This performance once again brings up the question: Is it possible to cover truly iconic singers?--Al Green, Ray Charles, Joni Mitchell, etc. They cannot be duplicated so should anyone even bother. But this leads to another question, should a song survive on its' own or only as its' original recorded performance? A cover gives an opportunity to hear the song with new ears and appreciate it with more understanding, if perhaps less passion than when it felt like new love. HUNTER is not Al Green, Ryan is not Teenie Hodges, and the Stories studio is not Hi Records, but this is a
fine, sweet, classy performance. The easy countryish lope of the guitar sets it's own very effective groove. I have found myself coming back to it repeatedly over the last two weeks as well has going back for a booster shot of Reverend Al. It's all good.

I'll preface this by saying that I may be biased in that I grew up listening to this song and to my ear this was a pedestrian attempt. Trying to cover a staple of soul, Al Green's "Tired of Being Alone", is a TALL order. Hunter has a beautiful voice but it takes more than that to capture the essence, feeling and soul of this song. To put it succinctly, this song isn't for her. I wish her the best and look forward to hearing her on future performances.
