  • South Central Los Angeles now known as South LA is one of the most iconic U.S. neighborhoods. You could also say infamous neighborhoods for its decades of gang violence and crime as well as graffiti art and the LA Riots. So much so that Hollywood has immortalized South LA with some of the most famous films in movie history. However recently South Central has been reinventing itself with help from some amazing non profits that are trying to find new ways to educate students from this blighted area. Now youngsters here are learning all about the new virtual world we live in. Things like Metaverse and blockchain as well as the latest in gaming and music production. Even cryptocurrency and AI. Reporter David Nazar with Sustaining US on PBS visits South Los Angeles and talks with the team from the Metacademy New Tech Education program and the SoLa Beehive.

Thanks for your comment. This is a great effort going on in South LA and definitely a better option than the decades of violence that have permeated this troubled and violence ridden neighborhood. I hope to have another report about this in a few months as the program partners with other agencies throughout the U.S.

This is such a unique way to approach a challenge. I understand why it is so difficult for these kids to excel with the barriers our country puts up for communities around the country. How could I find out more about bringing this to my area? Is this only in LA?

Instead of providing tutors to fill in these kid's educational gaps they're pushing fads like the metaverse, blockchain and web3 on them.

Personally, I feel that if we teach people skills of the future it can only benefit them. Schools are focused in many cases on things our students will never use, which can sometimes be a waste of valuable educational time. This looks like is truly skill based.
