt knowing that I can read them in a different season. Sometimes I just need permission, hah
Dawn, I loved your comment about manna - a light bulb moment for me. thank you!
I want to keep my journals for two reasons. I sometimes go back through them and see how far I've come in my spiritual journey. That encourages me. Plus I want to leave a legacy for my children. However, I think it's time to get rid of all the Bible study and conference notes because it's unlikely I'll ever reference them again.
How many personal journals do you have? I think I’m past the 100 mark (7 Rubbermaid’s full) and I’m running out of room! 😬
@@RefreshwithDawn I also have many Rubbermaid totes full of them. I don't have an exact number because many of them I wrote on looseleaf pages. But they fill a couple dozen notebooks.
I have that book “Grasping God’s Word” from when I was in college sitting next to my chair right now, bc I want to read it again! Too funny!
I have just found a lot of my planners from when the kids were young and I had to run them everywhere. I just marvel at how I was able to keep up with all of that. It is kind of hard to even look at those, much less to pitch them. I just pitched all the daily records of homeschooling--where I wrote what we did and questions they asked, etc. It was kind of hard to get rid of those things.
Love this! My journals will accommodate just one container.. than there’s the “maybe box..
Awesome
Thanks
Needed to hear this! Thanks ❤️❤️❤️
This is so helpful!
Great tips, thank you! ❤️
Very good!!! Thank you- super helpful!!!:)
I can so relate lol love this!
You girls are awesome 💖
Such great advise!!! Thank you!
When someone recommends a book, I download the sample onto my Kindle. TFS 🌈
So appreciate the information in this video, I have been waiting for someone to cover it, I have notebooks, pages of notes I have taken when listening to sermons in Church and on line plus the books purchased because someone suggested they would be good and then became overwhelmed with how/where to save it. Now I know, Thanks so much, I will focus more on reading the Bible myself rather then looking through my notes. Thanks so very much
Again I love you ladies! ❣️
Thank you Diana!!!!! So true. Time to declutter!!!!!
Thanks for this video! So helpful.
I am SOOOO glad y’all finally did this!!!
The "Manna" comment is sooooo helpful! Thank you both for your wisdom!
You are glowing Diana🌺
I LOVE mini Cadbury eggs. I go for the dark if I see them. Usually my mom gets me some. They are the best.
Love you both. Such wonderful information always.
This conversation has cleared up a lot !! Thank you both so very much !!!
This was soooo helpful - thank you!!!!
Thanks for the video
Yes!!! Thanks for this one! I haven’t even finished watching it yet! ❤️
I had a stack of prayer journals that I decided to toss. That is one of the few things that I regret decluttering, especially after discovering some deceptions were happening at those times of my life. I have even looked for them, hoping that I only quarantined them since my natural tendency is to be indecisive. They are gone forever, not able to be replaced.
This is so helpful, thank you! Very helpful tips.
"What do I need for today?" So good!
This EXCELLENT advice. LOVE IT!!! Thank you, ladies!
Diana , just love your Easter Guide and Planner ! Thank you and God Bless you and your family!🙏 And God Bless Dawn and her family for her Declutter your home in 15 minutes a day. Love them both! ❤️❤️
Yes, I need help with this! Thank you, ladies 💗
Love love love the parallel with manna. Thank you to 2 of my favorite women. ❤️
This is exactly where I am in my decluttering journey and it was super helpful! Thank you 😊
I love the comment that we need less input and more space for what we are receiving to settle in our soul and take root. So true and beautifully stated!!!!!!
I declutter often and habitually, but this particular area is a rough one for me. Thank-you for your insights.
I got my grandmothers bible with some notes. I have a Bible with Beth Moore notes. Love you ladies.
Ohhhh, thinking of it like manna! So good.
Mana - SO GOOD!
Dear sisters, thank you so much for your inspiring content ! gratitude to both of you 😘🙏✨
Such great tips, thanks ladies! I am not a big journaler, but I have some sermon notes that will be fine to let go of!
I always look forward to your all’s videos (separately or together). I always learn something & in the most enjoyable way. Blessings my dearest utube friends♥️🙏
So nice to watch sisters.
Well done. Good advice. Thanks. :-)
I attended IF as well! Jenni was great.
I still have cassette tapes from 1980s of a church sermon and kept the mini recorder play them! I thought of listening and transcribing or send away to put on CD.
Look into a "Remarkable 2" the only journal or notebook you will need. No more collections. I just got one, and I am working on transitioning over.
Diana is very thoughtful to bring those Cadbury eggs to Dawn!
I got a kick out of Diana telling Dawn she almost ate them before Dawn got there. Good self control, Diana! Love you both!
I just wanted to say I love you ladies! I feel like you guys are some of my best friends. Although you don't know me, I think of you both often 💛 God bless you both!!
Sooo true ! I feel the same way ! Diana & Dawn have enriched my life and always brighten my day !!
Exactly my thoughts! 💗💗💗
I love that…it’s like our manna! Which reminds me…thank you for suggesting The Bible Recap! It is helping me so much! We are almost to the promised land. 🙌
