Nikon NX Studio | In-depth Step-by-Step Editing Guide

- This tutorial is a follow-up to my previous video on Nikon’s NX Studio which I gave my first impressions views on this free editing software.
This video is an in-depth look at NX-Studio and the many editing features that it has, and in the Video Time-line below you can jump through the sections that you’d like to watch.
My overall thoughts on this software is that it’s very good, But!
* Is a bit slow to apply some of the editing process while you’re editing a photo.
* It doesn’t support DNG files that were converted from NEF files, which I hope Nikon fixes in a future firmware update.
Overall, I’d give this software a 7/10 and would recommend it for people who just like to go out and take photos and don’t want to pay for a subscription fee for Lightroom Classic.

Thanks, Charles. I am that typical "weekend photographer" you mentioned. I want my work to be better and I have come to realize that I'm taking decent shots but have zero experience with post-production. Last night, I discovered NX Studio and was very excited to find out that it was free! I don't like the idea of paying $120-$240 per year for something when I can do most of what I need for free. This was the perfect video to show that you can indeed do wonders with software. I wonder how many of us would have looked at the original RAW photo and said "That didn't turn out. Trash it!" You showed so much in less than half an hour! VERY helpful.
Thank you s much for your feedback, and this is why I did this tutorial on NX Studio, to show people that if you're just after touching up your raw files then this program is great.
Very clear narration sir and unbelievable details you've showed us how to bring in to the RAW photos utilizing the NX studio cool features. I am new to raw, professional photographs...now its time to edit all the RAW photos I've taken with my new Z8 in NX studio. Thanks once again for all your videos, which was really helpful...♥
My pleasure, glad it was helpful! 😉
Thank you Charles for a very informative and helpful tutorial. It has certainly helped me speed up and smooth out my photo editing. Excellent!

Thank you so much! I have been using NX for some time, but have never delved into anything beyond the basic controls - before watching your video, which really opened my eyes. I intend to watch every vid you offer, and consider me a loyal supporter of your channel!

Great .. Good tutorial within few minutes.. Hope to see more . Thank u Sir.
So nice of you to let me know, much appreciated
I have just discovered that I had NX studio. With your walkthrough editing guide, I now know how to start to use it. I have a D750 and will use NX studio before considering whether I need to use a paid-for program. You have made it very easy to understand which is a credit to your skill of explaining. Your video is very inspiring. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!, and thank you very much for your kind words, very much appreciated
Thank you for all your effort on this excellent lesson. After 50 years shooting with a mediocre camera, I am so happy to have a higher quality Nikon D500 to learn to use. Seattle, WA, USA
You're very welcome and thank you for commenting on this video, glad I was able to help you out.
Thank you Charles for this very useful video! Just what I needed, learnt a lot about NX Studio.
Glad it was helpful! 🙏
Great tutorial and super easy to understand for beginners like me!
Glad it was helpful!, and thanks for letting me know. Very much appreciated. Stay tuned for my next NX Tutorial that I will be publishing very soon, which is on Editing a sunset image and using Distortion Control in NX Studio to straighten an image taken with a Ultra-Wide Angle Lens.
Just downloaded NX Studio. This was a great video to get me started. Thanks for your time putting this together.
Glad it was helpful!🙏
This is the best tutorial I've ever seen. Thank you for your effort, sir! Much appreciated!
You're very welcome! and I'm glad that this tutorial was able to learn how to get the most out of Nikon NX Studio 🙏
Thanks for the reply , apart from that I was much impressed by your delivery and communication skills, so unlike many other photography You Tubers who gabble away at such a speed the recipient doesn't have time to assimilate the information imparted. You have inspired me to make use of this NX software .
Thank you so much for your comment, very much appreciated
Thank Charles for a very good insight into NX Studio, I found it very informative many thanks.
My pleasure, glad it was helpful! 🙏
Thank you for explaining how the program works. It is very helpful. Well done!!!!

