  • This tutorial is a follow-up to my previous video on Nikon’s NX Studio which I gave my first impressions views on this free editing software.
    This video is an in-depth look at NX-Studio and the many editing features that it has, and in the Video Time-line below you can jump through the sections that you’d like to watch.
    My overall thoughts on this software is that it’s very good, But!
    * Is a bit slow to apply some of the editing process while you’re editing a photo.
    * It doesn’t support DNG files that were converted from NEF files, which I hope Nikon fixes in a future firmware update.
    Overall, I’d give this software a 7/10 and would recommend it for people who just like to go out and take photos and don’t want to pay for a subscription fee for Lightroom Classic.

    Thanks, Charles. I am that typical "weekend photographer" you mentioned. I want my work to be better and I have come to realize that I'm taking decent shots but have zero experience with post-production. Last night, I discovered NX Studio and was very excited to find out that it was free! I don't like the idea of paying $120-$240 per year for something when I can do most of what I need for free. This was the perfect video to show that you can indeed do wonders with software. I wonder how many of us would have looked at the original RAW photo and said "That didn't turn out. Trash it!" You showed so much in less than half an hour! VERY helpful.

    What a brilliant video. Just added a D780 and a 70-200 f2,3 Nikon lens to my kit. I used my D7500 and a new Sigma 150-600 for a safari this September. I also signed up for Lightroom Classic and while setting up my new D780, had a look and a short try of NX Studio and was impressed. Then I stumbled on this video. You're the first person that has really explained Levels and Curves. Loved it when you then said you didn't really need it!! Everything was well explained and I am probably now only going to shoot in RAW and dump Lightroom. Subscribed. See you on your website.

I have installed NXS just some days ago and your tutorial now has a stick in user's hands. I am looking for smg new and fresh from Nikon and here we go. Your explanation was very understandable and easy to follow. I am not a great fan of Active D-L at all, but after your explanation I will turn towards AD-L feature more. A couple of years I am using D750 and monster D700 and sometimes I record on both slots, RAW and JEPG simultaneously. It's slow down a little bit recording process but very convenient for me. You are genuine and direct, not selling anything here. All editing videos we watch on Adobe lightroom, photoshop and other was so convincing that I went spending money. Having recently installed and using the NX studio I cannot agree more with you, this is not only a very good software, it's the single best photo editing software for Nikon cameras, no other software can provide excellent result for Nikon camera as Nikon's own photo editor; Nikon knows the algorithm of their color science better than anyone else. I have now compared few of the side by side images done in this software and the other popular ones and the results from Nikon NX Studio is much cleaner and better than others, period.

      Awesome, thank you! Nikon has just updated NX Studio, so I plan o look at the update in a few days time and if there's been major improvements I'll do a video talking about the updates.

    Thank you Charles for making this video! Really learned a lot 🙂. Much appreciated! As you say, I am a bit of hobbyist/weekend photographer and so far I have only been shooting jpegs with my Nikon camera. I wanted to start shooting in raw without having to pay for software to edit looks like Nikon took care of that 😀

    It makes perfect sense Nikon is giving it free to Nikon users. If it read dng files, anyone with any other brand of camera could use if free. Thank you Nikon! I have always kept my original files and made dng copies.

    • @CharlesNPhotography
      @CharlesNPhotography  Před 3 lety

      Derrick, even though I convert my NEF files to DNG, they still are recognised as a Nikon RAW file. Also since this program can also read JPG's and TIF files, this idea doesn't stack up. Has I can edit TIF files that were saved from NEF files and DNG files.

    Thank you Charles for this review. I am a weekend hobbyist and I am battling with Adobe making the green of my garden photos look all weird, no matter how much I adjusted, I am not happy with how Adobe was interpreting the green colours of my garden photos. Maybe it is me doing something wrong, but the point is I was not satisfied with the results of the colours. I watched your review, tried out NX Studio, and to my great pleasure, it has interpreted the greens to look correct/pleasing to me. I am far more pleased with the results from NX Studio, especially the final results of the colour interpretation. Thanks for taking the time to do this review, your effort made a change in my hobby!

    Very well presented tutorial - thank you Charles. Much appreciated! I've been using NX Studio as a new to RAW photographer - generally feeling successful, again thanks to your tutorials. One thing in NX Studio I was wondering if you would consider a more detailed tutorial on using the Color Control Point tool - I see the great value in the tool, but my use of it is awkward, and I'm sure there are things I'm doing wrong - can't seem to move it around smoothly among other things. Thanks again for the energy and effort you put into your tutorials.

    Nikon Capture NX2 Preceded Lightroom and NX Studio, it was not free. It was wonderful and if you mastered it you could do anything with it, I never used anything else. I am delighted to see this is similar,. The great thing about Capture NX2 was the control points. You could literally recreate the photo like a great canvas only as small as a few pixels a a time. You never harm the NEF All edits you save as a version.

    No arguments about this being a full featured editing program. Quite unexpected coming from NIKON, and for free!
    I still need Lightroom as I always shoot raw with a small variety of different gear - action camera, drones
