Hey this was a great documentary and it aged well. I wish there was more on him. I loved playing his concertos in high school and continue to love his music. I still find it super sad that Vivaldi died impoverished and was buried unceremoniously with the smallest cheapest bell to bid him farewell. Heartbreaking.
Those women!! Such a godsend to Vivaldi. Single daughters of wealthy families who could practice day & night, such was their reputation that music lovers from all over Europe came to hear them. Watch the excellent mandolin concerto here with Elena Zabavskaya & Ekaterina Mochalova, all of that ensemble would have been women when it was first played. Same with many or most works. Very moving.
BTW the guaranteed way to sell out an event at Lincoln Center or Carnegie Hall here in NYC is to have a woman musician (or dancer or singer) lead the bill. They get the audiences not because they are women but because for so many now they are the best.

I have the same question. To me, it sounds like the music of Corelli, but I don't know the sonata. It doesn't sound like Vivaldi to me. And if they were being true to chronology Vivaldi wouldn't have been playing his own pieces as a young boy, but older music.
I'm 33 now, but was and always will be an alt kid at heart. I loved Vivaldi as a teenager, even though I was listening to EBM and Industrial music 😅 honestly Vivaldi reminds me of some of the electronic music I listen to, super moody.