It is so useful. Thanks for the great work!
Yes it is, and thanks for commenting.
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. Not just showed studio but effects on the controls. You are a gifted teacher. I always thought teach by example is the way to go. Thanks again. Bob
Glad it was helpful! and thank you for letting me know.
@@CharlesNPhotography I just switched to Nikon studio but could Never figure out where the 'black point' adjustment" was located until you showed me in the video
This is so helpful, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Your videos are a great help to a weekend photographer.
Great to hear! and glad that you like them and find them informative 🙏
Thank you so much for your time and effort explaining very clearly how to use NX software. I had ViewNX 2 for my Nikon D7000. After purchasing my Nikon D850 I had to install NX Studio. I am going to try your method today. Thank you so much. God Bless you. Greetings from Sri Lanka
Glad it was helpful! and you're very welcome
Charles! Excellent! Keep up the good work!
Much appreciated!, and thanks for commenting, much appreciated
Very good video. I started using NX Studio shortly after it came out but I had not explored it to the depth you presented. I like the program.
Glad it was helpful!, and thank you for your comments
Great video, well presented and explained. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! And thanks for commenting 😊
Thanks so much for this. I am new to photo editing but I've owned a Nikon DSLR for years.
You're very welcome Kim. I am planning on doing more tutorials on how to use NX Studio but with different types of images, like wildlife Nightscapes
Thank you for this video. Really useful!!!
Thank you so much for letting me know. 🙏
What a brilliant video. Just added a D780 and a 70-200 f2,3 Nikon lens to my kit. I used my D7500 and a new Sigma 150-600 for a safari this September. I also signed up for Lightroom Classic and while setting up my new D780, had a look and a short try of NX Studio and was impressed. Then I stumbled on this video. You're the first person that has really explained Levels and Curves. Loved it when you then said you didn't really need it!! Everything was well explained and I am probably now only going to shoot in RAW and dump Lightroom. Subscribed. See you on your website.
Thank you so much for your feedback, yes NX Studio is very good for a free editing program for Nikon users. If I wasn't doing photography full-time, I would stop using Lightroom and just use NX Studio.
Thanks Charles for your compelling introduction of Nikon NX Studio.
You're welcome Daniel, it's a good program to use
Last year I switched from Adobe to ON1, which is in my opinion, I very attractive alternative with everything I use for digital asset management and RAW processing. I will check Nikons software in the coming months.
@@DHAGMANN2 I like NX Studio, but I'm entrenched in LR so will stick to it.
Thanks for your great tutorial, just started using NX. You are 100% right can’t beated for a free software.
Couldn't agree more!
Wow thank you so much I will now have a play with this software.
You're welcome and thanks very much for commenting on this tutorial
Charles, I am very thankful for your explanation and step-by-step introduction the NXS product. It is really very, very helpful for me as an Lr user. I have installed NXS just some days ago and your tutorial now has a stick in user's hands. I am looking for smg new and fresh from Nikon and here we go. Your explanation was very understandable and easy to follow. I am not a great fan of Active D-L at all, but after your explanation I will turn towards AD-L feature more. A couple of years I am using D750 and monster D700 and sometimes I record on both slots, RAW and JEPG simultaneously. It's slow down a little bit recording process but very convenient for me. I will definitely follow to your's tutorials on NXS in a short or longer period. Great job and well done Charles!
Thank you so much for your detailed feedback on my tutorials on NX Studio, they are very much appreciated.
Thank you for the content, it was just what I needed.
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant, thanks for sharing Charles!
My pleasure! and glad you liked it
Great video man, very usefull for someone like me who just started to learn photography! Thanks
Your very welcome, and thanks for letting me know 🙏
Thanks Charles. You nailed it for a beginner. I extensively use NX studio or capture nxd as it used to be called, for my D850. Brings out colours so well. Actually I would recommend NX studio for all Nikon users. One may use it in combination with Aurora HDR to plug in the missing features of layers.
Yes, I agree, NX Studio is quite good, but it's not as feature packed as Lightroom Classic, but for the day-to-day photographer it's quite good. I'm uploading another NX Studio video tonight and this one is on editing a Milky Way image.
Thank you so much this step by step detailed tutorial. I’m an amateur photographer ans I’ve been struggling to figure out the software. This was a massive massive help
That's great that I was able to help you out. Thanks for the comment

Looks great, I've been using darktable for a while but this looks much simpler with all the tools I would need as a hobbyist
Yes, it has so many feature that it's surprising that a program like this is free.
Thank you, Charles, for explaining it so well. I am rather a month-end or six-monthly photographer, uses Nikon Z7 - so this free program suits me well.
You're welcome and thank you for letting me know
Thank you Charles. That was very very helpful.
Glad it was helpful! and thanks for letting me know 🙏
Really nice job. Thank you!
My pleasure, Glad you liked it!
You are genuine and direct, not selling anything here. All editing videos we watch on Adobe lightroom, photoshop and other was so convincing that I went spending money. Having recently installed and using the NX studio I cannot agree more with you, this is not only a very good software, it's the single best photo editing software for Nikon cameras, no other software can provide excellent result for Nikon camera as Nikon's own photo editor; Nikon knows the algorithm of their color science better than anyone else. I have now compared few of the side by side images done in this software and the other popular ones and the results from Nikon NX Studio is much cleaner and better than others, period.
Thank you very much for your feedback, very much appreciated. 🙏. I agree with you and when the day comes to stop being a full-time photographer, I plan on just using Nikon NX Studio.
Great video and it has helped me to overcome my fear of using the NX Studio which i had downloaded (but hadn’t explored). Have subscribed and look forward to more videos. Cheers
Glad I could help! and thanks for subscribing to my channel
Excellent! I just purchased a D750 and am shooting NEF. This is the perfect tutorial!
Thank you so much for your comment, very much appreciated 🙏
wow thanks so much! finally found a free program and these videos are helping so much i know nothing about pos-processing and this video is super helpful thanks a lot mister Charles!
Thank you so much for your feedback, very much appreciated 🙏
Thanks from me too Charles, a great in-depth look at NX which I've been (mis)using for some time! I submit photos to Alamy and I get rejections when I mess with 'sharpness'. Very useful 1/2 hour - cheers
Fantastic!, thanks for letting me know that this tutorial helped you out 🙏
Thank you Charles for making this video!
My pleasure! and I'm grateful that this video has help you learn how to use Nikon NX Studio 🙏
Very well explained nice work
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Charles, very informative Just what I need. I have subscribed and ready for more! Alan, South Africa.
Thank you very much for subscribing to my channel. 🙏
That was a very good introduction to NX Studio. I really appreciate the detailed explanation. And, I agree with some of the other commentators that you need to do a second video explaining the other features. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! And I have already done 3 other videos on using NX Studio
Muito obrigado Charles! Eu tinha ele no meu notebook e não usáva-o, mas depois de ver seu video eu resolvi utilizá-lo sem medo.
Thanks a lot Charles! I had it on my notebook and I didn't use it, but after watching your video I decided to use it without fear.
Thank you very much for letting me know that this tutorial help you use NX Studio to its full potential 🙏
Thank you for a great video this is very helpful
Thanks very much Scott, glad you found it useful
Love it! It would be great to have an NX Studio tutorial on a portrait photo. Thanks, Charles!
Thank you and I'm thinking about doing that, but need to find a model first, my wife's not keen on the idea of me posting photos of her in my tutorials.
Great video, thank you.

Very helpful, Charles. I just cancelled my Lightroom free trial period in time to give NX a chance. Thanks a lot from Bonn!
You're welcome, glad I was of help.
Excellent video. Simple explanation 👍
Thank you very much for your comment
You have a new subscriber ;) , also into AP as well. Just exploring NX Studio and your vid was very, very helpfull! Keep up the good work Charles.
Awesome, thank you! Nikon has just updated NX Studio, so I plan o look at the update in a few days time and if there's been major improvements I'll do a video talking about the updates.
Thank you! Very Helpful!
Glad to hear that! And thanks for letting me know that this tutorial helped you.🙏
Extremely useful video, i can now use it properly. Thanks for sharing it.
You're welcome Vimal, I plan on doing another NX Studio tutorial soon and that one will be on editing a Wildlife image.
@@CharlesNPhotography I am really grateful Charles, as I don't wish to pay monthly to Lightroom and you have shown me exactly what I was missing without Adobe. I subscribed to your channel immediately!
Iw ill be eagerly waiting and I have clicked the bell icon for that
@@vimalneha You're welcome. If I wasn't that serious about my Photography I would also be using NX Studio for all my editing.

Thank you Charle, it helps a lot.
Thank you very much for your comment, very much appreciated 😀
Thank you. I was looking for a free software to edit raw nikon files. Happy with my first attempt of editing.
Glad I could help! 🙏.
Thank you Charles for making this video! Really learned a lot 🙂. Much appreciated! As you say, I am a bit of hobbyist/weekend photographer and so far I have only been shooting jpegs with my Nikon camera. I wanted to start shooting in raw without having to pay for software to edit looks like Nikon took care of that 😀
Glad to have been of help to you.
thank you so much. that was helpful
Glad it helped!
It makes perfect sense Nikon is giving it free to Nikon users. If it read dng files, anyone with any other brand of camera could use if free. Thank you Nikon! I have always kept my original files and made dng copies.
Derrick, even though I convert my NEF files to DNG, they still are recognised as a Nikon RAW file. Also since this program can also read JPG's and TIF files, this idea doesn't stack up. Has I can edit TIF files that were saved from NEF files and DNG files.
Just started shooting in RAW with my Nikon 7200. this is an excellent video - thanks.
Glad to be of help to you
Nice video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Very good, thanks.
Glad you liked it!
Helpful review. Thanks.
Thank you so much, glad it was helpful for you.
Very good. Thank you.
My pleasure, and thanks for letting me know 🙏
Thank you Charles for this review. I am a weekend hobbyist and I am battling with Adobe making the green of my garden photos look all weird, no matter how much I adjusted, I am not happy with how Adobe was interpreting the green colours of my garden photos. Maybe it is me doing something wrong, but the point is I was not satisfied with the results of the colours. I watched your review, tried out NX Studio, and to my great pleasure, it has interpreted the greens to look correct/pleasing to me. I am far more pleased with the results from NX Studio, especially the final results of the colour interpretation. Thanks for taking the time to do this review, your effort made a change in my hobby!
You're very welcome, and thank you very much for letting me know how much you appreciated my efforts.
Great video. Thanks
Thank you for commenting, much appreciated
Great intro to NX Studio. I’ll be using NX Studio in the future, since I don’t like the subscription based licensing of Lightroom. Thank you Charles.
I I wasn't that involved/committed to photography I would be using NX Studio, and made in the future when I stop doing this full-time, I most likely will go to NX Studio
Very well presented tutorial - thank you Charles. Much appreciated! I've been using NX Studio as a new to RAW photographer - generally feeling successful, again thanks to your tutorials. One thing in NX Studio I was wondering if you would consider a more detailed tutorial on using the Color Control Point tool - I see the great value in the tool, but my use of it is awkward, and I'm sure there are things I'm doing wrong - can't seem to move it around smoothly among other things. Thanks again for the energy and effort you put into your tutorials.
Thank you for your feedback, I will look at doing a tutorial on the Color Control Point tool.
Very very informative Sir...
Thanks and welcome
Your video on Nikon NX Studio was very helpful. I am a amateur photographer but I like to improve my skills. I have a Nikon D3500 camera.
Glad it was helpful! and thanks for letting me know 🙏
Very Good Video, i use LR. But wanted a back up Editing Software to learn in case I wanted to drop Adobe. Thank You very much for your teaching skills.
You're welcome, I learnt how to use NX Studio for the same reason.
I really like Active D-Lighting. Also it's good to have same settings in camera and on editing software.
It really is!
Nikon Capture NX2 Preceded Lightroom and NX Studio, it was not free. It was wonderful and if you mastered it you could do anything with it, I never used anything else. I am delighted to see this is similar,. The great thing about Capture NX2 was the control points. You could literally recreate the photo like a great canvas only as small as a few pixels a a time. You never harm the NEF All edits you save as a version.
Thanks for sharing!
No arguments about this being a full featured editing program. Quite unexpected coming from NIKON, and for free!
I still need Lightroom as I always shoot raw with a small variety of different gear - action camera, drones
Yes It is a fairly good editing program for those who don't do to much editing to their photos. 😉
Thanks Charles . Unfortunately my OS is to old to download NX but will update later. I will find out Monday the delivery date of my 200-500mm lens. Hope it is soon as the spring birds are starting to show up. Tks. again fr Canada
You're welcome Bill, you'll fall in love with the 200-500mm
